(2018)–Jacob Israël de Haan– Auteursrechtelijk beschermd1904Over Giza Ritschl en haar werk werd uiteenlopend geoordeeld en op uiteenlopende wijze geschreven. In Den Gulden Winckel239. sloeg een criticus naar aanleiding van Giza's eersteling Verzen deze toon aan: ‘Uit de rijmregels van dit boekje murmelt een fontein van weedom, die in droomerigen stralenval neerdropt’; in Jong-Holland240. werd het werk geparodieerd: De Haans oordeel over de Nieuwe verzen, het boekje dat hij bijna op zijn verjaardag van de dichteres ten geschenke had gekregen, verscheen op 14 januari 1904 in Het Volk en het is aan dit ‘arbeidersdagblad’ aangepast. Eerst verwondert De Haan zich: ‘waarom kan Giza geen Hongaarsche verzen maken en zijn haar Hollandsche zoo simpel en zoo mooi?’ - zoals ook Henri Borel in zijn Opstellen van 1906 zijn verbazing uitspreekt ‘dat een Hongaarsche vrouw, Giza Ritschl, die in Holland kwam te wonen, pas door den invloed van de Hollandsche taal tot het bewustzijn kwam van haar dichter-zijn’ (p. 207); volgens een brief van Martha van Eeden aan Van Deyssel242. had ‘Mevrouw Giza Veth-Ritschl’, die zij ‘een zéér lieve, hartelijke vrouw’ noemt, ‘de hollandsche taal alléén geleerd uit jouw [Van Deyssels] werk en dat van Kloos’. De Haan stipt de kwestie terloops aan en vervolgt: ‘Ik zal hier niet een diepgaande verhandeling schrijven over zuivere poëzie en niet probeeren duidelijk te maken, waarom deze verzen zoo mooi zijn en die van Hélène Swarth zoo taalknoeierig en zoo gemaakt. In een arbeidersdagblad hooren zulke dingen niet thuis’. Waarom dan deze bundel toch aangekondigd en beoordeeld? ‘Hierom, omdat ik zoo heerlijk veel van de arbeiders houd en zoo graag wilde, dat hun veld van mooivinden zich ver zou uitstrekken voorbij de eigenlijke proletarische kunst’. Maar de criticus is pessimistisch: ‘Het boekje van vrouw Giza zal door de arbeiders niet gelezen worden. Velen zullen 't nooit hooren noemen. En toch zijn deze verzen juist door hun zuivere eenvoud voor voelende proletariërs zoo'n troostende en kostbare schat. Van een heel eenvoudige partijgenoote, een dienstmeisje, hoorde ik versjes, die van Giza Ritschl konden zijn. Het zelfde natuurlijke en de zelfde machtige en krachtige eenvoud’. Hij illustreert dan zijn ‘betoog’ met het gedicht ‘Speelt, muzikanten!’. In de derde regel, waar Giza schreef: ‘Stijgen moet mijn ziel, hoog in haat’, lezen we in Het Volk: ‘Stijgen moet mijn wil, hoog in haat’; de zetfout moet De Haan wel door de ziel zijn gegaan. Hij besluit zijn bespreking met de hoop ‘dat Giza Ritschl onder ons sociaaldemocraten nog om andere reden bekend zal zijn, dan om haar Hongaarsche poppen voor de kinderen van 't volk’. Een tweede kritiek op dezelfde bundel schreef De Haan voor De Vrouw, een ‘veertiendaagsch blad, gewijd aan de onderlinge opvoeding der vrouwen’. Het stuk verscheen op 13 februari 1904. Het opent met een beschouwing over poëzie en schoonheid, over de ‘taalprachtige en vormzuivere’ verzen van De Heredia, die mooi zijn, en verzen van Hélène Swarth, ‘nog prachtiger van taal en nog zuiverder van vorm’, die ‘gewoonweg leelijk zijn’: men ziet, de bekende bakens waar de criticus De Haan zich op oriënteert worden uitgezet. Simpele verzen hoeven niet mooi te zijn, maar zijn het soms wèl: ‘de versjes van Gisa Ritschl’ (er wordt consequent Gisa met een s gespeld). Dan betrekt De Haan het literatuurdebat van de actualiteit er bij: ‘Men spreekt en preekt over “Woordkunst” en “Wankunst” zonder te