Het zal u duidelijk zijn, dat na het verschijnen van dit boek, dat voor mij en zeker vele anderen een zeer ongewenschte verrassing was, uwe medewerking aan het Zondagsblad van Het Volk moet eindigen. Wij wachten dus geen copy meer van u. Met beleefden groet P.L. Tak.
Dezelfde avond las De Haan zijn ontslag in de krant (10 juni 1904): ‘Wij deelen mede, dat de heer Jacob de Haan niet meer aan ons Zondagsblad zal meewerken’. Ook de buitenwacht reageerde op de toon die hier werd aangeslagen: ‘een toon, die u als persoon vrij-staat’ voegde De Haan later aan Tak toe301., ‘maar die als hoofdredacteur van Het Volk de uwe tegen een partijgenoot niemaals mocht zijn’. Het katholieke dagblad Het Centrum schreef op 11 juni 1904: ‘Wanneer er stond, Jacob de Haan zonder meer, zou men aannemen, dat het afscheid in “païs en vreê” had plaats gehad. Nu er echter staat: “de heer Jacob de Haan”, krijgt de zaak een bedenkelijk aanzien!’. Van mr M. Mendels, bezoldigd propagandist van de SDAP in Zaandam (hij was tot 1902 redacteur buitenland van Het Volk geweest en zou in 1905 lid van het Partijbestuur worden), ontving De Haan een betuiging van sympathie. |
