129. De Haan aan Van Eeden, tussen 14 en 23 september 1906

Beste vriend Van Eeden, het was geene onverschilligheid, dat ik je in zoo lange niet schreef. Nu meer dan ooit ben ik op je vriendschap gesteld. Ik win weer eenige vastheid in het leven, en ook weer wat vertrouwen. Gaat het je goed? Schrijf mij eens, wil je? Een brief van je is zoo prettig, en ik heb er niet genoeg.
In Nijmegen heb ik eene goede betrekking. Ik kom elken Vrijdagmiddag in Amsterdam tot Maandagmorgen. Verder woon ik in het instituut. Ik werk ook voor mijn doctoraal. In deze krant staat een antwoord van den heer Polak op mijn stuk in De Groene Ik repliceer nu nog kort, en dan uit. Inderdaad is de S.D.A.P. een moreel gevaar. Ik heb het nooit van je geleerd, omdat ik 't niet leeren kon, dat is niet leeren wou.
Kom je nooit in Nijmegen? De dagen dat ik er ben? Of ik eens op Walden zal komen?

Henri Polak reageerde op De Haans repliek in het Weekblad van de ANDB van 28 september: ‘Een antwoord - en nog wat’. De Haan had volgens hem ‘een toon van domme verwatenheid’ aangeslagen. Voor de verhouding tussen de diamantbewerkers en andere arbeiders vond Polak een mooie vergelijking: ‘Als drie menschen te water vallen, moet dan de eene, die zwemmen kan, zich laten zinken, omdat de beide anderen, die niet zwemmen kunnen, het hoofd niet boven water kunnen houden?’. En De Haans beschuldiging van onzedelijkheid meende hij gemakkelijk te kunnen pareren: ‘De heer De Haan was eens heel boos, toen men een boek van hem als onzedelijk karakteriseerde. Maar dat belet hem niet, nu zelf den zedemeester uit te hangen’. De Haan zond Polaks stuk aan Van Eeden.
