My dear Dr. Brinton,
I found your kind letter at the dutch consulate forwarded from San Francisco. On account of the very friendly feelings it expresses and in remembrance of the good time we had in your company I need not say it gave me much pleasure as my stay in San Francisco has been a very pleasant one since I had the ad-

vantage of meeting you.
On our way back we had a very interesting and comfortable journey by Canada, where, at our stay in Montreal we were invited by Sir William Van Horne to spend some time at his place in New Brunswick. I had much pleasure in painting the portrait of young Mrs. Van Horne to the satisfaction of Sir William who advised me, just in the same way as you did in San Francisco, to come back to America. If the german submarines do not interfere I think I will do it, and if so I certainly will let you know.

On our way home ward we arrived last night in N.Y. and are sailing the 21st of this month.
Hoping to see you again some day this winter with kindest regards form both of us,
sincerely yours
Wm Witsen.
