Brieven van en aan Jacob Israël de Haan 1899-1908
(2018)–Jacob Israël de Haan– Auteursrechtelijk beschermd196. De Haan aan Verwey, 22 november 1908Amsterdam, 22 - 11 - '08.Zeer waarde Heer A. Verwey, in het begin van dezen maand schreef ik u eenen sterken, opgewekten brief. Ik was toen verheugd over het artikel van A. v.d. Leeuw in de Beweging en over mijn gedicht, genaamd Het Landhuis793.. Maar mijn sterke stemming is moedwillig gebroken. De nieuwe wethouder heeft mij op aanraden van den Katholieken schoolopziener J.F.M. Sterck als reserve-onderwijzer ontslagen. Niet op grond van mijn onderwijs, maar op grond van mijne geschriften. Ik kan nu aan geene enkele school meer benoemd worden. Ik heb dit aan ‘de Tijd’ te danken, die een niet groot aantal weken geleden schreef, dat men krankzinnigen in een gesticht zette en boeven in eene gevangenis en dat men dus mij ook niet met rust behoefde te laten. Ik vind het heel jammer. Ik was blij toen ik verleden jaar benoemd werd. Zonder geregeld werk word ik altijd melancholisch. Enfin. Ik lees en herlees de brieven, die ik nog van u heb. En ik lees uwe eenzame volzinnen, waarin ik veel troost vind. Meer in het bijzonder die welke handelen over de hatende reactie der menschen tegen iedere wijze van zijn, die anders dan de hunne is794.. Ik vind dat mooie en belangrijke zinnen en ik hoop niet te verzuimen op hunne belangvolle schoonheid te wijzen in het academisch proefschrift, dat ik mij voorstel te maken. Met mijn doctoraal schiet 't goed op. Daarvan laat ik mij niet terughouden. Zoo hier en daar beleven mijne kleine geschriften een niet groot succes, maar toch succes. Ik geloof, dat het met Giza Ritschl niet goed kan gaan. Waar men ziet, ziet men ellende. Het is jammer, dat niet iedereen aan zijn eigen ellende genoeg heeft, maar zich ook wil bemoeien met die van anderen. Ach: het leven is la Mort met frases795.. En als alle frases maar zoo vriendelijk waren als de uwe. Geloof, dat ik u zeer waardeer, en dat ik gaarne met vriendlijken groeten ben uw zeer dienstvaardige Jacob Israël de Haan
Op 26 november 1908 stuurden Burgemeester en Wethouders van Amsterdam aan De Haan de officiële mededeling van wat wij tegenwoordig als Berufsverbot zouden aanduiden. Onder het concept dat bewaard is gebleven, vinden we (zoals steeds onder die conceptbrieven) parafen, die wij niet steeds thuis kunnen brengen. Hier parafeerden o.a. de secretaris J.A. Baëza en de burgemeester van Amsterdam, W.F. van Leeuwen. |
