Our people which now are reduced to Van der Cruyf, Loover and DanserwegGa naar voetnoot3) have been with H.H. and they flatter themselves that the demission of Van Berckell, Van der Hoeven, Hogendorp and Van Teylingen will meet with no opposition. them the more odious. Van der Meer is acting a dubble part and has done a thing within these few days which must ruin him in the opinion of all honest and wellmeaning men; he has most strongly spoke to the Princess in favour of one Erbervelt, an expagter of this city, who by the gecommitteerde raeden was proposed to be comptroller of the collectors of the different taxes; and to corroborate the thing, it was spread all over the province that he was recommended by H.R.H., which our people found by what the Princess told them herself, to be false. A quondam clerck of Erbervelts has been att The Hague and has given such vouchers of Erbervelts past conduct, that the Prince has ordered them to be put in the hands of the fiscael. I hope that heGa naar voetnoot5) will act an honest part in this affair, but I hear that Erbervelt is a person of his recommending. The publicationGa naar voetnoot6) of the magistrates of Amsterdam which is in the papers of this dayGa naar voetnoot7) will I hope make the people easy and make them so quiet as to concurr to contribute cheerfully to the taxes. The gecommitteerde raed are making great inquiries about a pamphlet which is intitled samenspraek tussen een Rotterdammer en een HagenaarGa naar voetnoot8); it is chiefly aimed att s'GravenmoerGa naar voetnoot9), the pensionary, Van WeeseleGa naar voetnoot10) and De ByeGa naar voetnoot11), and seems to be wrote | |

by a man who knows these gentlemen and the secret of pagts. There is but one copy of it in this I own, but if you have a mind to see it, I will gett it copyed for you. I long to have your answer to my last letter. Lord Sandwich will, I believe, communicate to you my remarks upon the conseil de commerce to beGa naar voetnoot12). P.S. Since this morning a great rancour has discovered itself amongst the people against our three patriots for pretending to screen burgomaster De MeyGa naar voetnoot13, who indeed from his conversion deserves it, but I have told our people that this desire of saving him, must not be carried so far as to ruin our salutary views and upon the whole I have exhorted them to make their complaints in general terms without naming att first either the magistrates that they wish to see dismissed, or much less those that they want to see in their places. |
