Giza is telkens ziek en ik heb Van Eedentje in 'n heele poos niet gezien, maar Sam wel. Hij is erg verdrietig tegenwoordig en ik kan hem niet helpen, want ik ben zelf ook verdrietig. Als 't zomer is kom ik weer in Noordwijk. Maar ik wilde zoo graag dat groote vers van mij terug hebben, dat u nog hebt259.. Wilt u het doen? Ik vind er een ding slecht in en dat moet er uit. Hoeveel dingen vindt u er slecht in. Nu hoop ik dat u 't terugstuurt. Ik vind 't mal, dat Van Deyssel in De Gids schrijft, maar Van Hall vindt 't prettig. Hij is altijd lief voor mij, maar hij kan me nu niet helpen. Gaat het knap met Liesbeth? Ik hoop het. Borel is op Riouw en mijn zuster is ook naar Indie. Die gaat naar Médan. In het Zondagsblad, buiten de kinderrubriek om, zette De Haan de publicatie voort van ‘schetsjes’, werk dat weinig aandacht zou verdienen, ware het niet dat men in sommige schetsjes iets van het latere, grote werk tegenkomt. Het verhaaltje ‘Horloge’ (van 31 januari 1904) gewaagt van drie vrienden: ‘Kees, die onderwijzer was, Arnold de student die altijd Sam genoemd werd en dan ik-zelf genaamd Johan, onderwijzer en student alle twee’; in Johan herkent men niet zozeer de figuur van Joop uit Pijpelijntjes (die immers geen onderwijzer was) als wel de persoon van de schrijver (in die tijd moet De Haan zich zijn visitekaartje hebben aangeschaft, waarop we lezen: ‘JACOB DE HAAN / onderwijzer / stud. i.d. rechten’), maar bij de figuur van Arnold legt men al heel gemakkelijk een link met Sam, de tweede hoofdrolspeler uit Pijpelijntjes: ‘Sam heet eigenlijk Arnold, maar we noemen 'm altijd Sam’260.. De intrige van ‘Horloge’ vindt men in Pijpelijntjes in het tweede hoofdstuk terug. Het gaat om een soort wisseltruc bij twee pandjeshuizen: door een horloge bij het ene pandjeshuis te lossen en het aan een ander duurder aan te bieden, hoopt men er financieel wat beter op te worden. In beide gevallen mislukt de opzet hopeloos, in beide gevallen maakt men een treurige voettocht door neerplenzende regen met geen ander gevolg dan dat men er geld bij inschiet. Maar daarmee houdt de overeenkomst op. In Pijpelijntjes is de scène opgenomen in een dramatische schildering van de verhouding tussen de twee hoofdfiguren Sam en Joop; de derde man - ‘Kees, die onderwijzer was’ - ontbreekt. De tocht door de regen is ook geen onaangename bijkomstigheid zoals in de schets in Het Volk (‘Met z'n drieën sjokken we voort, recht-toe, recht-an, dwars door de modderplassen heen’), maar een helse onderneming waarbij de emotionele band tussen Sam en Joop beproefd wordt (‘Mijn koudgeregende hand nam hij beet en hield hem vast, warm in de zijne’, en even later: ‘Kom maar dicht bij me loopen, dat is veel prettiger hè,... wil ik vannacht bij je slapen?’). Het bezoek aan het pandjeshuis in de Gerard Doustraat ontbreekt in Pijpelijntjes nagenoeg, maar wordt in de schets in Het Volk met een vol socialistisch accent op armoe en ellende geschilderd. En dan de pointe in de schets, zeer verrassend: plotseling laat Sam zich van een royale kant zien en trakteert. ‘Laten we dan maar bij Duval gaan eten, ik fuif’, zegt hij, ‘we gaan met de tram’. (Duval was een eethuis in de Gravenstraat, zijstraat van de Nieuwendijk bij de Dam.) Volgt een plezierig, onpijpelijntjesachtig eind: ‘En even later staan we op de tram, opgewekt door 't idee van 't goed maal van twee kwartjes elk bij Duval. De regen heeft opgehouden, eventjes droppelt 't af en toe nog’. De afstand tussen het schetsje ‘Boeven’, van 28 februari, en de roman (het gaat in dit geval om het twaalfde hoofdstuk, ‘Boevendag’) is veel groter. In het schetsje in Het Volk gaan enkele verwanten twee gedetineerden in een Amsterdamse gevangenis bezoeken en de ‘ik’, die ‘de heele zaak had meegemaakt’, gaat mee. In Pijpelijntjes gaan Sam en Joop samen mee en wel naar Haarlem; wat er precies achter die ‘zaak’ steekt, ervaren ze pas veel later, in het zeventiende hoofdstuk, ‘Celboef’ geheten: het is één van de doorgecomponeerde motieven in de roman. In de schets is van een tocht naar Haarlem geen sprake. De pointe is daar juist dat de twee gedetineerden niet meer ter plaatse aangetroffen worden: de een is naar Haarlem, de ander naar Leeuwarden afgevoerd. Het slot van het hoofdstuk ‘Boevendag’ wordt - zoals eigenlijk steeds in Pijpelijntjes - beheerst door de figuur van Sam: hij verlaat in Haarlem huilend de trein en verzint een list om aan die gevangenis te ontsnappen. Het thema van de schets ‘Verhuizen’, van 10 april 1904, wordt in Pijpelijntjes over drie hoofdstukken verdeeld behandeld en veel gedetailleerder uitgewerkt. Het gaat om twee studenten, die een nieuw kosthuis zoeken in de Pijp. Ze vinden iets, betalen ‘statiegeld’ vooruit en komen dan met hun verhuiskarretje voor een gesloten deur: de kostjuffrouw is er, met het statiegeld, vandoor. In Pijpelijntjes wordt dit thema bovendien