Ik kom een logeetje van Gizella brengen. Maar eerst op de middag, omdat ik eerst les heb. Gegroet van Jacob de Haan Zal ik even komen? B.v. om twee uur. Vorige jaar regende het. Weet u nog?
Kort vóór 20 juni 1903 zendt De Haan een overdrukje van het ‘Spel van verwoest Jeruzalem’, in Nederland in twee gedeelten verschenen, aan Albert Verwey en vraagt om een oordeel. Tegelijk geeft hij in zijn brief een indruk van zijn activiteit als redacteur van de kinderrubriek. Hij heeft kaarten laten maken met vijftig vakjes. Elk doorgeprikt vakje, aldus de uitleg in de kinderrubriek op 31 mei, betekende één cent voor de uitgeslotenen en andere slachtoffers van de spoorwegstaking. Het geld moest opgestuurd worden per postwissel of op De Haans adres gebracht. Een volle prikkaart gaf kans op een prijs: twee Hongaarse poppen; zij waren De Haan beloofd door ‘een Hongaarsche vrouw’, zo schreef hij op 17 mei in de krant, en op 31 mei deelt hij mee: ‘Woensdagmiddag kreeg ik in eens een briefkaart van Giza Ritschl, dat ze weer in Amsterdam was. En dat ik de poppen mocht komen halen’. (Zij werden tenslotte gewonnen door Jopie en Mientje Borel te Scheveningen, aldus lezen we in Het Volk van 5 september 1903.) Ook in zijn raadselrubriek werkt De Haan met prijzen voor de kinderen. Wij komen tegen: ansichtkaarten van mevrouw Versluys en van Jacq. van Cleef (die later Pijpelijntjes zou uitgeven), sprookjesboeken van Martha van Eeden-Van Vloten, een Chinese pop van Henri Borel, een ‘generaaltje’ en een paar maanden later een speelgoedstoommachine van de Groningse romanist A.G. van Hamel, alsmede exemplaren van Afke's tiental van Nienke van Hichtum en abonnementen op Ons Blaadje van Nellie van Kol. De Haan slaagde erin een paar illustere namen aan zijn rubriek te verbinden. Ook onder de medewerkers treffen we bekende figuren aan, zoals Albert Hahn (die een ‘extra-mooie ondertekening’ voor De Haan ontwierp), de tekenaars Ko Doncker en Chris Kras Kzn (Jan Feith), Nelly Bodenheim, Lizzy Ansingh, Nienke van Hichtum; ook Speenhoff, die in februari 1904 in De Ware Jacob als ‘bekende tijdgenoot’ werd afgebeeld, beloofde plaatjes (1 november 1903). De Haan heeft duidelijk van zijn kinderrubriek iets willen maken. Het plaatje van de poppen, de verantwoording van de opgestuurde kaarten en de namen van hun verzenders en de ‘baby's’ van Verwey (Jan, Mea, Martha, Lisabet en Gonda) stonden op 21 juni in de krant. Met de ‘ons’ die het goed ging bij de verkiezingen in Duitsland, bedoelde De Haan natuurlijk de socialisten. Verwey las Het Volk145.. |
