Brieven van en aan Jacob Israël de Haan 1899-1908
(2018)–Jacob Israël de Haan– Auteursrechtelijk beschermd1903Het jaar 1903 bracht in het leven van Jacob Israël de Haan ingrijpende veranderingen. Eind mei nam hij afscheid van zijn school131.. Hij zocht voorlopig geen nieuw baantje bij het onderwijs. Sinds 26 april was hij aan Het Volk verbonden, het partijblad van de SDAP, als redacteur van de kinderrubriek van het Zondagsblad, die op die datum voor het eerst verscheen. Het is ons niet bekend hoe het contact met Het Volk gelegd is. Men zou aan Kees van Bruggen kunnen denken, die immers redacteur van Het Volk was, verantwoordelijk voor het Zondagsblad, maar de slechte verstandhouding tussen Van Bruggen en hoofdredacteur Troelstra maakt dat niet waarschijnlijk. Het boterde allang niet tussen die twee heren. Troelstra meende ‘dat zijne [Van Bruggens] aanstelling aan ons blad een vergissing is geweest’ en verzocht het Partijbestuur op 2 mei 1903 Van Bruggen te ontslaan. Deze vroeg op 6 mei 1903 zelf om ontslag ‘tegen 1 November van dit jaar’. Het werd hem op 6 juli 1903 ‘eervol tegen 1 September [...] verleend’, enige tijd voordat Troelstra zelf door Tak als hoofdredacteur werd verdrongen132.. Tegelijk met Carry is Jacob Israël lid van de SDAP geworden, vòòr 25 februari 1903: als zijn adres werd op de ledenlijst van de afdeling Amsterdam (waar broer en zus na elkaar staan) de Van Ostadestraat genoemd. Op 27 maart 1903 werd hij, zoals Het Volk van 29 maart vermeldt, tot secretaris van district Amsterdam V van de SDAP gekozen. Opvallend is het ontbreken van Van Eeden-brieven in dit jaar. Stokte de correspondentie? Van Eeden had met de socialisten weinig op, hij vond ze doctrinair, machtlievend en moraalloos, niet in staat de socialistische Idee te verwezenlijken, zoals de kerken in zijn oordeel niet in staat waren het evangelie in praktijk te brengen133.. In Het Volksdagblad van 10 juni 1903 schreef hij ‘De campagne van “het Volk” tegen Walden’, een stuk dat er geen doekjes om windt. Nam hij De Haan zijn relatie met de SDAP en Het Volk kwalijk? Maar hij wist toch veel te goed hoe sceptisch De Haan zich over de socialisten kon uitlaten? Trad er tussen de vrienden een verwijdering van andere aard op? We hebben er geen aanwijzing voor. Integendeel, in een brief aan Saalborn134. noemt De Haan naast Aletrino Van Eeden als zijn beste vriend en in de kinderrubriek in Het Volk van 21 juni 1903 schrijft hij als terloops: ‘Ja, dat Walden is maar een goed land. Ik was er vandaag’. Misschien zagen De Haan en Van Eeden elkaar te vaak? Maar afspraken en ontmoetingen waren voor De Haan nooit aanleiding de correspondentie op te schorten. Misschien heeft Van Eeden de brieven van dat jaar vernietigd, óf omdat ze te intiem van karakter werden óf onder de indruk van de publicatie van Pijpelijntjes in juni 1904 en het schandaal dat rondom die roman losbrak? We weten het niet. Ook het dagboek van Van Eeden helpt ons niet. Op donderdag 11 februari 1904 vinden we pas de allereerste vermelding van De Haans naam in dat dagboek (men kan dat veelzeggend vinden) en de passage is ondoordringbaar, raadselachtig, onheilszwanger: ‘Gister kwam hier Jacob de Haan en lokte mij uit, zoodat ik hem geducht de waarheid zei’. Op 25 februari 1903 verhuisde De Haan van de Van Ostadestraat naar Sint Willibrordusstraat 29 huis, alwaar hij tot 28 maart 1907 zou blijven wonen. Saalborn spreekt van ‘een sombere achterafstraat aan de zuidelijke periferie van buurt IJ.IJ., ook genaamd de Pijp’135.. De grens tussen de Amsterdamse ‘Pijp’ en de aangrenzende gemeente Nieuwer-Amstel liep precies midden door de St. Willibrordstraat (zoals De Haan zijn adres steeds aanduidde) en hij woonde aan de Nieuweramstelse kant. Blijkens een brief aan Saalborn136. beschouwde De Haan zijn onderkomen niet als proletarisch. In Pijpelijntjes, waar Joop en Sam op ‘huiszoeking’ in de ‘St. Willibrordstraat’ terechtkomen ‘op 29 in 't huis’, heet het: ‘De kamer was groot en lucht-ruim’137.. Hoofdbewoner was, sinds 28 november 1900, Johan Wiedeler met echtgenote. Op 