bedenken, dat in latere tijden de roerige zee van dezen litteratuurtijd wel veel kalmer gezien zal worden, als 't stormpje van persoonlijke boosheid maar eerst weer geluwd zal zijn’; het eerste opstel ‘Over Woordkunst’ van Van Eeden had in 1902 in de septemberaflevering van De XXe Eeuw gestaan, het tweede in het novembernummer, waarna Van Deyssel in de decemberaflevering een stuk ‘Over Wankunst’ publiceerde, dat de zelfoverschatting van Van Eeden en de geringe kwaliteit van zijn werk aan de kaak stelde. De Haan: ‘'t Is te hopen, dat noch Van Eeden, noch 'n andere booze litterator dit bundeltje gebruiken zal als een kneppel, om er een hoop hoenderen mee te smijten. Voor de vrienden van Gisa's eerste simpele verzenboekje, zal dit tweede een prettige vreugd zijn, en voor de linguisten in onze letterkunde een tweede verwondering, hoe een Hongaarsche zoo mooi Nederlandsch schrijft, met af en toe zoo'n fijn vreemdheidje erin’. Ook op regels die ‘dwaas’ zijn, gaat De Haan in, zoals op de ‘bepaald beruchte’ regels ‘tot mijn grooten spijt / is hij nooit op tijd’ (die door Van Hamel zelfs in het Frans vertaald werden). Aan de parodieën in Jong-Holland gaat hij glimlachend voorbij. Dan citeert hij een aantal verzen, waaronder weer ‘Speelt, muzikanten’, ditmaal zonder storende drukfout, en hij besluit met een waarschuwing: Giza is bewuster aan haar poëzie gaan werken, ‘ze weet, dat elk versje, dat ze maakt, gedrukt wordt’ en De Haan hoopt dat ze ‘nu maar sterk blijft, en toch vooral niets doet, om haar versjes 'n taalmooi te geven, dat hun zielmooi schaden zou’. Behalve de Nieuwe verzen van Giza Ritschl besprak De Haan in Het Volk een boek in afleveringen van J.P. Thijsse over vogels, op 21 april en 14 mei 1904; de bespreking van de volgende afleveringen werd voortgezet door Joh[an] V[orrink] op 2 augustus 1904. De Haan vraagt aandacht voor de economische kant van het boekenbedrijf: ‘Dit weeldeboek kost compleet f 7,20. En van de week schreef een Friesch partijgenoot-landarbeider mij, dat hij blij was, 90 cent per dag te verdienen. Acht dagen van hard zwoegwerk voor één mooi boek. Dat's bitter’ (21 april). In zijn kinderrubriek beperkte De Haan zich gewoonlijk tot eenvoudige zaken, verslagen van reisjes, raadsels (zoals dit op 27 december 1903: ‘Met oe lig ik voor 't huis / Met a maak ik gedruisch / Met i sta ik op ei en ij / En slordige kinderen letten niet op mij. / Wie ben ik?’); politiek weerde hij. In de correspondentie van 31 mei 1903 laat hij een inzender weten: ‘Je teekent lang niet kwaad. Maar alles wat maar een beetje op politiek lijkt kan ik stellig en beslist niet gebruiken’. En op 5 juli 1903 in dezelfde afdeling: ‘Je plaat is politiek, en daarom niet geschikt’. Dan evenwel, op 17 januari 1904, stelt De Haan zelf in de kinderrubriek een politiek probleem aan de orde: dienstweigering. Onder een portret van Tolstoj vertelt hij de kinderen hoe Tolstoj ‘om zijn haat tegen den oorlog’ bekend staat: ‘als hij soldaat moest worden, dan zou hij dat stellig weigeren’. In november 1903 had Jan Terwey (geboren in 1883) zich als dienstweigeraar bij de kazerne aangemeld: ‘Ik werd onweerstaanbaar tot een daad gedreven’243.. De jongeman, bewonderaar van Tolstoj, werd, zoals De Haan het uitdrukte, ‘zeer subiet in de doos gestopt’, te weten: het Huis van Bewaring te Haarlem. De Haan schreef: ‘Is die Jan nu slecht? Nee, dat heelemaal niet, ik zou b.v. wel willen, dat hij mijn vrind was, want stellig zou hij dan een trouw en