St. Willibrordstraat.Zeer geachte heer Tak, m'n plan was gisteren even bij u te komen om de dreigende zaak te bepraten, maar u was niet thuis. En ik mag niet veel uitgaan, omdat ik iets leelijks aan m'n longen heb. Over de manier waarop u de zaak behandeld hebt willen we maar zwijgen, wat geeft 't als sociaaldemocraten elkaar bittere woorden toedouwen, maar me dunkt na 14 maanden zóóveel voor ‘Het Volk’ gedaan te hebben was dit grievende afscheid niet noodig geweest. Misschien is een afscheid geheel niet noodig. Geachte heer Tak, ik heb zelf begrepen, dat dit boek in dien vorm van mij, hoe goedbedoeld ook, de S.D.A.P. schade zou kunnen doen. Dit begrip is naar uw meening misschien wat te laat gekomen. Daar kom ik als 't vacantie is nog eens over praten en dan zal alles voor u wel tot kalmer klaarheid en vriendelijker waarheid komen. In allen gevalle, omdat ik dat nadeel voor de S.D.A.P. vreesde, heb ik de geheele oplaag van den uitgever gekocht Dat heeft mij f 550 gekost318., voorwaar geen kleinigheid. Sine causa non effectum319., maar als ‘causa’ weggenomen wordt, behoeft daar 't ‘effectum’ te blijven? Is 't nu niet 't beste dat ik de kinderkrant maar rustigjes houd? Ras kan u gezegd hebben, dat ik al van plan was het neer te leggen, omdat mijn borst zoo'n pijn deed. Maar dat kunnen we ook later zien. Ik geloof, dat 't anders met de kinderkrant gauw uit zal zijn. En dat 't in allen gevalle de krant veel meer kosten zal. Vliegen moge 't mij vergeven, maar gisterenavend320. was 't snert. Mocht u vinden, dat ik echter de prettige vrindschap van de redactie (die natuurlijk veel zuiverder zijn, dan ik ooit worden kan.) verspeeld heb, dan, enfin, u weet er alles van. Zeker heb ik moeilijke dagen gehad. Maar 't zal wel schikken en geschikt worden. Als u een opvolger voor me hebben wilt, zal ik de dingen, die ik nog heb voor de kinderkrant aan uw bureau laten afdragen. Met vriendelijke hoogachting uw dienstw: de Haan Deze brief kreeg ik heden321.. Alle verandering zal ook geen verbetering zijn.
Door het bliksemsnelle ingrijpen van Aletrino was Pijpelijntjes zo goed als nergens te verkrijgen geweest, ook niet voor een boekenliefhebber als Pieter Endt, de latere directeur van de Wereldbibliotheek, die, door geruchten verontrust, in De Ware Jacob onder de naam Peer Waarnemer322. op 14 juni 1904 om inlichtingen vroeg (zo werd het in het blad voorgesteld) en van de redactie ten antwoord kreeg: ‘Om Uwe nieuwsgierigheid te bevredigen, wil ik U mededeelen, dat de quintessens van “wat er in dat boek staat” is: dat Jacob de Haan eigenlijk Jacoba de Hen is’. Een ‘versje’ van Endt zal in een volgend nummer geplaatst worden. Het staat in de aflevering van 2 juli 1904. En daarin vinden we Endts vraag, zoals hij in werkelijkheid gesteld is, terug. Pijpelijntjes
Reeds lang had in de krant gestaan:
‘Het nieuwe boek van Joop de Haan
Zal binnenkort in 't licht verschijnen’.
Geen boek was 't voor z'n ‘lieve kleinen’,
Want er stond ‘Pijpelijntjes’ op.
(De prijs was: ingenaaid drie pop).
Die Joop de Haan, die Joop de Haan,
Wat er toch in dat boek mag staan!
Zoodra dat boekie was verschenen,
Ging 'k naar een boekverkooper henen.
Eerst in ‘de Kalv’, toen op 't Rokin,
'k Liep zelfs d'Oudmanhuispoort eens in.
Maar wáár ik speurde, hoe ik zocht,
Steeds was het antwoord: ‘Uitverkocht!’
Die Joop de Haan, die Joop de Haan,
Wat er toch in dat boek mag staan!
Ik hoorde nog dienzelfden dag:
Jacob de Haan heeft zijn ontslag
Aan 't ‘Volk’ als kind'renredacteur.
Of P.L. Tak hem wees de deur
Of dat-ie 't uit z'n eigen nam
Is niet bekend in Amsterdam.
Die Joop de Haan, die Joop de Haan,
Wat er toch in dat boek mag staan!
En 't Zondagsblad van 't ‘Volk’ zee:
‘De heer de Haan doet niet meer mee’.
Ik dacht: ze noemen hem ‘meneer’
Nu is hij geen ‘Genosse’ meer,
Geen ‘citoyen’, ‘partijgenoot’
Hij is voor ‘de beweging’ dood!
Die Joop de Haan, die Joop de Haan,
Wat er toch in dat boek mag staan!
En nu heb ik geen rust noch duur,
Dat boek maakt heel mijn leven zuur.
Eén exemplaar slechts van dat werk...!
Stop dan gerust mij onder 'n zerk,
Waarop mijn grafschrift is te lezen;
Die laatste woorden zullen wezen:
‘Die Joop de Haan, die Joop de Haan,
Dat heeft-ie met zijn boek gedaan!’
Een brief van De Haan aan Pieter Endt vertelt van een bezoek van Endt aan de Willibrordusstraat. Endt trof daar een neef van De Haan aan, misschien Izak de Haan323., zoon van Jacob Israëls oom Jacob, een jaar jonger dan de schrijver van Pijpelijntjes. In de brief is sprake van sympathie van de kant van Endt. Men kan daaruit wel afleiden dat de sneer in De Ware Jacob van 14 juni niet zijn werk was. Misschien ging hij De Haan persoonlijk opzoeken om een eventuele verkeerde indruk weg te nemen. Interessant in de brief is de aankondiging van een tweede druk van Pijpelijntjes. |
