In april 1907 had Albert Verwey in De Beweging een stuk geschreven, getiteld: ‘Wat wil “De Beweging”?’. Hij trok daarin een parallel met de Revue des Idées (van Remy de Gourmont) en met Die Blätter für die Kunst en noemde De Beweging een blad van poëtische bezieling, ‘de dichterlijke drift die onzen tijd onmiskenbaar doorgolft’. In Den Gulden Winckel werd, ook nog in april, met dit stuk nogal de draak gestoken: ‘Albert Verwey zet nog weer eens uiteen wat De Beweging wil. Het bestaansrecht van dit tijdschrift schijnt wel erg précair, dat de redactie telkens zooveel woorden nodig heeft om het doel dat zij zich stelt haar lezers duidelijk te maken’. Toch ging voor De Haan van De Beweging een zekere aantrekkingskracht uit: ‘Wat is het toch, dat mij zoo doet verlangen naar eene plaats in uw tijdschrift, terwijl ik in andere tijdschriften toch genoeg plaats vinden kan?’. Maurits Uyldert citeert deze woorden en zegt: ‘Het was één stem uit velen, die zouden opklinken van jaar tot jaar’657.. |
