Jeugd in China
| |
Ondergrond- en ‘litteken’literatuurGa naar voetnoot1Er zijn vele soorten van literatuur. Er zijn de officiële en de parallelle (ondergrondse) tijdschriften. Er is de met de hand geschreven literatuur verspreid onder de mensen. Er is de literatuur van de diaspora-Chinezen en van de Chinese Republiek (Taiwan). Er zijn de Chinese romans en de ‘litteken’-literatuur die de wonden beschrijft van het onderdrukte Chinese volk, vooral gedurende de Culturele Revolutie. Belangrijk is de literatuur waarin het volk zijn eigen ervaringen weerspiegeld ziet en die daarom graag gelezen wordt. Vooral de ondergrondse publikaties en de muurkranten (1978-79) onder de leiding van de jeugd hebben veel bijgedragen tot de bewustmaking van het volk, dat de bureaucratische controle verfoeide. censuur onderworpen werd en gebonden was aan de enge richtlijnen van de Partij. De regering vond de kritiek op haar beleid gevaarlijk, oordeelde dat de overdreven hang naar democratie, die zij als bourgeois bestempelde, de pan uitrees en naar anarchie leidde. Ze kritiseerde, veroordeelde en strafte schrijvers. Maar belangrijk is het feit dat deze ‘vrije’ literatuur niet meer ongedaan kan worden gemaakt. Ook de poëzie bloeide. Vooral de liefde-poëzie was in. Jonge poëten kwamen op het voorplan zoals Gucheng met zijn gedicht Luchtbellen: ‘Ik slaagde er niet in, de luchtbel terug te brengen op de gave grond van de werkelijkheid’. Shu Ding is de dichteres van het ‘Ego’, die op humanistische wijze op ontdekking gaat van het ‘Zelf’. Het is een poëzie in de experimentele fase, waarmee niet iedereen gelukkig is omdat ze te duister is en te slaafs het Westen navolgt. Uit de wijde waaier van Chinese literatuur kunnen we drie feiten afleiden: de wrede behandeling van het volk die vooral tot uiting komt in de ‘litteken’-literatuur, het succes van de liefdeverhalen en de verkenning van het ‘ik’ op zoek naar bewustzijn. De jeugd heeft die literatuur gelezen. Ze hebben daarbij hun eigen ervaring. Ze hebben alles meegemaakt: de politieke veranderingen, de vervolgingen, de goede en de slechte dingen zoals de ‘Grote sprong naar voren’ en de ‘Culturele Revolutie’. Iedereen heeft eronder geleden. Dit heeft aanleiding gegeven tot een cynische houding. De jeugd zoekt naar waarden die soms het aardse overstijgen. Ze zoekt naar het beeld dat de mensen zouden moeten hebben van hun toekomst. De Chinese jeugd gaat echter niet zo ver als de Westerse jeugd. Ze is niet zo rücksichtslos. | |
Culturele revolutie en nieuwe klassentegenstellingenGa naar voetnoot2Op het einde van de jaren zestig zijn vele landen in het Westen geconfronteerd geworden met jeugdopstanden. Europese studenten die vochten in de straten van Parijs en Berlijn voelden zich geïnspireerd door wat er in China gebeurde, namelijk de Culturele Revolutie (CR). Zij verkeerden in de mening dat de CR (anders dan in de Sovjetunie) een poging was om de democratie te verwezenlijken in een socialistisch land. China scheen het enige land te zijn waar de communistische partij gesteund was door het | |

