Maar de meeste menschen zouden haar wel mooi vinden. Dat is nou wel jammer, maar 't is zoo. Neen, ik heb mooiere dingen gehad, maar die vonden de meesten juist leelijk. Vindt u Sam Aletrino niet verschrikkelijk lief? Ik hou heel veel van hem. En dat moet geloof ik iedereen. Op 14 augustus 1903 schreef De Haan in Het Volk over een door De Telegraaf georganiseerde tentoonstelling van ‘kinderarbeid’ en speciaal over een jongetje dat hem daar was opgevallen: ‘Grappig dee 'n gymnasiastje bij een van de mooiste inzendingen, die daar zeer gestreng en waardig handsoff speelde en me allervriendelijkst over de tentoonstelling inlichtte’. Op 23 augustus komt hij in de kinderrubriek op dat gymnasiastje terug: ‘bij alle mooie inzendingen stonden van die oppassertjes. Een was 'n trouwelooze die liep bij zijn oppasserij vandaan om mij alles te laten zien’. Zo ontmoette De Haan de jonge Arnold Saalborn. In Saalborns herinnering had zich de eerste ontmoeting anders toegedragen. ‘Ergens in de Kalverstraat was een groot winkelpand, waar de Telegraaf een bijkantoor had. Daar repeteerden we een kinder-operette: Hansje in Modderstad’, aldus de inleiding van Saalborns Brieven aan een jongen (p. 11/2); ‘Jacob de Haan was verslaggever voor Het Volk en in die hoedanigheid kwam hij naar de kinderoperette kijken’. En daar, ‘op een van de repetities’, vond de kennismaking plaats. Saalborn bedoelt hier een ‘kinderzangspel in vier bedrijfjes’ van N. van der Linden van Snelrewaard-Boudewijns, getiteld Jantje in Modderstad, dat blijkens het voorwoord van oktober 1903 zijn première in Rotterdam en voorts ‘opvoeringen’ in Amsterdam beleefd heeft. ‘Ik weet niet meer’, aldus Saalborn, ‘welke rol ik daarin vervullen moest [...]. Maar Hansje werd gespeeld door een allerliefst meisje [...]. Ik moest haar uit een modderbad halen en met een enorme spons afspoelen. Op elke repetitie moest ik dat doen, terwijl er op de piano een wijsje werd gespeeld’. Heel duidelijk is dat niet. De titelheld, Jantje, kan natuurlijk door een meisje gespeeld zijn, maar Jantje is juist degene die de kinderen van Modderstad afsponst en niet zelf afgesponst wordt: ‘Onverwacht grijpt Jantje een der belhamels bij den schouder’, sponst hem af en zingt: ‘Jongen, spartel niet zoo tegen, / Want ik houd je vast ter dege!’. Omdat Saalborn zich niet herinnert bij dat wijsje op de piano iets gezongen te hebben en hij dus niet Jantje gespeeld kan hebben, komt voor hem eigenlijk alleen de rol van de Zeepman ‘die alles verkeerd begrijpt’ in aanmerking, een stomme rol. In september 1901 had Arnold Louis Bernard Saalborn, ‘natus d. 30 m. Novembris a. 1888’, zich ingeschreven in het ‘Album discipulorum’ van het Stedelijk Gymnasium, het latere Barlaeusgymnasium, te Amsterdam. In 1903 ging hij over naar de derde klas; De Haan ontmoette hem in de zomervakantie. Saalborn doorliep het gymnasium zonder ongelukken; alleen bij de overgang naar de vijfde klas, in 1905, kreeg hij een herexamen Grieks opgelegd. In 1907 ontving hij ‘het getuigschrift voor de faculteit der godgeleerdheid, der rechtsgeleerdheid of der letteren en wijsbegeerte’. In 1957 publiceerde Arnold Saalborn Brieven aan een jongen. Een kleine correspondentie van Jacob Israël de Haan, de editie van het merendeel van de aan hem gerichte brieven van De Haan in een speciaal arrangement183.. De handschriften worden in de Universiteitsbibliotheek van Leiden bewaard, evenals de oorspronkelijke couverts met poststempel, waarop men bij de datering van de brieven soms kan steunen. Tussen de brieven van De Haan aan Saalborn treft men brieven in klad van de jonge Saalborn aan, zodat we hier bij wijze van uitzondering, in zekere zin, soms met een briefwisseling te maken hebben. De eerste brief van De Haan aan Arnold Saalborn is het antwoord op een briefje van Saalborn aan hem. De ‘extra-mooie onderteekening’ waarvan De Haan spreekt en die op 17 mei 1903 haar première had beleefd, komen we in het Zondagsblad van 16 augustus en in dat van 6 september tegen; de brief zal dus kort na 6 september geschreven zijn. De school is weer begonnen; de zomervakantie ging eind juli in en duurde drie weken. Op het adres van Johanna van Maarseveen woonde inderdaad, zoals De Haan schrijft, nogal wat familie: haar zuster Geertruida Wilhelmina Petronella, getrouwd met Johannes Hendrikus Karel Docters van Leeuwen, haar zuster Wilhelmina Bertha Jeane, die op 20 april 1905 met Gerardus Cornelis Gerrits zou trouwen, haar zuster Johanna Belia Petronella, die in december 1904 naar haar echtgenoot Leo Bornhaupt in Riga vertrok, althans tot die datum op het adres in de Nicolaas Witsenstraat ingeschreven stond, en Petrus Franciscus van Maarseveen, een broer. Met Saalborns ‘schilderende broer’ wordt Louis Saalborn bedoeld, later bekend als schilder en acteur en schrijver van een roman De vader en de zoon (1934). In de vader in die roman, Sascha Waldmann, herkent men Alexander Saalborn, Rus van geboorte, acteur en regisseur en beëdigd vertaler. Hij hielp De Haan in de tijd van diens Russische engagement aan de vertaling van Russische brieven. Boven de brief staat een stempel: ‘Jacob de Haan’. |
