Antwoord van de Verenigde Staten op Multatuli's circulaire d.d. 1 september. Groot vel papier met gedrukt kopje, aan éen zijde beschreven. (M.M.)

Naast het kopje staat de aantekening: Lands & Land Grant railroad.

De handtekening is grotendeels onleesbaar.

Sir,

Ik have received your letter of the 1^st instant, suggesting that railroads tickets might be made a source of revenue by letting the printing of them to the highest bidder, who would thus acquire the right to dispose of the reverse of the ticket for advertising purposes.

In reply I have to state, that the General Government of the United States has no such connection with or control over railroads in this country as to justify its interference in a matter of this kind. With thanks, therefore, for your suggestion, I must decline taking any action thereon.