volk en waar de partij bij machte was om het volk te mobiliseren voor politieke doeleinden. Nu beschouwen de leiders in China de CR als de grootste catastrofe in de geschiedenis van de Chinese Volksrepubliek en het Westen weet nu ook wel beter. Hoe kan men verklaren dat de jeugd in China zo enthousiast Mao's oproep ‘Bombardeer de hoofdkwartieren’ beantwoordde en hoe reageerde ze op de kronkelingen van de politiek gedurende de CR? Om dit te begrijpen moeten we eerst de situatie kennen van de Chinese jeugd vóór de CR. Op het einde van de jaren vijftig ging het, ten gevolge van de mislukte ‘Grote sprong naar voren’ en de scheur in de Sino-Sovjet-betrekkingen, bergafwaarts met de economische expansie. In deze situatie van economische crisis, werd de ideologische indoctrinatie kracht bijgezet. De Chinese jeugd werd opgesplitst in verschillende groepen naarmate hun klasseafkomst en hun uiteenlopende reacties op de druk waaraan ze blootstonden. Er waren de zonen en dochters van de officiële ambtenaren. Hun positie was de beste. Zij leden niet zoveel onder de economische crisis als de anderen en de toekomst lag voor hen open: hun klasse-achtergrond gaf hun toegang tot de middelbare scholen en universiteiten. De tweede groep was die van de midden-klasse (burgerij), vooral de kinderen van intellectuelen. Ze werden niet beschouwd als revolutionairen, maar ook niet als contra-revolutionairen. Gediscrimineerd zolang de klasse-achtergrond de maatstaf was om tot de universiteiten te worden toegelaten, groeiden hun kansen toen meer nadruk gelegd werd op bekwaamheid en politiek gedrag. Velen konden zelfs lid worden van de ‘communistische jeugdliga’ en zo hun toekomstkansen vergroten. Dit gaf dan weer aanleiding tot conflicten met de jongeren uit de eerste groep die over het algemeen niet zo bekwaam waren. De kinderen van de arbeidersklasse vormden de derde groep. De meesten van hen wilden arbeiders worden zoals hun ouders. Maar het was moeilijk, werk te vinden in de industrie. Of omdat ze niet geoefend waren en daarom niet als normale arbeiders beschouwd werden, lag hun loon laag. Wie er niet in slaagde naar de universiteit te gaan of een job in de stad te vinden, was gedwongen naar het platteland te trekken. De boeren waren arm en beschouwden de nieuwkomers meer als ‘eters’ dan als arbeiders. De vierde groep bestond uit afstammelingen van de slechte klassen: kinderen van voormalige kapitalisten, van rijke boeren en grootgrondbezitters, van personen die na de campagne ‘Laat honderd bloemen bloeien’ als ‘rechtsen’ bestempeld werden, van contra-revolutionairen of misdadigers. | |

Ze werden als buitenstaanders beschouwd en konden moeilijk ergens binnen geraken. Daar ze geen kans kregen om politiek te presteren, zaten ze gevangen in het net van hun klasse. Slechts in tijden waarin de politieke factoren sterk verwaarloosd werden, hadden ze een kans om hun studies aan de universiteit voort te zetten. Kortom, de situatie van de jeugd vóór de CR was er een van slinkende kansen. Ondanks al deze problemen misprees de jeugd de maatschappij waarin ze leefde niet, ze was gewoon een onderdeel van een sociaal systeem. Hun gedachten waren volledig geconcentreerd op de vraag: hoe kan ik de positie behouden die mijn ouders bereikt hebben, of: hoe kan ik op de sociale en politieke statusladder hogerop geraken, met al de economische en culturele privileges die daaraan verbonden zijn? Maar die opvatting strookte niet met wat de Partij wilde. De Partij wil namelijk dat wie de revolutie volgt, iemand is waarover ze volledig vrij kan beschikken. Het gevolg daarvan was dat de Chinese jeugd haar verwachtingen op een meer politieke manier tot uiting bracht: met enthousiasme volgde zij de richtlijnen van de Partij op. Zo konden zij hun persoonlijke belangen combineren met de politieke en ideologische eisen waarmee ze geconfronteerd waren. Of het gemeend was of niet, was bijzaak. Zeker was hun politiek enthousiasme niet uitsluitend ingegeven door