verdubbeld: nadat de studenten door de nieuwe kostjuffrouw bij de neus genomen zijn, keren ze terug naar hun oude adres en blijken ook daar te zijn bedrogen. De vraag rijst: zijn deze schetsen bewerkingen van materiaal uit de roman, voor de krant geschikt gemaakt bijvoorbeeld om wat geld te verdienen? Zijn het afgeronde voorstudies? Hoe dan ook, iets ‘pijpelijntjesachtigs’, iets onfatsoenlijks hebben ze niet. Als scheppend kunstenaar droeg De Haan geen onvertogen woord aan Het Volk bij. Er zijn nog meer, nog andere relaties tussen De Haans schetsjes in Het Volk en zijn latere, grote werk. Tussen het verhaal ‘Advocaten-streek’, gepubliceerd in het Zondagsblad van 10 januari 1904, en de nerveuze vertelling ‘Over een blauwe en een roode diamant’, verschenen in Groot Nederland in 1908261., ligt een verschil van jaren en een verschil van stijl en literatuuropvatting waaraan men de ontwikkeling van De Haans schrijverschap in de tussenliggende jaren op indrukwekkende wijze kan aflezen. Toch is de kern van beide verhalen dezelfde: een staaltje van bedrog waarbij een advocaat zich op een louche manier verrijkt. Ook wordt die ‘streek’ in beide verhalen verteld door de advocaat zelf, die dan het woord van een ‘ik-verteller’ overneemt. Maar in dit geval kan men, de nerveuze vertelling met het schetsje in Het Volk vergelijkend, werkelijk spreken van een oud verhaal in een nieuwe zetting, een zetting waarbij ook twee diamanten opduiken waarvan De Haan in Het Volk niet durfde dromen. De anekdote van de ‘advocaten-streek’ werd ook gemonteerd in een veel groter geheel: de raadselachtige en fatale relatie tussen de advocaat en de ‘fijne polderjongen’ Heleen. Het schetsje in Het Volk bleef een anekdote zonder karaktertekening, gemoedelijk en generaliserend ingeleid met een praatje over zo'n reünie van oud-studenten waar ‘je’ wat onwennig bij elkaar zit, en culminerend in het onopgesmukte verhaal van de advocaat. Het schetsje eindigt met een veroordeling van die ‘advocaten-streek’ door de advocaat zelf, terwijl tegelijk in wezen de maatschappij voor dit roofridderschap aansprakelijk gesteld wordt: ‘Maar wat wil je? We zitten er eenmaal voor...’. Vergelijkbaar is de verhouding tussen het op 7 mei 1905 in het Zondagsblad verschenen schetsje ‘Brieven’ en het zwerversschetsje ‘Brieven’ in De Amsterdammer van 6 mei 1906. In het Zondagsbladschetsje krijgt een moeder een telegram uit Indië, dat haar zoon op Riouw ‘bij 'n amokpartij’ vermoord is. Niettemin blijven nog weken lang zijn vrolijke brieven komen. In het zwerversschetsje wordt het verhaal als verhaal verteld door de broer van het meisje dat een maand voor haar trouwdag een soortgelijk telegram uit Indië krijgt, dat haar aanstaande echtgenoot ‘bij 'n vechtpartij van olie-werklui was overhoopgestoken’. Daarna lopen dan nog wekenlang brieven van hem binnen, met ‘elleke mail’. Het meisje komt in Meerenberg terecht. Het aardige, voor wie de achtergrond kent, is dat volgens de verteller dit verhaal ‘van 'n objectief-sterke aandoening is... weet je waarom ook? Omdat ik nooit behoefte voel om d'r iets bij te maken. 't Is alles precies zoo gebeurd... geen stom woord meer of minder. En je weet wel andere dingen, die moest ik altijd opsieren, d'r wat bij maken. Anders waren ze me de moeite van 't vertellen niet waard’. Het lijkt een aspect van De Haans talent: hij kon ouder werk opnieuw onder handen nemen. Ook bij zijn verzen merkten wij dat al op. Keren wij terug tot de polemiek die duizendpoot De Haan met J.C. Ceton, de redacteur van De Volksonderwijzer, voerde over politiek en kinderlectuur; motto: ‘Graaf Leo is dom’. De Haan wees op 28 januari 1904 elke vorm van censuur van de hand. Hij wist zich ook gesteund door de ouders van zijn lezertjes, zei hij. Uit brieven bleek hem dikwijls dat die ‘de kinderrubriek nogal goed vonden. 't Is waar’, vervolgde hij ironisch, ‘dat waren geen theoretische opvoeders, maar een oudersoordeel is me dunkt ook wat waard’. Dit liet Ceton niet over zijn kant gaan. In De Volksonderwijzer van 13 februari 1904 kreeg De Haan dus nog eens de pen op de neus gezet: ‘Hanepen’ heet het stuk. Het drijft de spot met de onnozelheid van De Haan die in anti-militarisme blijkbaar geen politiek vraagstuk ziet, het beklaagt de kinderen die De Haans ‘dogma's’ moeten slikken, het loochent iedere bedoeling om censuur uit te oefenen, hoewel toch de redactie van Het Volk wel iets over De Haans kopij te zeggen heeft: ‘Anders kan ze er toch zeker niet verantwoordelijk voor zijn, wel?’. Ceton spreekt er dan ook zijn verbazing over uit dat de redactie van Het Volk het stuk van De Haan zonder commentaar heeft laten passeren. Toch krijgt men niet de indruk dat Tak, de hoofdredacteur van Het Volk, inderdaad achter De Haan stond. Wel deed dat de redacteur van het Zondagsblad, W.H. Vliegen. Hij schreef De Haan na het laatste stukje van Ceton. |
