De Haan aan Saalborn, 14 mei 1912Amsterdam, 14.5.'12.Geachte Heer Saalborn, ik kan niet zoo maar zonder meer uwe vriendelijkheid weer aanvaarden. Ik behoef niet te zeggen waarom. Toch wil ik ook niet volkomen met u breken. Ik vermoed, dat ge gaarne iets van mij verlangt: hulp of vertrouwelijkheid. Een van die dingen, die men niet zoo gemakkelijk uitzegt. Ik wil u gaarne in de gelegenheid stellen eens met mij te praten. Ik ben meer bezet dan ooit. Ik kan u voorstellen morgen: Woensdagavond 9½, dan eindig ik mijn lessen. U weet, wat u aan mij hebt bedorven en wat u dus aan mij hebt goed te maken. Ik laat oude vrienden en bekenden niet gaarne los; wil ook u gaarne ter wille zijn, maar moet toch grenzen stellen. Uw stukje in de P.C. las ik met zeer veel genoegen. Het was beter dan iets anders. Later wil ik nog wel eens wat verzen van u lezen. Inmiddels gaarne uw Jacob Israel de Haan Ik zou, als er gelegenheid is gaarne vooruit weten of u komt, daar ik anders zelf uit ga.
Het stukje in Propria Cures zou ‘De Droomen’ kunnen zijn, een verhaal dat op 11 mei 1912 in dat Amsterdamse studentenweekblad werd gepubliceerd. Deze brief, de laatste brief van De Haan aan Saalborn die ons bekend is824., werd door Saalborn in Brieven aan een jongen niet opgenomen. Na De Haans eerste reis naar Rusland zomer 1912 is er nog contact geweest met Arnold Saalborn. In De Witte Mier van 15 januari 1913 publiceerde Saalborn ‘Aanteekeningen over de jongste Russische letterkunde’, met name over toneelstukken van Eugen Ivanof. ‘De heer Jacob Israël de Haan, die op een reis in Rusland het gevangeniswezen aldaar onderzocht, heeft behalve veel andere Russen, ook Ivanof leeren kennen. Hij ontving de stukken van den schrijver ten geschenke en stond ze mij ter lezing af. Eugen Ivanof is ambtenaar aan de gevangenis te Moscou’ (p. 84; De Haan noemt hem E.P. Ivanoff, in een voetnoot op p. 1 van de oktoberaflevering van De Beweging 1912). Na verschijning van In Russische gevangenissen eind 1913 publiceerde De Haan nog enkele getuigenissen over het barre gevangenisregime, in De Beweging van december 1913 en van juni 1914. Ze werden vertaald door A. Saalborn, ‘beëedigd translateur’. Dat is Alexander Saalborn, een geboren Rus en de vader van Arnold. |