liefde voor Mao en geestdrift voor zijn visie op de opbouw van een socialistische maatschappij. In de eerste fase van de CR, toen het hoofddoel nog was: ‘alle monsters en geesten uit te drijven’ en de zuiverheid van de revolutionaire maatschappij te verdedigen tegen ‘bourgeois’ en ‘slechte’ elementen, vormden de zonen en dochters van kaders de meest actieve groep. Fier over hun nieuwe opgang en erop belust om dit te wettigen, lanceerde zij de slogan: ‘Wanneer de vader een held is, is de zoon een manhaftige kerel. Wanneer de vader een reactionair is, is de zoon een bastaard’. Zij waren het ook die de eerste ‘Rode Garden’-organisatie stichtten op de middelbare school van de Qinghua-Universiteit. Ze werden daarin volledig gesteund door Mao Zedong. De kinderen van de middenklasse waren er zich van bewust dat deze beweging hun belangen schaadde. Maar aangezien de anderen de steun hadden van Mao, durfden ze er niets tegen ondernemen. Maar reeds in mei 1966 kwam er een koerswijziging. Een richtlijn van 16 mei 1966 deelde mee dat van nu af het hoofddoel van de beweging was: te vechten tegen de ‘aanhangers van het kapitalisme binnen de Partij’. Dit was het begin van de tweede fase van de CR. zich wilde inzetten voor de politiek van de regering. Ze waren hun voorrangs-positie kwijt. Alleen de meest actieven onder hen deden nog echt mee. De kinderen van de middenklasse stichtten hun eigen Rode Gardenorganisatie en noemden zichzelf ‘rebellen’. Andere groepen van jongeren begonnen zichzelf te organiseren. De paria's uit de gebrandmerkte klassen van grootgrondbezitters, kapitalisten en rijken grepen de kans om door extreem-actieve deelname aan de CR te bewijzen dat ze die veroordeelde klasse ontgroeid en nu echte proletariërs waren. Ze hoopten nu ook lid te kunnen worden van de communistische jeugdliga of van de Partij, verder te mogen studeren, promoties te maken in hun werk... Het conflict tussen de Rode Garden en de Rebellen mondde uit in een mini-burgeroorlog. Mao zelf verklaarde: ‘Het begon met stokken, dan met geweren en tenslotte met kanonnen’. Vandaag bekennen de mensen in China dat er geen enkele familie is waar geen doden of gewonden te betreuren zijn. In 1967 kwam het Bevrijdingsleger tussenbeide. Het leger stelde zich op aan de zijde van de Rode Garden tegen de Rebellen. Tenslotte werd de jeugd naar de scholen, fabrieken of volkscommunes teruggestuurd. Tussen 1968 en 1975 werden twaalf miljoen jongeren naar het platteland gestuurd. Alleen leden van de Rode Garden of voormalige leden van de communistische jeugdliga kregen werk in de steden. Het zag ernaar uit dat de zonen en dochters van partij-kaders de ‘kinderoorlog’ hadden gewonnen. Vele studenten, vooral die uit de middenklasse, waren ontgoocheld na al die jaren van intense strijd. Sommigen onder hen behoorden tot de groep die in 1974 in Canton muurkranten schreven met radicale kritiek op het sociale systeem van de Chinese Volksrepubliek na Mao's dood. Velen zijn gearresteerd, gedood of gevangen genomen gedurende het Tien-an-men-incident op 5 april 1976. De sterke man Deng Xiaoping vond ze te gevaarlijk. De Chinese jongeren in de vroege en late jaren zestig hoopten nog dat, indien niet de Partij, dan tenminste Mao een oplossing kon vinden voor hun vele problemen. De generatie van jongeren wie ten gevolge van de CR de toegang tot de school verboden werd en die vandaag werkloos zijn, is onverschillig geworden. Ze willen hun radio en zonnebril uit Hong Kong. Aan wat de Partij zegt, hechten zij niet veel belang meer. Ze beschouwen zichzelf als de slachtoffers van de maatschappij en daarom weigeren ze er deel van uit te maken. Al zijn er nog altijd wel jongeren die zich goed voelen en hopen in deze maatschappij vroeg of laat te slagen. | |

