J'ai enfin terminé mon gros ouvrage sur les Libertins d'Anvers; il paraîtra en octobre à Paris et je me ferai en plaisir de vous l'offrir. - Je lis et relis longtemps avec beaucoup d'intérêt les revues et les tirés à part qui contiennent de vos vers ou de votre prose; les vers sur le petit Vacher de Claus sont exquis came aussi ceux que vous venez de dédies au peintre. J'aime beaucoup vos Liederen et surtout votre admirable poème sur la Mort de Pindare. Comptez, ces perles ne tarderont pas à être réunites en un écrin ou en un volume digne d'elles? Je me réjouie de vous voir en une si excellente voie. Vous devez vous porter à present aussi bien au physique qu'au moral? Ma femme se rappelle à votre cordial souvenir et moi je vous salue affectueusement des mains. G. Eekhoud.
‘Soms denk ik meer aan [...] Georges Eekhoud dan aan mij zelven’, aldus een (iets ingekorte) besliste volzin van De Haan889.. In elk geval lijkt het voor De Haan van groot belang geweest te zijn om zijn vriend in Brussel van zijn publikaties zo spoedig mogelijk op de hoogte te stellen. Wanneer zijn gedicht ‘Sophocles en de jonge slaaf’890. bij Albert Verwey berust, schrijft De Haan hem (op 17 april 1911): ‘Het gedicht van Sophocles zou ik wel gaarne zien in de afl[evering] van Juni of Juli. Ik wilde het namenlijk aan Georges Eekhoud geven, dien ik in Brussel zal ontmoeten op het einde van Juli of in 't begin van Augustus als 't vacantie is’. Maar hij ontmoette Eekhoud eerder. Op 27 mei schreef hij aan Verwey: ‘Gisteravond stoof ik naar Brussel voor een dag’. En op 29 mei noteerde Eekhoud ontroerd in zijn dagboek: ‘Yoop’ was op de 27ste 's ochtends vroeg komen binnenvallen en had hem gefeliciteerd met zijn verjaardag (Eekhoud werd op die dag zevenenvijftig). 's Avonds had De Haan, na een wandeling door de stad, bij Eekhoud thuis gegeten. De volgende middag had De Haan het echtpaar een etentje in Tervuren aangeboden en ook de tram betaald. Men bezocht het Koloniaal Museum aldaar en keerde daarna naar de stad terug891.. De Haan nam de trein van 5 uur naar Amsterdam. |
