The composition of the Committee underwent considerable changes during the past years. A sadly great number of its members, alas, were borne away by death.
Professor Dr. G. van Rijnberk, who had been Chairman of the Committee right from the beginning, and whose signature still graces the Foreword to Vo. IV, died in 1953. With him, one of the strongest pillars of this publication has departed. To the very last of his rich, busy life our undertaking had a warm place in his heart.
In 1952 Professor Dr. W. Kouwenaar had taken over the derection from van Rijnberk as deputy chairman. On the 5th of September 1954 he was killed - one of the victims of the calamitous ‘Triton’ air crash at Shannon airport.
In January 1955 Professor Dr. A.J. Kluyver took up the chairman's gavel. He knew the work of the Committee, from top to bottom, having been a member of it since its formation, as well as having acted as its secretary-treasurer some time previously. He, too, was lost to us by his sudden death on May 14th 1954. The Royal Netherlands Academy of Science appointed Professor Dr. H.W. Julius - since 1954 a member of the Committee - as its Chairman.
Still this does not complete the sad list of losses. In 1953 Dr. D. Schoute died; in September 1956 Professor Dr. J. Boeke, who in the beginning had worked hard on behalf of the Committee.
The newly appointed members are: (Miss) Dr. Maria Rooseboom (1954), Professor Dr. R. Hooykaas (1954), and Professor Dr. J.R. Prakken (1955).
Mrs. M. van Eijsden née van Rijnberk, L.L.D., who was assistant secretary of the Leeuwenhoeck Committee from its foundation, resigned in 1957 on account of pressure of other work. Miss. Dr. A. Kleinhoonte (Delft) was found prepared to take over her function, at any rate for the time being, and has already taken an active share in the preparatory work for the present volume.
At the time of writing the only one who has joined in the Committee's work right from the start is our Editor-in-Chief, Dr. A. Schierbeek. At first as a member of the Committee; and entrusted since 1942 with the daily executive direction and the organization of the critical-scientific editing, he has put his personal stamp on a large part of the work, and his activity on behalf of our publication remains unbroken.