12 maart 1902 was deze Wiedeler evenwel naar Haarlem verhuisd138., naar de strafgevangenis, tegelijk met zijn onderhuurder Petrus Johannes de Lat, die tevoren ook tegelijk met hem uit de Ferdinand Bolstraat naar de Sint Willibrordusstraat was getrokken. Toen De Haan daar kwam wonen, was de echtgenote van Wiedeler dus in haar eentje hoofdbewoner; daarom duikt in Woningboek S 43 in het Amsterdamse stadsarchief haar meisjesnaam op: Catharina Hendrika Feks. Zij leefde van 1857 tot 1937 en wij herkennen haar als juffrouw Meks (voornaam: ‘Ketoo’) in Pijpelijntjes, waar ze beschreven wordt als ‘klein vrouwtje donker, met grijzig haar al 'n beetje, eventjes scheel aan een kant’139.. Achter de naam van Jakob Israël de Haan staat in het Woningboek ingevuld: ‘2 p[ersonen]’, èn doorgeschrapt, zonder tijdsaanduiding. Even meent men een glimp van de geheimzinnige figuur van Sam op te vangen. Met die tweede persoon is in ieder geval Carry van Bruggen bedoeld geweest, die van 28 februari 1903 tot 6 januari 1904 op dit adres ingeschreven heeft gestaan. Mies de Haan herinnert zich in De kinderen van de gazzan (1966) hoe haar broer en zuster Joop en Carry ‘samen met Speenhoff’ in de St. Willibrordusstraat woonden, en hoe zij daar eens kwam eten: ‘Speenhoff was aan het middagmaal bezig’ en daarbij werd ‘vlees gebraden in boter’, wat in strijd was met de joodse spijswetten. ‘Aan tafel werd’, vertelt ze, ‘een apart hoekje voor mij gedekt, met broodjes pekelvlees en fruit’ (p. 24/5). Het is een van de schaarse gegevens met betrekking tot De Haans verhouding tot het ouderlijk geloof. Carry de Haan stond intussen weliswaar op De Haans adres ingeschreven, maar heeft er niet gewoond. Van een verblijf van Speenhoff op De Haans adres is ons niets bekend. De Haans nieuwe adres, bestemd om een van de beroemdste adressen in de Nederlandse literatuur te worden, prijkte op 26 april 1903 voluit boven de kinderrubriek in het Zondagsblad van Het Volk: daar werden kopij en correspondentie verwacht, niet op de Geldersekade, waar de redactie van Het Volk gevestigd was. Op de Geldersekade kwam De Haan niet dikwijls. Toen hij later met hoofdredacteur P.L. Tak in conflict raakte, schreef hij: ‘gij kende mij nauwelijks van aanzien en stem, wijl ik thuis mijn deel bewerkte en zeldzaam op uw bureau verscheen’140.. In Het Volk van 2 augustus 1903 is sprake van een ‘vrind’ die op De Haans privéadres een kindertekeningetje in ontvangst had genomen: ‘m'n vrind heeft daar niets over te zeggen’ schreef De Haan. Er kan iemand bij hem gewoond hebben, maar wie dat geweest is, weten we niet. De vriend zou ook een bezoeker kunnen; in brief 37 uit zomer 1903 lijkt Aletrino bij De Haan thuis te zijn geweest.
In een lezing over ‘Dichtkunst en het zeggen van verzen’, die De Haan in december 1913 in Groningen voor het studentengezelschap Discendo Discimus hield141., geeft hij een terugblik op de ontwikkeling van zijn schrijverschap: ‘eerst dichtte ik, toen schreef ik proza, nu dicht ik weer’. In 1903 debuteerde De Haan met zijn volledige achternaam als prozaïst. Op 19 april, nog vóór hij aantrad als redacteur van de kinderrubriek, verscheen met Jacob de Haan ondertekend proza in Het Volk142.: de schets ‘Van een staking’, gelegenheidswerk, aanknopend bij de actualiteit, die beheerst werd door de roemruchte stakingen van 1903. De eerste grote spoorwegstaking in Nederland was op 29 januari 1903 begonnen als ‘solidariteitsstaking’ wegens de onrechtvaardig geachte schorsing van een spoorwegarbeider te Amsterdam en eindigde al na drie dagen met een eclatante overwinning voor de arbeiders: een reeks eisen, zoals verhoging van het loon, verkorting van de werktijd en erkenning van de vakbonden als vertegenwoordigers der werknemers, werd door de spoorwegdirecties zonder slag of stoot ingewilligd. In feite was de machtsontplooiing van de stakers zo indrukwekkend (iedereen kent de majestueuze plaat van Albert Hahn in Het Volk met het zelfbewuste onderschrift) dat bourgeoisie en burgerlijke regering de schrik om het hart sloeg. De minister-president, Abraham