Jeugd en democratiseringsbewegingenGa naar voetnoot3Er hebben in China twee democratische bewegingen plaatsgevonden. De eerste in 1956: de beweging ‘Laat honderd bloemen bloeien’. Het was een klassieke beweging, geleid door intellectuelen. Ze werd in de kiem gesmoord. De grote ‘anti-rechtsen beweging’ van 1957 zuiverde China van de leiders van de intellectuelen die streefden naar democratisering. De tweede vond plaats in 1978-79. Het was een beweging uitsluitend geleid door de jeugd. Meestal jonge arbeiders, opgevoed in het maoïsme, stelden het socialisme ter discussie. Factoren die de jeugd hadden wakker geschud waren: de Culturele Revolutie, de catastrofale toestand van de economie en de ondergrondse literatuur. In het begin werden ze gesteund door China's sterke man Deng Xiaoping die de muurkranten op de muur van de democratie toeliet. De reden was dat de kritiek op de Culturele Revolutie en de Bende van Vier (waaronder Mao's vrouw Jiang Qing) in zijn kaarten speelde, want hijzelf was twee maal slachtoffer geweest van de CR en de Bende. Zelfs de opstand van 5 april 1976 op het Tien-an-men-plein in Beijing, die toen met geweld onderdrukt werd en gevolgd door vele arrestaties van opstandelingen die als contra-revolutionairen bestempeld werden, heeft Deng Xiaoping uitgeroepen tot een nationaal feest om de martelaren van deze opstand te gedenken. In Beijing alleen verschenen een vijftigtal parallelle (ondergrondse) tijdschriften, waaronder De lente van Beijing, Exploratie, Tribune van de 5e april, Verlichting, enz. Hun aanvallen werden steeds driester. De dissident Wang Xizhi beschuldigde Mao van stalinisme en grootheidswaanzin. De beroemdste dissident is zonder twijfel Wei Jingsheng, de jonge uitgever van Exploratie, die democratie en de oprichting van partijen naast de communistische partij eiste. ‘Het is nodig dat het Chinese volk zijn rechten verovert door geweld... In ons land werd de alleenheerschappij van het marxisme en het maoïsme toegepast en daardoor genieten de arbeiders, de boeren en de soldaten geen enkele politieke vrijheid... De communistische partij is dictatoriaal geworden en dient niet langer de belangen van het volk’. Zelfs Deng Xiaoping werd scherp bekritiseerd. Dit ging te ver. Dat je dingen uit het verleden en theorieën die de regering ook afkeurt, aanvalt is dik in orde. Maar dat je de actuele leiders en hun actuele politiek aanvalt, is ongeoorloofd. deeld om daarna nog vijf jaren van zijn burgerrechten beroofd te worden. Velen werden na hem gearresteerd. De muren van de democratie werden afgeschaft en de parallelle tijdschriften verboden. De ‘vier grote rechten’ - vrij spreken, vrijuit zijn opinie uiten, grote debatten houden en muurkranten schrijven - werden in de Constitutie geschrapt. Van nu af moest elke burger zich onderwerpen aan de vier basisprincipes: de socialistische weg, de dictatuur van het proletariaat, de leidende rol van de Partij, het marxisme-leninisme en de Mao Zedong-gedachten. De acties van de vechters voor democratie werden bestempeld als anarchisme en uitingen van bourgeois-mentaliteit. Parallel met deze democratische beweging kwamen groepen aanklagers van overal in het land naar Beijing, nestelden zich in de straten of voor de gebouwen van de ministeries. Ze poogden aanklachten in te dienen aan de hoogste leiders om herstel te krijgen van hun verloren democratische rechten, voor de onrechten aangedaan gedurende de CR. Studenten en jonge stedelingen die gedwongen werden naar het platteland te gaan werken, eisten het recht op terug naar de stad te keren of hun studies voort te zetten. Regelmatig trokken demonstranten in lompen door de straten en scandeerden: ‘Wij hebben honger!’ Ze werden geduld, ze werden door lagere kaders gesust, maar kregen geen toegang tot de leiders van het volk. Karakteristiek voor deze tweede democratische beweging was dat de oude intelligentsia volledig afzijdig bleef. Ze had vroeger reeds te veel geleden. De angst voor een herhaling daarvan heeft doorgewogen op haar gedrag. De democratische beweging had enthousiasme en hoop gewekt onder de jeugd. Maar een echte democratie is dodelijk voor een totalitair regime. Ze werd onderdrukt. Maar is daarom niet dood. De nog smeulende asse kan weer oplaaien als de omstandigheden gunstig zijn. | |
JeugdwerkloosheidGa naar voetnoot4Het probleem van de jeugdwerkloosheid is reëel. Deng Xiaoping zelf verklaarde: ‘Er zijn problemen die ons land op het ogenblik niet bij machte is op te lossen. van 27 september 1982 stond te lezen: ‘Op het einde van de Culturele Revolutie in 1976 telde men werkzoekenden met miljoenen. Tussen 1977 en 1981 kwamen daar nog vele werklozen bij die het totale cijfer lieten oplopen tot meer dan 40 miljoen’. De oorzaken van de werkloosheid zijn velerlei: 1) De gebreken van het systeem: iedereen rekent volledig op de staat, zodat individuen geen mogelijkheid hebben om zelf werk te zoeken om met enthousiasme te arbeiden. Daarbij komen nog de tekorten van de economische structuren. 2) De Culturele Revolutie die de nationale economie op de rand van de afgrond bracht. 3) De jeugd die van het platteland terugkeerde naar de steden waar er geen voldoende werkgelegenheid was. 4) Er zijn teveel oude kaders en arbeiders die niet op rust willen gaan. 5) Tekort aan mogelijkheden voor hoger onderwijs. 6) De lage technische kennis van de jeugd. Hoe kan het probleem van de jeugdwerkloosheid opgelost worden? Ten eerste door de jeugd naar de staatshoeven en collectieve ondernemingen (volkscommunes) op het platteland te sturen. Ten tweede door de jeugd toe te laten initiatieven te nemen tot privé-produktie en zich te organiseren in coöperaties en teams die verantwoordelijk zijn voor eigen winsten en verliezen. Dan zou de staat ze niet hoeven te helpen en zou de jeugd blij en met geestdrift werken. Dit systeem heeft thans in China veel succes. Ten derde: door de jeugd kansen te bieden om zichzelf op scholen te ontwikkelen. En ten vierde: door voor de jeugd mogelijkheden te scheppen om zelf hun werk te zoeken en voor de onderneming om zelf hun arbeiders te kiezen. Deze oplossingen hebben ongetwijfeld resultaten opgeleverd. Maar de cijfers die in de Chinese pers geciteerd worden spreken elkaar tegen, zodat niemand met zekerheid kan weten hoeveel jeugdwerklozen er op het ogenblik zijn. Eén ding staat echter vast: er zijn nu veel minder werklozen dan enkele jaren terug. | |
