Marjorie Kellogg in Los Altos Hills

Op 17 november 1959 moest ik op contract voor W. Colston Leigh en Barbara Applegate The Morning Forum in Los Altos Hills, Californië toespreken. Marjorie Kellogg-van Rheeden was in het gehoor die dag. Haar man, Bill, had me opgehaald. Hij bleek een oorlogsheld gedecoreerd door Roosevelt, Churchill, Stalin en koningin Wilhelmina (militaire Willemsorde). De Kelloggs hadden na de oorlog in Den Haag gewoond, waar hij liaison officier voor shape in Brussel was. Sedertdien was hij verbonden aan de Lockheed fabrieken in Californië. Ze gaven een etentje voor me in hun heerlijke huis in de heuvels en we zaten die avond urenlang te praten bij een haardvuur. (Memoires 1959-1961, In den Toren, Baarn, 1988, p.p. 90-91). De Kellogg's werden vrienden voor het leven. Ik heb letterlijk tientallen malen bij hen gelogeerd. De laatste keer, dat ik hen bezocht was in 2001, een halfjaar voor de rampen van 11 September. schil over die lamentabele gebeurtenis zou tot een onherstelbare breuk leiden.

Gebaseerd op tientallen jaren wonen en werken in de vs heb ik nolens volens een afweermechanisme ontwikkeld om nooit of te nimmer ooit mededelingen door Amerikaanse presidenten - en hun medewerkers - over het misdadige gedrag van anderen voor zoete koek te slikken. Het is absoluut noodzakelijk gebleken om, voor men zich een mening vormt, de bewijzen van hun beweringen meer dan grondig te onderzoeken. Junior Bush beweerde zonder enige vorm van juridisch onderbouwde of feitelijk steekhoudende bewijzen - en vrijwel de hele wereld nam dit klakkeloos van hem aan - dat Osama bin Laden en Al Queda de boosdoeners waren geweest. Ik schreef uit verontwaardiging over het internationale papegaaien circuit een met feiten en bronnen onderbouwde brochure, Who are the no. 1 War Criminals?, en noemde de Amerikanen zelf gediplomeerde oorlogsmisdadigers aan de hand van het internationale gedrag van de vs volgend op de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het toezenden van dit vlugschrift aan de Kellogg's veroorzaakte na 42 jaar vriendschap een onherstelbare breuk. In 1993 zond Marjorie me reeds een bijdrage voor dit liber amicorum, welke ik in dierbare herinnering natuurlijk opneem.

Our friend Willem

When you begin with two cynics, mix in a modicum of controversy, a sufficient amount of compromise to avert an all-out war, stir in a referee to keep the mixture from boiling, spice the combination with visits, phone calls and letters, then temper the concoction with a lot of laughter, you have a recipe for the longtime friendship of Willem Oltmans, Bill Kellogg, and Marjorie Kellogg-van Rheeden.

It began some 34 years ago after Marjorie, Bill, and the 9 year old twins, Phyllis and Fred, moved to Los Altos Hills, following Bill's assignment at the shape Air Defense Technical Center in the Hague.

In 1959, Willem, billed as ‘The Flying Dutchman’, was on a lecture tour of the United States. The day he addressed the Los Altos Hills Forum, Marjorie, also from Dutch descent, was in the audience. Captivated by the spellbinder, she invited him to their home for dinner. He accepted. A friendship began.

Some time later, Marjorie became acquainted with the Los Altos Morning Forum board members and learned that after Willem had spoken they amended their constitution. Any male speaker thereafter was to have his fly checked before appearing on stage, because Willem had addressed the ladies with his open.

Bill was initially skeptical of the personable, opinionated newcomer. The two remarkably intelligent individuals are immediately pitted in verbal fencing that has not ceased through the years. But, a mutual respect developed, (Very true).

Willem's frequent correspondence and sporadic visits have kept Bill and Marjorie abreast of his travels, activities, trials, tribulations, and his associations with world figures who have made 20th century history.

During Willem's visits, Marjorie received candid criticism, plus invaluable encouragement for her painting, photography, and writing endeavors. First-hand observation of Willem's diary writing discipline was of immeasurable value. Daily he resolutely read leading newspapers, clipped pertinent articles, searched the bookstores, wrote his diary first thing in the morning, during the day, and the last thing at night, while he read, while he talked, while he watched television. His concentration was remarkable.

After many years of fond memories, Marjory and Bill are honored to salute their long-time special Dutch friend on his 70th birthday.