betrouwbaar vrind zijn. Maar hij is dom. Hij wil de wereld dwingen in eens en dat gaat nu eenmaal niet’. En dan komt hij terug op Tolstoj: ‘Als graaf Tolstoi hoort, dat z'n jonge vrind [dienst] geweigerd heeft, zal hij zich stellig daarover verheugen’, een vermoeden dat door Tolstoj bewaarheid zou worden: op 27 juni 1904 schreef hij in The Times244. o.a. over Jan Terwey als behorende tot die mensen ‘die het Koninkrijk Gods in zichzelven verwezenlijken’. Intussen maakte Tolstoj's pacifisme, terwijl de Russisch-Japanse oorlog op uitbreken stond, geen schijn van kans. De Haan beëindigt zijn overweging in de kinderrubriek met de zin: ‘Graaf Leo is dom’. Het stuk trok de aandacht. Felix Ortt schreef in het orgaan der christen-anarchisten, Vrede, op 23 januari 1904 een artikel ‘De Pers over de zaak-Terwey’ en vond De Haans reactie typerend voor ‘de treurige manier waarop in de sociaal-democratische jeugd nobele opwellingen worden gefnuikt en de kinderen opgekweekt in een plat opportunisme’. In eigen, sociaal-democratische kring viel aan De Haans stukje een heel andere bejegening ten deel. Met zijn standpunt ten aanzien van Terwey en het verschijnsel dienstweigering was men het eens, maar men wierp een heel andere vraag op. De Haan had in de kinderrubriek een politiek probleem ter sprake gebracht. Mocht dat? De aanval kwam van de zijde van de Sociaal-Democratische Onderwijzersvereeniging. In 1900 toegetreden tot de SDAP speelde de SDOV daarin een actieve rol. Toch waren veel sociaal-democratische onderwijzers geen lid, onder meer uit weerzin tegen de strakke discipline binnen de SDOV. Dezen ‘moesten óf binnengehaald worden - maar dat lukte niet, omdat zij niets voor de discipline voelden - óf zij moesten verketterd worden. De laatstgenoemde mogelijkheid kreeg de overhand’245.. De SDOV wenste verplicht en neutraal staatsonderwijs en meende dat men dan op school noch geloofspunten noch politieke kwesties met de kinderen moest bespreken. Op uitnodiging van de redactie had J.C. Ceton als SDOV-woordvoerder in 1902 een uitgebreid opstel in De Nieuwe Tijd gepubliceerd, ‘Vrije School of verplichte Staatsschool’, waarin men leest: ‘Verre houde men van 't kinderverstand de onbegrijpelijke dogma's op kerkelik en staatkundig gebied’; ook uit de kinderliteratuur moesten socialistische propaganda en politieke thema's verdwijnen. Samengevat: ‘geef 't kind, wat des kinds is’. ‘De felheid waarmee deze principiële aanpak ter hand werd genomen’, aldus Sjoerd Karsten, bracht de SDOV ‘op tal van momenten in konflikt met personen en instituties binnen en buiten de sociaal-demokratie’; de felheid waarmee J.C. Ceton van twee kanten De Haan een dubbele volle laag gaf, maakt duidelijk dat hier iemand ‘verketterd’ werd. In het orgaan van de SDOV, De Volksonderwijzer, waarvan Ceton redacteur was, verscheen op 23 januari 1904 een redactioneel commentaar ‘Kinderlektuur’, met als motto: ‘Leo Tolstoi is dom, Jacob de Haan’. Hier volgt het: ‘Waartoe men komt, als men met kinderen ekonomiese of politieke vraagstukken wil behandelen, toont 't laatste Zondagsblad van Het Volk, waaraan wij bovenstaande uitspraak ontlenen, duidelik aan. 