Over dingen, die nu nog te ver van je leven afstaan, heb ik met de lui van ‘Het Volk’ hevige ruzie gehad. Daarom ben ik er niet meer aan. Het is voor de kinderen jammer, we waren zoo lekker aan elkaar gewend. Dag beste jongen, ik heb 't zeer druk met allerlei dingen, daarom moet dit kattenbelletje voldoende zijn. Toen, in zijn ‘benauwde nood’325., richtte De Haan zich tot Lodewijk van Deyssel. ‘Waarom Van Deijs[s]el juist? Wel omdat juist in dien tijd alom gegeurd werd met het goede oordeel van Van Deyssel over het litteraire werk van onzen overledenen Henri Hartog’326.. Het ingrijpend optreden van Aletrino vanuit zijn persoonlijke betrokkenheid en van Tak met zijn politieke zorgen zou kunnen doen vergeten dat er hier tenslotte een roman op het spel stond, een literair kunstwerk. Vanaf dit ogenblik zal De Haan juist op de artistieke kant van de zaak de aandacht gevestigd houden. Vandaar dus het beroep op Lodewijk van Deyssel, de grote Tachtiger, de man die in De Nieuwe Gids zo trots en uitdagend beweerd had dat kunst en zedelijkheid met elkaar niets hadden uit te staan. ‘Tot een kunstenaar, van zijn werk sprekende, te zeggen: foei, wat is dat onzedelijk! of: u mag niet onzedelijk zijn!, dat is net het zelfde als dat je tegen iemant op een zwemschoolgaanderij zoû zeggen: foei, hoe onbetamelijk, welke mijnheer loopt er nu met bloote borst en beenen!’. Dit had Van Deyssel naar aanleiding van een klein schandaal rondom zijn roman Een liefde geschreven in een nogal bekend geworden ‘Zedelijkheids-causerietje’ in De Nieuwe Gids in 1888. Legt men aan zo iemand de vraag voor of een schrijver iets ‘onzedelijks’ als onderwerp van zijn roman mag kiezen, dan lijkt die vraag louter retorisch. Er is van Van Deyssel de aanhef van een kritisch opstel over Pijpelijntjes bewaard gebleven327.: ‘een droevig geval in de Nederlandsche Letterkunde. Toen ik dit boek gelezen had en voortreffelijk bevonden, vernam ik, dat de uitgave gestaakt was en het boek vernietigd. Dit is geschied om redenen buiten de Kunst. In de schetsen van dit boek, vooral in de eerste, bemerken wij iets, dat wij bij wijze van spreken, een “mystisch waas” zouden noemen. Dit is het onaanvechtbaar bewijs dat het boek “kunst” is. Het is niet groot, niet sterk, niet schoon, maar het is echt en kunst. Het is echte kunst. Buitendien is het beter dan veel van het in de laatste jaren in onze Letterkunde uitbundig geprezene. In dit boek wordt voorgesteld een verschijnsel, dat wij, heden-daagsche wereld-bewoners’ - ‘hier is het blad vol en breekt de tekst bijgevolg af’ aldus Harry Prick. Van Deyssel wist, toen hij dit schreef, van het droevig lot van Pijpelijntjes. Het verzoek van Van Cleef om het boek niet te bespreken, heeft mogelijk een publicatie van het (volledige) opstel tegengehouden. ‘Het recensie-exemplaar werd niet geretourneerd’ tekent Prick aan328.. De Haan was van dit alles niet op de hoogte. Opvallend in zijn brief aan Van Deyssel is het Catulluscitaat, dat niet veel later als motto in de tweede uitgave van Pijpelijntjes zal verschijnen. De dichter, aldus Catullus, kan heel goed een onberispelijk leven leiden, ook al is zijn werk onzedelijk. Deze opvatting van de verhouding tussen de kunstenaar en zijn werk, anders gezegd: deze literatuuropvatting van De Haan sloot soepel aan bij het ‘l'art pour l'art’-principe van de Tachtigers, maar viel daarmee niet samen. Voor de Tachtigers speelde het persoonlijk leven van de kunstenaar geen rol, als hij maar mooie kunstwerken maakte. Men denke aan de manier waarop de Hollandse letterkundige elite in Vincent Haman een beroemde en aanstootgevende Franse dichter, op bezoek in Holland, de hand komt drukken (hoofdstuk 15: ‘Wat zagen ze nou allemaal helder in, dat 'n viezik heel goed mooie verzen kan maken, dat 'n artist dat aan z'n laars lapt of iemand 'n viezik is’). Voor De Haan gold hetzelfde principe: het gaat om de schoonheid van het kunstwerk en niet om het maatschappelijk gedrag van de kunstenaar. Maar tegelijk gold het omgekeerde: het kunstwerk mocht onzedelijk en aanstootgevend zijn zoals Pijpelijntjes, maar de auteur niet. De Haan werkt aan een nieuw plan. Van een nieuwe uitgave van Pijpelijntjes vertelt hij echter aan Van Deyssel nog niets. |
