'10.Beste Meester Eekhoud, u zult wel denken: die Joop schrijft ook niet dikwijls eenen brief. Dat is ook zoo. Maar die Joop heeft verschrikkelijk veel lessen tegenwoordig879.. En hij is voortdurend ongelukkig. Vergeef het hem dus. Hierbij zend ik u eene aflevering van Groot-Nederland met een gedicht op den Petit Vacher. Waarom heeft die photograaf mij toch nooit de foto gestuurd?880. Zooals u ziet nemen alle tijdschriften mijne Liederen gaarne. De Gids had er ook vier. Daarvan zal ik u een afdrukje zenden. Ik zou het heerlijk vinden, wanneer u eens naar Amsterdam komen zoudt. U kunt gemakkelijk mijn gast zijn. Dus: doe dat eens. Nu moet ik eindigen. Veel liefs van uwen vriend Joop
In 1910 publiceerde De Haan zijn laatste nerveuze vertelling881., ‘De lupuslijder’, in Ontwaking, dat toen, na een fusie, Ontwaking en Nieuw Leven heette882.. Uit die tijd kennen we een merkwaardige brief van De Haan, van 19 mei 1910, gericht aan een redakteur van Ontwaking, maar niet aan Georges Eekhoud en ook niet aan redakteur Segher Rabauw (want die wordt als ‘Waarde Makker’ aangeschreven883. en deze brief begint met ‘WelEdelGeb. Heer!’). ‘Geruimen tijd geleden zond ik u op uw verzoek eene bijdrage voor het tijdschrift Ontwaking’, aldus de brief. ‘Daar ik tot dusverre geen drukproef en geen enkel nummer van het tijdschrift heb ontvangen, denk ik, dat de uitgave van Ontwaking is gestaakt. Mocht dit het geval zijn, dan zou ik de novelle wel gaarne willen terughebben’. Het is eigenaardig dat De Haan zich niet tot Eekhoud (of Rabauw) wendde. Misschien dacht hij dat Eekhoud geen redakteur meer was. Wij sluiten 1910 af met de vermelding van een lang gedicht ‘Aan den heiligen Thomas van Aquino, Doctor Angelicus’884., door J. Greshoff gepubliceerd in Het jaar der dichters. Muzen-almanak voor 1911 (van 1910): ‘Geen morgen meer, dat ik niet trouw en sterk / Uw woorden lees’ en ‘Geen avond meer, dat ik niet welbewust / Uw boeken lees’ - er zijn formuleringen in dit gedicht die het vermoeden doen opkomen dat De Haan, zoals meer decadente letterkundigen, voor de bekoring van het katholieke geloof niet ongevoelig was. Tegelijk echter stond van hem in dezelfde ‘almanak’ een gedicht ‘Sabbath’885., vol heimwee naar de Sabbathviering in het ouderlijk huis (‘ik was toen kleiner dan mijne moeder’). En in een besliste volzin in De Amsterdammer van 16 januari 1910886. ziet men (dat is althans een interpretatie) hem juist afstand nemen tot ieder geloof: ‘Ik heb in mijn leven het Eeuwige met het Tijdelijke verwisseld’. Op een briefkaart van 11 mei 1911 uitte Eekhoud (nogmaals?) zijn bewondering voor het gedicht op het schilderij van Emile Claus. Verder reageerde hij op een gedicht ‘Aan Emile Claus’, dat enige dagen daarvoor in het weekblad De Samenleving van 6 mei 1911 verschenen was, en waarin de ‘herdersjongen’ c.q. ‘koewachter’ nog eens terugkeert887.. In het Eekhoud-archief ontbreekt een opdracht-exemplaar van Schetsboek, waarvan het voorwoord gedateerd is: voorjaar 1911 en de kopij in de zomer van 1910 zal zijn ingestuurd. De bundel bevat bijdragen van Nederlandse letterkundigen bij gelegenheid van het eerste lustrum van de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen. De Haan droeg Escal-Vigor bij, geïnspireerd op de gelijknamige roman van Eekhoud uit 1899, met een ‘Envoi’ die Meester Eekhoud dankt voor zijn steun ‘toen 't volk van Holland met dof gemor / als een zee vol wind en woelend gedruisch / tegen mijn woning opliep en ik vlood / uit Holland’. In Eekhouds bezit treft men wel het gedicht ‘Pindarus' dood’ aan, met een aantekening van De Haan: ‘Dit is de proef. Verschijnt in De Gids van Juni’ (1911). Eekhoud kende het gedicht dus, voordat het officieel verscheen en het publiek onder ogen kwam: iets waar De Haan een speciaal plezier in schiep888.. De Haans ‘Liederen’ en ‘Pindarus' dood’ las Eekhoud met liefde en bewondering. Zelf heeft hij dan zijn grote werk Les Libertins d'Anvers voltooid. Het zal in oktober in Parijs verschijnen, zegt hij. |
