Wat is het toch, dat mij zoo doet verlangen naar eene plaats in uw tijdschrift, terwijl ik in andere tijdschriften toch genoeg plaats vinden kan? Is uwe weinige of niet voldoende waardeering van mijn werk, mijn slecht geweten? Ik las daarover bij De Gourmont dit zinnetje: (Epilogues, dialogues des amateurs bldz. 71.658.) ‘le silence des gens de goût sert de conscience aux mauvais écrivains et les tourmente le reste de leur vie’ Nu, ik mag u later een vreemd gedicht zenden. In de maand december van 1907 verschenen drie reeksen besliste volzinnen in De Amsterdammer. Het is hier niet de plaats om dieper op dit deel van De Haans werk in te gaan. Wel merken wij op, hoezeer De Haans volzinnen zich onderscheiden van Bollands ‘Spreuken’ in De Nederlandsche Spectator in 1907 en van Verwey's ‘Eenzame volzinnen’, sinds 1904 gepubliceerd in De XXe Eeuw en in De Beweging, waarmee De Haans werk oppervlakkig gezien gelijkenis vertoont659.. Wij kozen een paar besliste volzinnen van De Haan uit - over zijn eigen leven: ‘Ik ben bang voor mijn verleden, want dat kan ik niet vergeten. Ik ben bang voor de toekomst, want die kan ik niet vermijden. Dus ik leef in het heden als een koorddanser op eene draad. Daar komt een doodval van’ (De Amsterdammer, 10 november) en: ‘Dagen en nachten zijn afschuwelijke dingen. Maar oogenblikken zijn soms prachtig’ (15 december); over het socialisme: ‘Het socialisme is geen gevaar voor de toekomst, maar de toekomst is een gevaar voor het socialisme’ (1 december); over reacties op zijn werk (en men kan daarbij aan Van Eeden denken of aan Verwey): ‘Ik ken eenen man, die mijn letterkundig kunstwerk niet aanvaarden wil, en dien ik vereer om dien wil zelve’ (10 november); over waarheden en scheurkalenders (waarbij men aan de scheurkalender met uitspraken van Van Eeden kan denken660.): ‘Het treurigste einde van eene waarheid is, dat zij als spreuk komt op eene familie-scheurkalender’ (1 december); een uitspraak over zijn werk en de zedelijke verontwaardiging van sommige lezers: ‘Er zijn geene onzedelijke schrijvers, maar wel onzedelijke lezers’ (8 december); een poëticale uitspraak: ‘De natuur is niet kunstvol, en de kunst is niet natuurlijk. Kunst is precies kunst voor zooverre zij geen natuur is’ (10 november); een decadente uitspraak die aan Oscar Wilde herinnert: ‘Niets is in mijn leven noodiger dan het overbodige’ (10 november)661.. In het decembernummer van De Nieuwe Gids (p. 108/11) verschenen vier fijne fragmenten. In het derde, ‘Engelsch aardewerk’, is sprake van een waterkan en twee drinkbekers met kippen erop afgebeeld. ‘Omdat ik dit steengoed meestal gebruik met eenen mij bevrienden jongen te samen, vind ik het fraaier en meer bijzonder dan ik het anders vinden zou’. Hij spreekt dan van ‘de kippenkan en de kippenbekers. Nergens drink ik zulk heerlijk water uit’. Opmerkelijk is dat in de roman Pathologieën, in het vierde hoofdstuk van het tweede deel, René zulk Engels steengoed aan mevrouw Riemersma schenkt, de oude vrouw bij wie René en Johan beiden wonen. Ook de oude vrouw spreekt dan van kippekan en kippebekers. |