Kuyper, ontwierp ijlings een aantal wetsvoorstellen om het stakingsrecht in te perken en riep ‘miliciens’ onder de wapenen: men vreesde revolutie. Toen op 8 april 1903 Kuypers ‘worgwetten’ in de Tweede Kamer behandeld en aangenomen werden, was er al een nieuwe spoorwegstaking uitgeroepen, die tot een algemene staking aangroeide, maar deze keer slaagden de arbeiders er niet in een gesloten front te vormen, er brak onenigheid uit tussen confessionelen en niet-confessionelen, Kuyper liet de stations door militairen bezetten en de staking eindigde vóór de maand om was in een verschrikkelijke nederlaag. Met alles wat naar revolutie zweemde, maakte men korte metten. Duizenden arbeiders werden ontslagen en moesten maar zien hoe ze zich voortaan in leven hielden, alleen rondkomend van de steun van particuliere comités (maar ook over die steun heerste onenigheid)143.. In De Haans schets is sprake van een staker die een onderkruiper een stomp gegeven en daar een jaar voor gekregen heeft. De Haan vertelt het verhaal ietwat eigenaardig vanuit het gezichtspunt van het zieke zoontje van de staker, dat in het ziekenhuis nu geen bezoek krijgt. Ook voor later proza koos De Haan zijn onderwerpen graag in de sfeer van politiek en socialisme. Zo vertelt de schets ‘De Standaard’ (Het Volk 24 mei 1903) van een man die, ontslagen bij de spoor, niet meer aan de slag komt en tekent voor het Indische leger. En ‘Een smart’, van 13 september, vertelt het droevig relaas van een bejaard spoorwegman die in april, toen het erop aan kwam, niet mee durfde doen: ‘Klein en ellendig met pijn overal stond de oude voor z'n chef en huilde...’ Deze socialistisch getinte schetsen kan men moeilijk anders zien dan als gelegenheidswerk. Toch is er soms aanleiding om ze te waarderen als vingeroefening voor het latere, grotere proza, met name de roman Pijpelijntjes van 1904. In de schets ‘Armoeskind’ van 9 augustus 1903 herkennen we het motief van de ‘smerige bleeke jongen’ die op de Dam tramkaartjes verkoopt zoals Koos in Pijpelijntjes in het hoofdstuk ‘Lieve student’, en het motief van de snijkamer zoals dat in de roman o.a. voorkomt in het hoofdstuk ‘Malle begrafenis’. Toen De Haan in 1904 een bloemlezing Kanalje samenstelde, liet hij zijn keuze duidelijk bepalen door het ‘socialistisch’ gehalte van de schetsen in Het Volk. De bundel geeft een eenzijdig beeld van zijn activiteit als prozaïst in die tijd. Naast het proza hield De Haan zich steeds bezig met poëzie. In het tijdschrift Nederland publiceerde hij een zevental verzen, waaronder ‘Van 't leven’ (met de intrigerende beginregels: ‘Mijn vriend zegt: je moet voorzichtig zijn, / En anders wil ik de vrind niet zijn, / Hi, hi, die voorzichtige vrinden’) en het aan Giza opgedragen ‘Regen in stad’ (met de beginregels: ‘Het regent zachtjes op de stad / En al zijn zwarte narigheid’). Hoofdwerk uit deze periode is wel het dramatische gedicht ‘Spel van verwoest Jeruzalem’, eveneens gepubliceerd in Nederland en ‘met diepsten eerbied en vriendschap’ opgedragen aan Aletrino. (Deze droeg op zijn beurt zijn verhaal ‘Zomeravond’, een uiterst sombere vertelling vol ziekenhuismisère, geschreven december 1903 en gepubliceerd in De XXe Eeuw, april 1904, aan Jacob de Haan op. Het werd in 1906 herdrukt in Line, zonder opdracht.) Voor de krant schreef De Haan ook ‘socialistische’ rijmsels, eveneens gelegenheidswerk. In juni 1903 nam De Haan weer contact met Albert Verwey op. De brief is gestempeld: 10 juni in Amsterdam en 11 juni in Noordwijk. De Haan komt Giza Ritschl opzoeken, die kennelijk in Noordwijk vertoeft. Het logeetje dat hij meebrengt, zal Ilonka geweest zijn, ‘nichtje, volgens anderen een dochter van Giza Ritschl’144.. Het is onzeker of De Haan die elfde juni, een donderdag, les gaf dan wel les kreeg. Naast de krant had hij nog andere bronnen van inkomsten in vertaalwerk en in het geven van privé-lessen, terwijl hij zelf studeerde voor het Staatsexamen. In het Zondagsblad van 21 juni 1903 lezen we: ‘Ik was een paar dagen in Noordwijk. Dat is nou mijn vacantie voor 't heele jaar’. |
