Introduction
Dutch By Radio has over the past years established a wide popularity in over 80 countries. The present series is the fourth Dutch language course to be broadcast by Radio Nederland. As before there will be 26 broadcasts, each lasting fifteen minutes. This new course has been prepared to incorporate some of the new findings in language teaching. Thus, much emphasis is placed on the active participation of students during the broadcasts, when at each step immediate practice will be given in using language patterns and in achieving correct pronunciation. To consolidate the work on the latter, Radio Nederland is supplying with this course a small record with all the broadcast practices, so that students may play these over and perfect their pronunciation by constant reference and imitation between lessons.
Another new feature is to be found in the way the basic material is presented.
Throughout the course new elements of language are offered in dialogues arising out of some sort of everyday situation, which generally features a group of characters: Ricky, an announcer, her friend Peter, a teacher, and their mutual friend from abroad, Mark. It is hoped that this will make the course both highly practical for its language contents and entertaining for its situations.

Hints on studying
The materials of this course are closely woven together. Students may only expect maximum results if they use all the materials together, listening and studying both during and after the broadcasts.
A good plan for working with the course would be as follows:
1. | Listen to the broadcast, trying to understand the Dutch dialogues. If you feel the need, follow the dialogue with the text. Don't join in during the dialogue, as this will make it harder for you to concentrate on the sound and sense. |
2. | During discussion and explanations listen most carefully and only join in when a asked to do so by a signal. |
3. | After the broadcast study all the material again most carefully, using the vocabulary and the verb-list given at the end of each of the two parts of the book to clarify any doubtful points, and your record practise the correct pronunciation again and again. |
4. | Copy and complete the homework section on a postcard when you feel you have understood all the material, and sent it in. Keep a copy of your solutions to check with the discussion next time. |
5. | Listen to the repeat broadcast, concentrating on the dialogues and any point you did not quite understand the first time. Use the practices to test yourself on progress made since the first transmission. |
6. | Never miss the recapitulation programmes at the end of each series of dialogues, as these offer a special run of dialogues around a central theme. As the material of these programmes has been covered in the previous set of lessions, you will be able to enjoy the situations and experience how much you have already learned. |
7. | If you are so fortunate as to be able to use a tape-recorder for your language studies, it may be possible to record the lessons and so replay them as often as you need. This would give you an opportunity to listen to the dialogues and learn to imitate them. |
8. | If you live in a town you may be able to form a small club with other people also following these lessons. It would then be possible for the group to re-enact the dialogues for extra practice, members changing parts around the group. A small advertisement in your local paper may be useful here. |
9. | Those students who wish to make a more detailed study of the Dutch language, with much more attention to grammatical theory than is useful or practical in a radio series, may find William Z. Shetter's ‘Introduction to Dutch’ published by Martinus Nijhoff in The Hague, helpful. |
Radio Nederland cannot undertake to supply taped copies of the lessons, addresses of other subscribers to the series, or the book by William Z. Shetter
Students are invited to send in their questions and comments arising out of the broadcast lessons. These will be dealt with in the transmissions of weeks 6, 16, and 25.