Jeugd en sociale moraalIn China betekent sociale moraal een goed menselijk gedrag tegenover de omringende gemeenschap: eerlijkheid, dienstbaarheid, hoffelijkheid, netheid, vlijt. Specifiek voor China is echter dat deze moraal een socialistische moraal is, geïnspireerd door het marxisme en intiem vervlochten met de fundamentele politieke opties van de leiders aan de macht. wezenlijking van de Vier Moderniseringen... zijn bewijzen van goed sociaal gedrag. Een grote campagne werd opgezet voor het naleven van ‘de vijf klemtonen’ (decorum, goede manieren, gezondheid, discipline en goede zeden) en de ‘vier schoonheden’ (schoonheid van geest, taal, gedrag en omgeving). De Beijing Information van 27 juli 1981 schreef: ‘Onlangs gebruikten meer dan twee miljoen jongeren in Shanghai hun vakantie en vrije tijd om het verkeer te regelen, bejaarden en kinderen te helpen, de omgeving te verfraaien en informatie over hygiëne te propageren. Honderdduizend jongeren werden georganiseerd in 6.000 teams van vrijetijdsbesteding om foto's te nemen, haar te kappen, kleren te naaien en dagelijkse voorwerpen te herstellen, gratis of tegen een zeer kleine vergoeding. Ze werden door het volk zeer gewaardeerd... Deze activiteiten laten het geestelijk gelaat zien van de huidige jonge generatie’. Maar er zijn ook negatieve uitdrukkingen van sociale moraal die door de leiders streng afgekeurd en bestreden worden. De pers klaagt ze bijna dagelijks aan: schijnheiligheid, oneerlijkheid, jacht op geld, zelfzucht, het naäpen van vulgaire en decadente westerse zeden. En hier worden we dan geconfronteerd met het grote probleem van de jeugdcriminaliteit. Jiao Kun, adjunct-directeur van de veiligheid in Beijing bekende (zie Beijing Information, 23 febr. 1981) dat dit het belangrijkste probleem was van de openbare veiligheid: ‘Neem nu de misdadigers die we gearresteerd hebben tussen 1977 en 1980. Een goede 80% waren jongeren onder de 25 jaar’. De meest voorkomende gevallen zijn diefstal, bendenvorming en straatschenderij. Moord en verkrachtingen komen minder voor... Buitensporig alcoholverbruik is eerder zeldzaam. Er zijn geen drugverslaafden. De Chinese pers vindt dat de criminaliteit niet te wijten is aan het socialistisch systeem, maar wel een gevolg is van de sabotage van Lin Biao en de Bende van Vier gedurende de Culturele Revolutie. ‘In die jaren werd het wettelijk systeem met de voeten getreden, de sociale moraal slonk en het anarchisme groeide. Herrieschoppers en mensen die zich bezighielden met slaan, verbrijzelen en roven werden als ‘revolutionaire helden’ geprezen (B.I., 2 nov. 1979). Het feit dat alle scholen praktisch tien jaar gesloten waren, dat de jeugdwerkloosheid steeg en dat door de opening van China de nefaste invloed van de decadente westerse bourgeois-mentaliteit binnendrong hebben ook fel tot de jeugdmisdadigheid bijgedragen. de wet te eerbiedigen. Wie dit niet doet wordt gestraft. Daarbij worden in alle grote steden ‘heropvoedingsscholen voor de jeugd’ opgericht met het doel ze te hervormen door arbeid en ideologische vorming, zodat ze zich bekeren tot een nieuw leven om door eerlijk werk hun brood te verdienen. Het percentage van hervormde jongeren die na hun vrijlating in hun kwaal hervallen is 6%. Beijing Information van 15 maart 1982 schetst een interessant beeld van de jeugd in het district Longhai (Fujian), dat als representatief wordt beschouwd voor de hele landelijke jeugd die 80% van de jongeren telt. ‘De jongeren kunnen onderverdeeld worden in drie ideologische categorieën. 1) Degenen die enthousiast zijn vormen 25% van het geheel. Ze hebben hoge idealen en steken vol energie. Ze studeren met ijver wetenschap en technologie en wenden gewetensvol hun arbeid en kennis aan om de produktie te ontwikkelen. Velen vertonen mooie karaktertrekken, zoals graag anderen helpen, soms ten nadele van hun eigen belangen. 