Beleefdelijk heb ik de eer, u te verzoeken dit schrijven in welwillende overweging te willen nemen. Sinds een jaar is aan 't dagblad ‘Het Volk’ een apart weekblaadje voor de kinderen verbonden, dat geheel afgescheiden van de krant door mij geredigeerd en verzorgd wordt. Doel is, den kinderen, die geen apart kostend blaadje als ‘Ons Blaadje’, ‘Weekblad voor de Jeugd’ enz. kunnen betalen, toch eenigermate een vergoeding daarvoor te verschaffen. Dit heb ik nu een jaar gedaan. Gedurende dat jaar ben ik met enkele kinderen dan eens naar buiten geweest, om voor ons blaadje foto's te maken en 't een en ander te bezien. Verschillende plaatsen van dichtbij en verder hebben we nu al bezocht. Maar slechts weinig kinderen konden uitteraard zoo'n uitstapje meemaken. De kosten zijn steeds tamelijk groot. Nu heb ik een plan gemaakt om een grooter aantal kinderen met weinig kosten, door een bezoek aan uw diergaarde, een leerzamen en tegelijk aangenamen dag te schenken. Zoudt u erin willen toestemmen de kinderen, die mijn kinderblaadje lezen toe te laten op dezelfde voorwaarden als de leerlingen der 1ste en 2de klas O.L.S.273. en daarmee gelijkgestelde bijzondere scholen? Ik ontveins me niet, dat uw college door 't inwilligen van dit verzoek, voor moeilijke consequenties kan komen te staan. Maar ik neem de vrijheid u op enkele punten te wijzen. De kinderen vormen geen vereeniging, maar meer een club als ‘Ons Huis’274. eigenlijk nog losser. 't Verzoek gaat dus niet van een vereeniging uit, maar van den redacteur van een kinderweekblad voor zijn lezertjes. Vrees, dat u dus eene vereeniging boven eene andere zult bevoordeelen is er dus niet. De grens van kinderleeftijd is ook een bezwaar, maar we zouden dan kunnen bepalen, dat alleen schoolkinderen meemogen. En desnoods alleen van de eerste en tweede klas scholen. Op die manier kunnen ook kinderen, die geen school bezoeken, waar 't hoofd voor aanschouwelijkheid is, nu op een prettige manier veel leeren. Toch weet ik zelf al te goed, dat er groote bezwaren zijn, maar uw college kennend in wat 't al voor de minder gegoede klassen deed, hoop ik, dat u mijn verzoek op de een of andere wijze, zooals u 't best vindt, zult willen inwilligen. Van de kant van Artis werd welwillend gereageerd. Op De Haans brief vinden we een krabbel: ‘toegestaan f 0.10 p kind / mits behoorlijk geleid’. Er moest evenwel nog het een en ander geregeld worden. De Haan schreef dus een tweede briefje. En uit dit tweede briefje valt op te maken dat De Haan aan een school in Bussum werkzaam is, terwijl wij hem nog bij Van Dalfsen op de Marnixkade waanden. Op 8 mei 1904 vertrouwde hij iets dergelijks ook aan de kinderen toe: ‘Zie je, ik woon wel in Amsterdam, maar m'n werk is buiten en daar ga ik elken morgen heen en 's avonds terug weer’. Het raadsel wordt opgelost door een passage in een brief aan Van Eeden275.. De Haan dringt daar aan op een afspraak, op een woensdagmiddag, en vraagt om een briefje: ‘wil je het vooraf schrijven (b.v. aan 't Instituut “Gooiland”) want anders ga ik naar Amsterdam terug’. De Haan werkte dus aan het Instituut Gooiland, een kostschool in Bussum, waar jongens een opleiding voor de marine kregen276.. De brief werd door Artis gedateerd op 14 april 1904. Ingesloten was ook De Haans visitekaartje. Daarop staat door iemand gekrabbeld: ‘heeft toegang met schoolkinderen à f 0.10 p. kind / geleiders onderwijzers vrij’. |
