‘Alardiana’ in the Bibliotheque Nationale

In continuation of the bibliography of Alardus Amstelredamus, published in Folium III, 1/2, I have pleasure in recording a few more ‘Alardiana’, which are to be found in the rich collection of humanist impressions contained in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. Though no surprising discoveries (e.g. unknown works by that writer) were made, I have succeeded in locating four variants and one reprint of editions already known, a description of which is given below. For completeness' sake I may mention that, apart from the items recorded below, the following numbers of my bibliography are in the possession of the library: 3, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 27-32, 33.

Entirely identical with No. 31, only with a different address and a typographically different title, as may be seen from the description given above.

Note: It is obvious that No. 31 (perhaps also No. 32, which only slightly differs) and the variants A-D are closely interrelated. In my opinion, it is not even a matter of different issues (in the text there are no typographical differences whatever), but one of the self-same edition to which only different titles have been added. It seems that the book was printed by a Parisian printer for five (or six, if we add the Lyons edition, No. 32, of the same year) different publishers at the same time. It would lead us too far if we were to investigate what were the relations between these publishers; as a matter of fact this problem is of no interest for the Alardus bibliography and such a form of publication was common enough. It is only interesting to note that whereas Arnold Angelier had his shop at the ‘second pillar of the Royal Palace’, Rignon, Regnault, Yuernel, and Gaultherot lived in the old Jewish quarter of Paris near or in the Rue Saint Jacques. Alard's ‘Similitudes’ seems to have been popular amongst contemporary Parisian booksellers!
