In antwoord op uw schrijven van gisteren heb ik het genoegen u mede te deelen, dat ik uw boek ‘Pijpelijntjes’ reeds voor de ontvangst van dat schrijven geheel gelezen had met veel belangstelling. Van het begrip, dat ik het Nieuwe Gids begrip zal noemen, en dat twintig jaar lang ongeveer de Nederlandsche letterkundige kritiek heeft beheerscht, uit beschouwd, is er niet alleen geen algemeene aanmerking op uw boek te maken, maar behoort het zelfs tot het voortreffelijkste wat in de laatste jaren is verschenen. Voor mij zijt gij een zeldzaam en goed kunstenaar. Evenwel heeft in de latere jaren mijn eigen begrip van wat een letterkundig boek behoort te zijn zich eenigszins gewijzigd of aangevuld. Zoo vernam ik onlangs, dat mijn roman ‘de Kleine Republiek’ zich in de bibliotheek eener H.B.S.333. bevond en moest dit nadrukkelijk afkeuren. Langs die lijn doordenkend komt men er toe de publicatie van een boek ook als daad in de samenleving te beschouwen, en het dus in een publicatie minder goed te achten indien zij bevordert levenswijzen die men meent, dat niet bevorderd moeten worden. Wij zijn en blijven producten van ons laatste cultuur-historisch verleden en gevoelen en denken onwederstaanbaar als zoodanig. Daarom heeft, al is ook van uit een andere psychische beschouwings-wijze gezien deze neiging juist het edelste wat hij in zich heeft, een mensch zoo als er een in uw werk is afgebeeld, iets, waarom wij zijn omgang niet zouden wenschen, en daarom willen wij dergelijke neigingen bij de menschen niet bevorderd zien. De uitgave van een boek als het uwe nu, bevordert gevoelingen en gedragingen zoo als die, welke er met zooveel talent in zijn beschreven. Zoo als ik zeide geef ik u toe, dat dit mijn gevoelen niet geheel thuis behoort in de Nieuwe Gids-theoriën, maar het is juist, wanneer eene theorie zoo in hare uiterste consequentie wordt toegepast als door uwe schetsen geschiedt, dat men er het wankele of te ver gedreven deel van gewaar wordt. Aldus meen ik u mijn waardeering van uw werk te hebben duidelijk gemaakt en ben met collegialen groet, hoogachtend. -
Nadat hij de brief van Van Deyssel ontvangen had, schreef De Haan aan zijn oude vriend Van Eeden. Ook deze was van de wording van Pijpelijntjes kennelijk niet op de hoogte geweest. Op 10 februari 1904 had De Haan hem op Walden bezocht, maar hoewel er toen harde noten gekraakt moeten zijn (‘Gister kwam hier Jacob de Haan en lokte mij uit, zoodat ik hem geducht de waarheid zei’, aldus de dagboeknotitie van Van Eeden van 11 februari), Pijpelijntjes schijnt niet ter sprake te zijn gebracht. De Haan citeert uit Van Deyssels brief: niet de laatste keer dat hij Van Deyssels woorden zal gebruiken om, als we het zo mogen uitdrukken, zijn boek te rechtvaardigen. |