2) Jongeren die noch geïnspireerd, noch cynisch zijn maken de meerderheid uit van de landelijke jeugd. Ze hebben de fijne tradities van hun ouders geërfd: hard werken en sober leven. Ze steunen het socialisme en zijn gelukkig met de moderniseringscampagne. Sommigen onder hen zijn door hun arbeid rijk geworden. Hun hoogste betrachting is hun eigen levensstandaard te verhogen. Anderen stellen zich tevreden met een status quo en doen geen inspanning om hun ontwikkelingsniveau te verhogen en meer moderne landbouwtechnieken te beheersen. 3) Jongeren die zich afzijdig houden en zich niets aantrekken, vormen slechts een kleine minderheid. Anderen hebben geen belangstelling voor harde strijd. Ze zijn alleen uit op economische voordelen voor zichzelf en laten zich niets gelegen liggen aan de belangen van de staat, het collectief en de medemens. Een klein aantal jongeren zoeken persoonlijke winsten door middel van bedrog. Ze overtreden zelfs de wet’. Uit dit alles blijkt dat de Chinese pers in haar verklaringen een zekere eerlijkheid en openheid vertoont die er vroeger niet waren. Maar toch moeten we alles met een korreltje zout nemen. Vrij wetenschappelijk onderzoek door buitenlanders in China is immers totaal uitgesloten. De jeugd is zich bewust van het feit dat er nog altijd een kloof bestaat tussen de objectieve realiteit en de droom van een volmaakte socialistische maatschappij. Zij is kritischer geworden. Ze stelt zich vele vragen en neemt niet alles wat officieel geschreven of gezegd wordt klakkeloos aan. De slechte ervaringen die ze in het verleden heeft opgedaan hebben geleid tot een zekere frustratie en politieke apathie. Maar ondanks dit alles blijft de | |

grote meerderheid vaderlandslievend en is ze bereid een steentje bij te dragen voor de opbouw van het land die moet leiden naar een betere levensstandaard. | |
Jeugd en religieuze oplevingGa naar voetnoot5Zowel de nieuwsberichten uit China als getuigenissen van toeristen, vooral Chinezen die hun families bezoeken, wijzen op een algemene religieuze opleving niet alleen bij de christenen maar ook bij de boeddhisten, de taoïsten en de islam. Door de nieuwe, meer tolerante godsdienstpolitiek van de regering zijn reeds ongeveer 180 protestantse en 120 katholieke kerken heropend. De religieuze diensten worden er goed bijgewoond, op de grote kerkelijke feestdagen zoals Kerstdag en Pasen zelfs massaal. Telkens werd vastgesteld dat er een betrekkelijk groot aantal jongeren bij was. Er wordt catechismusonderricht gegeven. Doopsels van volwassenen en jongeren worden toegediend. Biechten worden gehoord. Meestal gebeurt dit in het kerkgebouw. Maar ook dikwijls in de huizen van de christenen waar ook kinderen gedoopt worden, hoewel de regering verbiedt jongeren te dopen onder de 18 jaar. Er zijn bedevaarten georganiseerd waar meer dan tienduizend katholieken aan deelnamen. In Nanjing werd in 1981 een protestantse domineeschool opgericht en in Beijing werd in oktober 1982 een katholiek priesterseminarie geopend. Er bestaan plannen om er nog twee te openen: een in Sheshan (bij Shanghai) en een in Noord-Oost-China. Honderden jonge kandidaten komen zich aanmelden. Maar men wil voorzichtig tewerkgaan. Daarom heeft men voor het priesterseminarie in Beijing slechts 40 kandidaten overgehouden. Er gebeuren soms vreemde dingen. Zo b.v. werden op twee plaatsen in de kuststreek in klaslokalen catechismus gegeven aan 40 kinderen en op een middelbare school godsdienstonderricht aan 20 volwassenen, ondanks het feit dat het streng verboden is godsdienstlessen in de scholen te geven. Men mag echter lokale toestanden niet veralgemenen. | |

