Nietzsche en ‘Philosopher Chips’

In de wijsbegeerte zoo min als in de poëzie heeft de afgetrokken gedachte waarde: in beide alleen de levende. Als Nietzsche leert dat na een zeker tijdperk al wat bestaat opnieuw zal zijn wat het tevoren geweest is, en zoo in gedurige wederkomst, - dan ligt de kracht van die gedachte niet in haar begrippelijke beteekenis, maar in het geloof waarmee Nietzsche haar uiting gaf. Dat hij, die van menschen en wereld in ziekelijke kuisheid walgde, dat hij, ondanks die afkeer, door een ingeboren levensdrang, als het ware boven zijn natuurlijke persoon uitgejaagd werd en in een voor hem tegen-natuurlijke extaze verklaren moest dat wat hem nu bezielde was ‘die Begierde alles noch einmal und ewige Male zu erleben’, dat was de ervaring waardoor hij zijn lichaam te gronde richtte en waardoor hij zoo velen heeft beheerscht. Dat die mensch die begeerte had, dat was het geweldige. De begeerte ging over in geloof dat het zijn zou zooals hij begeerde: het geloof moest in een leer worden uitgesproken. Maar zonder dit geloof zooals het ontstond uit de begeerte juist van dezen Nietzsche, heeft die leer noch waarde noch oorspronkelijkheid. Zij is dan namelijk niets anders dan de theorie van scheepstimmerman Muddle, zooals wij allen die, in onze jeugd, hebben gelezen in dat voortreffelijke boek, den Peter Simple van Captain Marryat.

‘The carpenter, whose name was Muddle, used to go by the appellation of Philosopher Chips, not that he followed any particular school, but had found a theory of his own, from which he was not to be dissuaded. This was, that the universe had its cycle of events turned round, so that in a certain period of time every thing was to happen over again. I never could make him explain upon what data his calculations were founded: he said, that if he explained it, I was too young to comprehend it; but the fact was this, ‘that in 27.672 years every thing that was going on now would be going on again, with the same people as were existing at this present time. He very seldom ventured to make the remark to Captain Savage, but to the first lieutenant he did very often. ‘I 've been as close to it

as possible, Sir, I do assure you, although you find fault; but 27.672 years ago you were first lieutenant of this ship, and I was carpenter, although we recollect nothing about it; and 27.672 years hence we shall both be standing by this boat, talking about the repairs as we are now.’

Marryat zag in de leer van Mr. Muddle niet enkel aanleiding tot schertsen. Aan het fatalisme dat erin besloten ligt schreef hij een sterkende kracht toe.

‘This theory made him very indifferent as to danger, or indeed as to anything. It was of no consequence, the affair took its station in the course of time. It happened at the above period and would happen again. Fate was fate’.

Ook komt hij er later op terug en schijnt haar dan als een modelstaal van bespiegelende wijsbegeerte te beschouwen, waar hij een staal van praktische wijsbegeerte tegenover stelt.

‘One day I was on the forecastle with Mr. Chucks, the boatswain, who was very kind to me. He had been showing me how to make the various knots and bends of rope, which are used in our service. I am afraid that I was very stupid, but he showed me over and over again, until I learnt how to make them. Amongst others, he taught me a fisherman's bend, which he pronounced to be the king of all knots; ‘and, Mr. Simple’, continued he, ‘there is a moral in that knot. You observe that when the parts are drawn the right way, and together, the more you pull the faster they hold, and the more impossible to untie them; but see by hauling them apart, how a little difference, a pull the other way, immediately disunites them, and then how easy they cast off in a moment. That points out the necessity of pulling together in this world, Mr. Simple, when we wish to hold on, and that's a piece of philosophy worth all the twenty six thousand and odd years of my friend the carpenter, which leads to nothing but a brown study, when he ought to be attending to his duty.’

‘Very true, Mr. Chucks, you are the better philosopher of the two.’

Ik weet niet of Professor Chips al eerder als voorlooper van Nietzsche gehuldigd werd. Mijn doel was alleen door een treffend voorbeeld duidelijk te maken hoe de kracht van dichter of wijsgeer niet in hun gedachten ligt, voor zoover men die als afgetrokkenheden beschouwen kan, maar alleen in het oorspronkelijke leven dat zij, in onderscheiding van alle andere menschen, door die gedachten uitdrukken.