't Schijnt, dat onze gehele actie voor neutraal onderwijs en alle argumenten, die daarvoor door de onderwijzers op zo velerlei wijs en zo vele malen, gegeven zijn, de vaste medewerker aan 't Volk langs zijn kouwe kleren zijn afgezakt en hij nooit kennis genomen heeft van enige uitspraak op dit gebied van zijn kollega's partijgenoten of van de daarover in zijn vakbond gevoerde diskussies. Men geve 't kind, wat des kinds is en in geen geval dergelike kost te slikken, die onverteerd blijft. Een onderwijzer-partijgenoot-leider van een dergelike rubriek moest de eerste zijn, die dit inzag’. En in Het Volk van dezelfde datum vinden we een ingezonden brief van J.C. Ceton, onder dezelfde titel ‘Kinderlectuur’ en met hetzelfde motto. Was De Haan ‘lid onzer organisatie’ geweest, aldus Ceton, dan had men hem liever eerst binnenskamers getracht ‘tot andere inzichten te brengen’ (ziedaar de kwestie van de discipline). Nu gaat het maar openbaar: ‘Wat we meenen, dat moet nagelaten worden in deze rubriek, is 't daarin behandelen van economische of politieke vraagstukken. Ze liggen, op misschien heel enkele uitzonderingen na, buiten 't bevattingsvermogen van 't kind’. De redactie van Het Volk wordt uitgenodigd ‘haren medewerker te verzoeken, dit bij 't schrijven van kinderlectuur in 't oog te houden’. De redactie van Het Volk ging in een nawoord onmiddellijk door de knieën en beloofde de zaak ernstig te zullen overwegen. De Haan evenwel hield voet bij stuk. In een betoogje in Het Volk van 28 januari 1904 neemt hij pittig stelling. Bij het schrijven van zijn rubriek heeft hij, aldus het stukje, ‘Kinderlektuur’ geheten, ‘met eigenaardige moeilijkheden te doen, die 't best te vergelijken zijn met die van 'n onderwijzer, die in een klein lokaal zes klassen bergt’. De leeftijd van de kinderen varieert van zes tot zestien à zeventien jaar. De ‘zoozeer gewraakte Tolstoïtirade’ was een reactie op brieven van een paar ‘groote jongens’. De Haan schrijft er niet ‘maar zoo wild-weg op los’. In de rubriek behandelt hij nooit ‘ekonomische en politieke vraagstukken’, maar hij wil ‘'t recht houden zelf te beoordeelen wat voor de “kinderafdeeling” het beste past’. ‘Een soort van S.D.O.V.-censuur kan ik heusch niet aanvaarden’. In deze tijd moet Saalborn hem geschreven hebben. ‘De raadselredacteur Andriessen gaat [het Algemeen Handelsblad] verlaten, omdat de hoofdredacteur, die niet in correspondentie met de lezertjes is, beter wil weten dan hij, wat past en wat niet’ had De Haan op 28 januari in Het Volk geschreven. Het lijkt een zinspeling op een ontslag van De Haan zelf. Saalborn heeft hem toen kennelijk om informatie over Andriessen gevraagd. Het antwoord van De Haan dateren wij daarom op eind januari. De Haan knoopt aan bij recente gebeurtenissen uit 1903: het verblijf in Groningen op zijn reis om de Zuiderzee en de uitvoering door D.V.S. van de Gloriant en Het sonnet op een feestavond op 29 december (waarover Max Blokzijl, beginnend journalist, in het Algemeen Handelsblad van 30 december een prijzend stuk schreef246.). Een tweede uitvoering vond plaats op 28 februari 1904247.. Het ‘beloofde verjaarsboek’ was, volgens Saalborns mededeling248., De stille kracht van Louis Couperus, ‘in batik-band’, een boek dat f 4,90 in de winkel kostte: een kostbaar cadeau. ‘Onfatsoenlijk en luxueus, dat is te erg, hoor, samen!’ schreef Couperus zelf aan zijn uitgever Veen249.. Voorin schreef De Haan, aldus Saalborn250., woorden van Keats: ‘a thing of beauty is a joy for ever’. Een beoordeling van het fatsoensprobleem liet hij aan Saalborns moeder over. Het ‘opstel’ van Saalborn zou het ‘schetsje’ over zijn bezoek aan het Concertgebouw kunnen zijn, waaraan hij in november 1903 werkte. De Haans spreekbeurt in Bussum hebben wij niet gevonden, wel een paar lezingen in februari. |