De regering is gealarmeerd wanneer ze vaststelt dat na meer dan dertig jaar atheïstische propaganda, soms gepaard met godsdienstvervolging (gedurende de Culturele Revolutie), de jeugd belang blijft stellen in godsdienst. De Qingnienbao (jeugdkrant) van 26 april 1982 schreef: ‘Het is onmogelijk problemen op te lossen met de hulp van God. Alleen een gestructureerd communistisch systeem kan ze oplossen’. Dezelfde krant protesteerde heftig tegen het feit dat sommige leden van de Communistische Jeugdliga gelovig waren. Het is immers streng verboden dat gelovige mensen lid worden van de Jeugdliga of van de Partij. Paul Pang (Chinees franciscaan) bezocht zijn familie in 1980 en 1981. In 1980 las hij de mis thuis bij zijn familie. De assistentie van volwassenen en jongeren steeg van 60 de eerste dag tot 1.500 de vierde en laatste dag. Bij zijn tweede bezoek in 1981 waarschuwde zijn familie hem zich te onthouden van religieuze activiteiten omdat het verboden en gevaarlijk was. Vele jongeren vroegen om katholiek gedoopt te mogen worden. Men stelt zich bij dit verschijnsel van religieuze opleving onder de jongeren vele vragen. Hoe verklaart men dit? Voor jongeren in families met christelijke tradities is dit licht verklaarbaar. Maar de anderen? In Shandung worden vele jongeren katholiek uit bewondering voor de volharding van de gelovigen. Misschien is de reden ook te zoeken in de ontgoocheling van de jeugd, het zoeken naar de zin van het leven of wellicht uit nieuwsgierigheid. Volgens Jonathan Zhao, protestants dominee in Hong Kong, is de aangroei van protestanten in China enorm. Misschien is dit te verklaren door het feit dat de protestantse kerk meer liberaal is in tegenstelling met de katholieke kerk die er een strenge leer op nahoudt. | |
NabeschouwingDe jeugd in China worstelt met een vertrouwenscrisis. Er heerst wantrouwen tegenover de Partij, het marxisme en twijfel tegenover de superioriteit van het socialisme. De pers en ontmoetingen met jongeren in China tonen aan dat er tenminste drie groepen in de maatschappij te onderscheiden zijn. Dit komt duidelijk tot uiting in een studie van Yves Nalet in Projet (september-oktober 1981). Tussen de twee uitersten van, aan de ene kant, de ‘weldenkenden’ en aan de andere kant de ‘tegenstanders’ bevinden zich de ‘onvoldanen’. ben er volledig vertrouwen in. Ze zijn niet zo talrijk. Onder de tegenstanders vinden we ten eerste: de dissidenten die democratie en eerbeid voor de mensenrechten eisen. Hun getalsterkte is niet te onderschatten, al hebben niet allen de moed openlijk voor hun opvattingen uit te komen. In deze tweede groep horen ook de profiteurs thuis, die zich weinig inlaten met ideologie en politiek. Hun enig doel is zoveel mogelijk geld te verdienen en gemakkelijker te leven door gebruik te maken van de zwakheden van het systeem, de privileges van de kaders en de contradicties van de bureaucratie. De onvoldanen tenslotte vormen de overwegende meerderheid van de minder dan dertigjarigen. Ze hebben het allemaal bekeken, verwachten geen verrassingen meer. Ze verwerpen daarom het socialisme of het marxisme niet, maar ze zijn niet gelukkig met de vorm waaronder dit zich nu voordoet. Alles wat men hun voorschotelt wordt a priori met argwaan ter kennis genomen. Wel blijven ze bezield door liefde voor het vaderland, dienstbaarheid tegenover de medemens en de opbouw van een moderne en sterke natie. Ze dragen in zich de hoop en de belofte voor de toekomst van China. |
