The Plantin Moretus archives: an index to Jan Denucé's inventory of 1926
C. Coppens
The Plantin-Morerus Archives are unique, being kept roughly from the middle of the sixteenth to the middle of the nineteenth century, for printing and booktrade history, but also for economic history. They are evidence of how quite a wealthy family lived through more than three centuries. The economic archives are basic to understand the whole business. When the booktrade declined and bookproduction was very much specialised, they had estates and dealt with other merchandise, like cloth for instance. The booktrade became only one aspect of the whole family business. The monopoly in the production of liturgical books was the easiest way to make money. With the same books being constantly reproduced, there was nothing more to invent, there was no risk. Unfortunately enough the inventory of the Plantin-Moretus Archives was not set out in the best way to make it easily accessible for scientific research.Ga naar voetnoot1 This index is intended to facilitate scholarly use of the inventory.
The first part (I-II) of this index is based on the structure of Plantin bookkeeping, the Grand livre being the final ‘summary’ of the journal(s), the Journal keeping the daily notes of the printing

business and the booktrade. It are precisely the journals which reflect the complexity of Plantin bookkeeping. Apart from the Journal several smaller memorandum books were kept, all together showing detailed aspects of the whole business. As they are particularly useful for different approaches within bookhistorical research, they are listed separately.
The second part (III), the correspondence, is in Denucé's inventory mainly arranged in two large series, listed alphabetically, and is here listed merely in chronological order. The third part (IV), the family & economic archives, is in chronological order, with the other, related, family archives set down separately. These documents came to the Plantin house through the marriages of members of the Moretus family and they sometimes contain archival material dating from before the actual alliance of both families. It is clear also that these families intermarried through the centuries. It seems appropriate here to mention the family archives related to the Moretuses kept in the Antwerp City Archives.Ga naar voetnoot2
Systematic bookkeeping developed first in Italy and spread beyond the Alps, especially in the Low Countries which had business relations with Italy ever since the Middle Ages. In Italy it was the mathematician and Franciscan monk Luca Paciolo (c. 1445-1514?) who set down the art of double bookkeeping in his wellknown Summa de arithmetica (ed. princ. Venice 1494, 2nd ed. 1523). In the Southern Netherlands it wasjan Ympyn (alias Jan Impens Christoffels) (c. 1490-1540), an Antwerp merchant who stayed more than ten years in Italy himself, who composed the first treatise on bookkeeping, based on Paciolo's chapter De computis et scripturis and also on the Luminario de arithmetica (1525) of the writing master Giovanni Antonio de Tagliente (1465/70-1528?). Both authors are mentioned by Ympyn. However,

Ympyn proved to be very skilled in bookkeeping himself and was original in his practical part where he adapted the Italian practice to the customs of The Netherlands. His tract was published in 1543 by his widow, Anna Swinters, and printed by Giles Coppens of Diest (BT 4982). The same year a French translation was published (BT 7192). An English translation of the French text was printed in London by Richard Grafton in 1547 (STC 26093.5). In Antwerp his example was followed by schoolmasters like Valentin Mennher (c. 1521-1570), a German from Bavaria, with several treatises, the first published in 1550, like Bartholomew of Renterghem (1592), Martin van den Dycke (d. 1601 or after) (1598) or Zacharias van Hoorebeke (1599). In the meantime, in 1567, Plantin himself had printed a treatise about bookkeeping by a countryman of his, Pierre Savonne (c. 1540-after 1576), Instruction et manière de tenir livre de raison ou de compte par parties doubles.Ga naar voetnoot3
Only for a short period, from the end of 1563 to 1567, Plantin bookkeeping was strictly based on the Italian model of double-entry bookkeeping. During these few years Plantin was in partnership with Cornelius (c. 1533-1577) and Charles (before 1530-before 1607) van Bomberghen, two cousins, the latter being the son of the Venice printer of Antwerp origin, Daniele Bomberg (1483-1553), Joannes Goropius Becanus (1519-1573), a physician and philologist, and the Venetian merchant Jacopo de' Schotti, brother-in-law of Cornelius.Ga naar voetnoot4 The last of these kept the books of the partnership, a journal and a ledger, in Italian, according to the rules laid down by Paciolo and based on the memorandum books noted by Plantin himself. Plantin already did his bookkeeping be- | |

fore the partnership, from 1555 onwards, but not in double-entry form. When the partnership was dissolved, Joannes Moretus, who went to Venice to work with the de' Scotti family during Plantin's exile in Paris (1562/63), was in charge of the bookkeeping and returned to the single-entry form. Plantin might have found it too time-consuming and not necessary for evaluating the financial situation for himself. Several subsidiary account books were kept. The ledger, Grand livre, and the journal, Journal, remained the main instruments. For some entries special ledgers were started, for instance one for dealings
with the booksellers, further divided into libraires d'Anvers and libraires étrangers, and another for retail bookselling. Besides these there were, extracted from the ledgers, a livre des ventes à la boutique, a livre des ouvriers or wage book, a livre des ustensiles, a ‘plant ledger’, a livre or mémorial des relieurs, dealing with the binders, a cahier de Francfort, for the bookfairs, and a livre de caisse, for cash receipts. A Grand livre C dealt, among other things, with accounts of lenders, as for instance the Spanish king, Philip II, for the financing of the polyglot Bible.Ga naar voetnoot5 The ledgers mostly have contemporary name indexes themselves.Ga naar voetnoot6 As there is often an overlap between the existing books, the alert scholar has to check more than one.

This index tries to make a ‘virtual’ archivistic reconstruction, bringing together in a chronological series what belongs together by content to make it easier for potential users. But it is only based on the inventory and not on an analysis of the documents. Except for a few items, it was not possible to verify the originals. Let this be clear to avoid misunderstandings. Using basically Denucé's wording, the text of the entries is partly in French, partly in Dutch. In the inventory only the introduction is bilingual, the entries are alternately in French and in Dutch, according to the original documents, or the first document of the bundle.Ga naar voetnoot7 To understand the family & economic archives better, it seemed opportune to add a genealogical table of the Plantin-Moretus dynasty with the related families whose archival documents came to the Plantin Archives. Once more to avoid misunderstandings, it must be stressed that this is of course nor a complete genealogy but only the line of the masters of the Officina and a selection of the sidelines in order to explain how certain archives came into the family's possession. With the renowned publishing and printing house, the family inherited from Plantin the care to keep documents of the business, not only expenses and incomes, estates and other belongings, but also schoolbooks and personal memorials.Ga naar voetnoot8
