Beste Van Eeden, je hebt vanmiddag zuiver gelijk gehad, 't was niet goed van mij, dat ik je mijn boek niet gaf. Maar ik vreesde harde woorden over dit boek, dat ik zoo zeer ver van je afstaande dacht. Wil je het mij vergeven? Giza heeft mijn exemplaar en Hans zal haar vragen het jou te zenden.
Ik dank je zoo voor je zachte en sterke woorden. Alles is zoo zeer moeilijk en nu heb je me veel goeds gedaan.
Het is gegaan zooals je gezeid hebt, Sam is niet goed voor mij geworden. Maar dat zal ik nu vast niet doen, tegen de rede in, omdat een ander mij zijn wil opleit. Sam heeft mij met Hans samen verduveldonderd, maar ik zal mijn kracht zien te herhebben en te behouden.
Het is een zeer ergerlijk boek maar dit is zooals je zei, voor gezonde lieden niet.
Ik wilde, dat je weer voor altijd mijn vriend wou zijn. Het is zoo ongerust om ons heen en je ziet niks dan nijd en barheid
Met de S.D.A.P. zal ik probeeren tot klaarheid te komen, maar als dit een partij moet zijn, die ketteren wil, dan wil ik het niet.
'k Hoop, dat je mooie dingen in het boek vinden zult.
Ik ben nu sterk besloten een nieuwe druk ervan te geven. Wil je d'r 'n inleiding voor maken, waarin je de dufburgerlijke fatsoentjesmenschjes 'n robbedoes toedient?

De brief van Aletrino aan De Haan, waarvan in de kort na de voorafgaande aan Van Eeden gerichte brief sprake is, is niet bewaard gebleven. Men heeft het gevoel dat men het raadsel van de verhouding tussen De Haan en Aletrino en van de verhouding tussen de werkelijkheid en de roman Pijpelijntjes zeer nabij komt, zonder dat men een oplossing ziet.
