Na Eekhouds voorrede signaleert de NRC ook een artikel van René de With over de dichter Paul Verlaine in dezelfde aflevering van Den Gulden Winckel zonder te vermoeden, althans zonder te vermelden dat zich achter die schuilnaam, die iets heeft zowel van Richell als van Johan van Vere, de schrijver van Pathologieën verbergt. Verlaine was al jaren lang De Haans ‘diep-innigst-beminde verzenvriend’, zoals hij op 18
oktober 1903 in De Amsterdammer had geschreven. In het artikel in Den Gulden Winckel, een bespreking van een boek van Edmond Lepelletier over Verlaine, heet het: ‘Ik houd verbazend veel van dichters, en heel veel van Paul Verlaine, die een buitengewone is geweest. Daarom lees ik altijd van alles, wat over Verlaine geschreven wordt, en het geheele bovengenoemde boek van Lepelletier, dat zeer uitgewerkt is, heb ik gelezen’.
