Verwey, dit is het vreemde verhaal, waarover ik U schreef, dat het in eenen kant en klaar als eene hallucinatie in mijn geest heeft gestaan. Het is niet zoo gruwbaar van toon, als het eerst leek. Ik ben wat versuft en dus mak geworden. Als u 't in uw tijdschrift wilt plaatsen zult U mij een genoegen doen. Maar is dit een onzedelijk geschrift? Wat is er de beteekenis van voor mijn leven. Het vreemde is, dat ik zulke verhalen, die mijn aard en aanleg toch eigenlijk vreemd zijn, telkens hoor. Prettig is anders, maar ik laat alles gaan. Op 't oogenblik ben ik te Nijmegen. Het is alles wel moeilijk, mijn briefadres is te Amsterdam. Wanneer ik wilde schipperen met mijne kunst, dan zouden tijdschriften wel mijn werk willen plaatsen, maar dat kan ik niet. Ik wilde, dat ik zelf maar een tijdschrift had, voor mijne beweging heb ik daar behoefte aan. Van Deyssel zou mijn nieuwe roman in zijn tijdschrift plaatsen, maar ik gloof, dat het een hard hoofd moet zijn, dat het beleeft. Nochtans: ik heb geen enkele van mijne vrijheden opgeofferd voor wat weelde en gemak. Op 't oogenblik heb ik een vrij ruim en redelijk bestaan. Ik werk veel, heel veel, van den morgen tot den avond. Maar studie is duur, en ook voor anderen behoor ik iets te doen. Prettig, dat U weer eene bijdrage van Nine v.d. Schaaf hebt536.. Giza zond aan Thijm een vers over Rembrandt537.. Ik voelde het als maakwerk, slecht, onecht. Bewijzen kon ik dat niet, maar misschien voelt U het ook anders. Andere verzen, die 'k van Giza las, waren heel mooi. Ze bezocht ons te Amsterdam, vóór zij naar Hongarije gaat, zal ik nog eens naar Bloemendaal zien te komen. Dit is alles, mijnheer Verwey, wat ik wil: mijne individualiteit handhaven. Maar het valt zwaar, van dag tot dag, en uur tot uur. Kunt U mijne aanteekeningen bij Jelgersma's geschrift538. plaatsen? Ik had ze den heer De Koo kunnen zenden, maar die heeft nog aanteekeningen bij Scipio Sighele van mij539.. Ik vind J. volstrekt onvoldoende, en niet in staat de grootte van Bolland te begrijpen. Ik moet nu weer les geven. Zeven uur per dag. Maar als 'k mijn litteraire werk maar kan blijven doen, dan wil 'k leven. Ik heb geen eer en geen roem van noode. Het ga u altijd wel. Op 21 oktober 1906 schreef Frank van der Goes in De Amsterdammer een uitvoerig opstel, ‘Harde maatregelen’, over de problemen in het diamantvak. Hij zag in het ‘overvoerd’ raken van de ‘arbeidsmarkt’ een groot gevaar voor ‘deze nijverheid’, de levensstandaard zou ‘ontzaggelijk’ onder druk komen te staan, lage lonen en werkeloosheid dreigden. De Haan had volgens hem geen begrip voor de arbeidersklasse. ‘Het gevoel dat hem drijft is het burgerlijke rechtsgevoel’. |
