Zooeven lees ik dat ‘de heer’ Jb. de Haan (is u geen partijgenoot meer?) niet meer zal medewerken aan Het Zondagsblad van Het Volk. Hoewel ik zelf geen kinderen heb, ben ik toch gerechtigd en op grond van eigen oordeel en op grond van wat ik in mijn omgeving hoorde, u mijn waardeering uit te spreken voor wat u met zoo beperkte middelen van de zoo ondankbare rubriek ‘voor kinderen’ hebt gemaakt. De Haans commentaar in de Open brief aan P.L. Tak van 1905: ‘Waarde Tak, er woont een waarlijk menschelijker partijgenoot dan gij zijt in Zaandam’. Op de vraag waarom Tak zo'n onverkwikkelijk briefje aan De Haan stuurde en in de krant een partijgenoot als socialist moreel royeerde, is nooit een afdoend antwoord gevonden. Tak joeg er De Haan mee in het harnas, haalde zich een polemiek op de hals die het lezerspubliek van Het Volk maandenlang in opwinding zou houden en werkte zelf het ontstaan van die praatjes in de hand waarvoor hij later zei zo bang te zijn geweest. Ondanks de biografie van G.W.B. Borrie weten we weinig van het privébestaan van Pieter Lodewijk Tak. Zijn carrière in de SDAP begon laat, maar verliep des te briljanter. Bij de partij sloot hij zich eerst in 1899 aan. Vier jaar later was hij lid van het Partijbestuur, in de tijd van de Pijpelijntjes-affaire zelfs voorzitter. In oktober 1903 was hij Troelstra opgevolgd als hoofdredacteur van Het Volk. In juni 1904 werd hij voor de SDAP in de Gemeenteraad van Amsterdam en in de Staten van Noord-Holland gekozen, een jaar later in de Tweede Kamer. ‘De redactie van Het Volk was voor Tak ongetwijfeld de grootste belasting’ schrijft Borrie303.. Toch was er nogal wat kritiek op Taks taakvervulling. Hij had, vond menigeen, niet de vereiste opzwepende toon zoals zijn voorganger gehad had. Gerard Ras, als woordvoerder van afdeling Amsterdam IX van de SDAP, had op het partijcongres van april 1904 in Dordrecht zelfs een motie ingediend: ‘Het congres [...] draagt de redaktie op, het agitatorisch karakter van Het Volk meer op den voorgrond te stellen’. (De motie werd ingetrokken.) De dagelijkse leiding van de krant en het schrijven van de hoofdartikelen liet Tak allengs aan anderen (Vliegen, Ankersmit) over. Op de redactie verscheen hij nog maar zelden. In april 1905 overrompelde hij de oppositie door af te treden en werd, zoals hij waarschijnlijk voorzien had, op het SDAP-congres in dezelfde maand bij acclamatie herbenoemd. We krijgen een beeld van Tak als van een ambitieus en handig, bedaard wikkend politicus304., wiens paniekreactie op Pijpelijntjes niet helemaal verklaarbaar lijkt. In zijn persoonlijk optreden schijnt Tak innemend geweest te zijn. ‘Het ging hem zoo goed af, zonder eenige aanstellerij wat vaderlijk te doen, zoodat de jongeren onder zijn vele vrienden en vriendinnen haast van zelf geneigd waren hem als “oom Piet” te betitelen’, aldus de bekende vrijzinnig-democraat en Amsterdams hoogleraar M.W.F. Treub; met die ‘glunder-opmerkzamen trek om den fijnen mond’ of ‘met dat satirieke glansje in de kleingeknepen oogen’ (Jan Veth), met ‘zijn vermogen om met jonge kunstenaars en schrijvers om te gaan, hen tot zich te trekken en te leiden’305. en ook met dat gezag dat hij als redacteur van De Kroniek en ex-redacteur van De Nieuwe Gids tegenover de jonge literator kon laten gelden, had deze man toch zonder moeite in een vriendelijk en ‘vaderlijk’ gesprek invloed of zelfs druk op De Haan kunnen uitoefenen, bijvoorbeeld om zijn boek uit de circulatie te nemen of om zelf zijn ontslag aan te bieden. In een persoonlijk gesprek sprak Tak over ‘zedelijkheid in en uit litteratuur’ ook op een manier die ‘geheel strijdig’ was met zijn mening in de krant306.. Jan Rogier307. doet een suggestie in de richting van een psychologische verklaring: de ‘levenslange vrijgezel’ Tak had ‘iets tegenstrevigs van temperament en lichamelijkheid’ te bedwingen. Misschien was hij alleen maar bang voor zijn carrière, bang voor met name de antirevolutionaire geweldenaar Abraham Kuyper, van wie ook Tak natuurlijk wist hoe graag hij om zich heen sloeg met de beschuldiging dat men propaganda voor Sodom maakte. Een schandaal rondom De Haan juist in de week van de verkiezingen had Tak en de SDAP stemmen kunnen kosten: partijbelang en Taks belang vereisten - zo heeft Tak geredeneerd - dat hij rücksichtslos ingreep. ‘Ik ben blij, dat niet de zonden van Sodom en Gomorra met Het Volk in verband zijn gebracht’, aldus verklaarde Tak later308.. ‘Onze vijanden zijn niets vies er in allerlei krantjes partij van te trekken’. Een partijgenoot uit Zutphen schreef aan Het Volk: De Haans ontslag zou ‘beter op een kalmen wijze gegeven zijn, en van Tak was die grootere bezadigdheid zeker te verwachten geweest. T[ak] moet de menschen slecht gekend hebben om het natuurlijk gevolg van de behandeling zóó (de plotselingheid, de absoluut onnoodige vernietiging van de loopende kopie, de vorm van het berichtje) niet te voorzien: hoe er n.l. toen de inhoud van Pijpelijntjes door gerucht bekend was, werd verteld, dat de dingen die Tak mogelijk achtte en wilde voorkomen gebeurd waren. Zoo is de redactie van Het Volk zelf oorzaak geweest van het afschuwelijk geklets onder partijgenooten en anderen, dat voor de H[aan] onverdiend, allerellendigst moet zijn geweest en bovendien giftig koorn op de molen van onze tegenstanders (van het meel kunnen we nog pleizier hebben)’. Het stuk werd door Het Volk geweigerd. De Haan nam het als ‘het stuk uit Zutfen’ in zijn Open brief aan P.L. Tak op309.. De Haans vriend Gerard Ras, student Duits aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, in 1907 getuige bij De Haans huwelijk, de man die juist in april op het SDAP-congres een motie tegen hem had ingediend, had een gesprek met Tak. Op 10 juni schreef Tak een tweede briefje aan De Haan. |
