St Willibrordstraat.Beste baasje, ik had je vriendelijk briefje wel eerder beantwoord, maar ik had er geen tijd voor. En nu op 't moment ben ik ook niet thuis, en je briefje heb ik niet bij me, 't is wel mogelijk, dat ik iets vergeet, daar je over schreef. Maar ik geloof, dat uitstel afstel zou worden en 'n terugbriefje heb je wel verdiend. Nee, boy, 't zit met die arme kinderen zoo gemakkelijk niet als 'n jongen wel denkt. Lange tijden van minder goed leven hebben die echte werkmenschen tot 'n heel ander ras gemaakt. Ze verschillen in veel dingen van ons en 't is moeilijk gelijk-op met ze te voelen. Daar weet ik wel zoo 't een en ander van. Maar als de tijden beter zijn, zal dat ook wel beter worden. Maar ik weet te weinig van je af, om te weten, hoe ver 't met je kennis staat en of je me wel begrijpen kunt. Ik vind 't prettig, dat je zooveel van de natuur houdt, ja, dan is 't dubbel leuk er eens uit te zijn. Maar ik-zelf ga heel weinig uit. Heb je 'n prettige vacantie gehad? Heel de beste brave Caesar vergeten184.? Je gymtijd is wel prettig, maar ik denk, als je later eraf bent, dat je 'm dan nòg prettiger zult vinden dan 't wel was. Hoe gaat 't met je schilderende broer? Saam uit geweest. Ik zou wel graag eens 'n plaatje van hem hebben voor de krant. Ik heb wel vaste teekenaars, maar ik persoonlijk wil graag af en toe iets van kinderen hebben. Zou hij eens 'n plaatje willen maken. Maar met inkt of krijt en niet met potlood, dat is te duur om te reproduceeren. Vraag 't 'm maar eens en laat-ie maar eens wat sturen. Ik zend je vandaag eens 'n Zondagsblad, dan kun je eens 't een en ander van me lezen. Dat versje met dien haan eronder is ook van mij. Dat is nu m'n extra-mooie onderteekening en alle kinderen kennen hem. Af en toe krijg je dan de krant, als er wat goeds of grappigs instaat. Zeker, als je hulp noodig hebt, mag je bij me komen, dat is heelemaal geen voorrecht. Dat is gewoon, dat mag iedereen. En ik weet wel 'n beetje meer dan 'n gewoon gymnasiastje ook, want behalve A. heb ik ook acte als hoofdonderwijzer en voor fransch. Knap hè? ja ijselijk m'nheer. Maar alle gekheid op 'n stokje, ik wil je graag helpen. Maar thuis ben ik nooit, 's avonds na half zeven ben ik altijd bij Dr. Johanna van Maarseveen Nicolaas Witsenstraat 1 huis. Daar kun je dan komen als je me zien wilt. Het is daar familie van mij. Er wonen nog anderen ook in dat huis. Allemaal familie. Grappig wel, ik woon er niet, maar ik ben er veel. Eén keer richtte De Haan zijn brief aan de beide broertjes Saalborn tegelijk. Op het couvert staat: ‘M: Arnold en Louis Saalborn’, en het poststempel dateert de brief op 10 september 1903. Met het dramatisch gedicht, dat hij van plan was uit te geven, bedoelt De Haan het ‘Spel van verwoest Jeruzalem’. Wie er in de Nederland-redactie of -versie ‘zoo'n beetje de baas in gespeeld’ heeft, weten wij niet. Zeker niet redacteur Van Loghem, want die ‘bemoeit zich niet te veel met je verzen’, zal De Haan in brief nr 40 zeggen. Vergelijkt men de redactie in Nederland met het handschrift dat in het Letterkundig Museum in Den Haag bewaard wordt, dan ontmoet men een schier eindeloze reeks varianten. Paul Verlaine bezocht van 2 tot 14 november 1892 ons land en hield een aantal lezingen in Den Haag, Amsterdam en Leiden. Het jaar daarop publiceerde hij acht reisbrieven, die onder de titel Quinze jours en Hollande. Lettres à un ami gebundeld werden185.. In Vincent Haman van W.A. Paap wordt zijn bezoek in het voorlaatste hoofdstuk beschreven: ‘Die winter was er 'n franse dichter in de stad geweest. De man had de roep dat-i 'n viezik was. Maar daarom kan je poëzie toch wel mooi wezen, niet waar, of je 'n viezik bent?’. Wij citeren dit fragment, omdat er een mening over de verhouding tussen kunst en zedelijkheid in wordt geformuleerd, die op precies het omgekeerde neerkomt van de opvatting die De Haan in 1904 tijdens de Pijpelijntjes-affaire zal blijken te huldigen. |
