Een paar dagen later bezoekt De Haan de gevangenis van Reading, (‘Reading-jail’, schrijft Van Eeden897.), waar Oscar Wilde luttele jaren voordien dwangarbeid verrichtte en inspiratie opdeed voor zijn gedicht The ballad of Reading Gaol. De Haan ging naar Reading niet alleen uit bewondering voor de dichter aan wie hij het laatste stuk van Pathologieën had opgedragen, maar ook als strafrechtdeskundige. Op dezelfde dag (het Engels poststempel is weer onleesbaar, het Brusselse dateert: 14 april 1912) schreef hij een briefkaart aan Eekhoud. |
