In 1905 had De Haan de Vereeniging van Letterkundigen tot aktie gemaand tegen burgemeesters die de opvoering van Heijermans' Allerzielen wilden verbieden607.. In de Tweede Kamer namen eind 1906 de sociaaldemokratische kamerleden Schaper en Tak stelling tegen de bevoegdheid van de burgemeester om toneelvoorstellingen te verbieden ‘die hij in strijd acht met de openbare orde of zedelijkheid’. Het katholieke kamerlid W.C.J. Passtoors vond het juist terecht, dat een burgemeester naar een gekwetste bevolkingsgroep luisterde en op grond daarvan een opvoering verbood. Tak verwierp censuur: geen preventief verbod maar toetsing achteraf (verslag van de zitting van 8 december 1906608.). Het herinnerde De Haan aan de dagen dat hij Tak en Het Volk bevocht om het niet recenseren van Pijpelijntjes en de geweigerde advertentie daarvoor. Toen, in april 1905, moest Schaper zich in de Kamer in bochten wringen om dit staaltje censuur goed te praten. De Haan had in 1905 zijn zaak uiteengezet in de Open brief aan P.L. Tak en stuurde nu een exemplaar naar Passtoors. Hoofdredacteur P.J.M. Aalberse bracht in het Katholiek Sociaal Weekblad van 6 april 1907 de rol van deze niet bij name genoemde informant in de publiciteit. De SDAP was er trots op, dat op het laatste partijcongres de eenheid was hersteld. Aalberse geloofde daar niet in: ‘zijn de Heeren er zoo zeker van, dat thans niet meer gebeuren zal, wat nog voor enkele maanden gebeurd is: dat een Katholiek Kamerlid ongevraagd van een sociaal democraat het materiaal ontving, om Tak in de Kamer te beantwoorden?’. Het Volk van 8 april 1907 antwoordde Aalberse: ‘gij liegt’. Aalberse nam dit voorval op in een lange lijst leugens waarvan hij de SDAP betichtte; het artikel ‘Wie liegt?’ uit het Katholiek Sociaal Weekblad van 20 april 1907 werd als overdruk in 89.000 exemplaren verspreid. W.H. Vliegen, hoofdredacteur van Het Volk, nam contact op met De Haan om zijn vermoeden dat die de bron was te verifiëren. |
