Het is zoo goed als ik, met uw kleinere gedichten voor me, niet had verwacht. Vinding en inrichting van het stuk vind ik uitstekend. De tooneelen zijn doorgaans levendig. De verzen zijn werkelijk verzen, geen jambisch proza, en sommige plaatsen zijn van verbeelding en zegging gelijkelijk mooi. Het zou, dunkt me, de moeite loonen later dit stuk te herzien. Sommige gerektheden en herhalingen konden dan worden weggewerkt, en een aantal onbeholpenheden en onrijpheden in de uitdrukking en de versificatie zouden kunnen verdwijnen. Het zal altijd een jong gewrocht blijven, geen drama waarin de karakters wat beteekenen of die in de behandeling een sterke hand verraadt, maar ge hebt reden er blij mee te zijn, omdat er werkelijk iets in is van het voornaamste: poëzie en kunst. Probeer maar weer eens iets, of, nog beter misschien, probeer niet maar wacht tot het komt. Binnenkort zal ik het terugzenden. Vriendelijk gegroet
Op of kort na vrijdag 26 juni 1903, de dag waarop Frank van der Goes tot één maand gevangenisstraf werd veroordeeld, beantwoordde De Haan de brief van Verwey. Het spreekt vanzelf dat hij de politieke actualiteit niet onvermeld liet: Verwey was tijdens het proces zelfs als getuige opgetreden. Het was in dat jaar van stakingen een slechte tijd ook voor niet-proletariërs die in woord en geschrift partij voor de stakers kozen. F.W.N. Hugenholtz, lid van de Tweede Kamer voor de SDAP, had, toen Kuyper de lichtingen 1900 en 1901 opriep, verklaard dat hij de militairen geen advies wilde geven, omdat hij dan in strijd kwam met de strafwet; hij werd beschuldigd van opruiing en kreeg een maand gevangenisstraf (er was een jaar geëist). En eenzelfde lot trof de marxistische theoreticus en oud-redacteur van De Nieuwe Gids Frank van der Goes. Frank of Franc van der Goes was in 1903 een man van naam zowel in de letteren als in de politiek. Op de HBS was hij leerling van Doorenbos geweest en medeleerling van Kloos; Jacques Perk was een jeugdvriend van hem. Zijn interesse voor toneel uitte zich in kritieken in De Amsterdammer, het blad van De Koo. Hij was secretaris van het comité ter viering van de eeuwfeesten van Breeroo en Hooft. Hij gaf les op de Toneelschool. In 1885 werkte hij mee aan de oprichting van De Nieuwe Gids, waarin hij ook als Ph. Hack van Outheusden over uiteenlopende onderwerpen schreef. In 1891 nam hij deel aan de geruchtmakende discussie in De Nieuwe Gids over ‘socialistische aesthetiek’, waarin hij recht tegenover Lodewijk van Deyssel kwam te staan. In die tijd immers had Van der Goes, van huis uit liberaal radicaal, zich tot sociaal-democraat ontwikkeld. In 1886 schreef hij een brochure Majesteitsschennis over de veroordeling van Domela Nieuwenhuis, in 1891 werd hij lid van diens Sociaal-Democratische Bond. Volgens een biografie in Het Volk, 26 april 1903, was de bemiddelde koopman Van der Goes ‘de Amsterdamsche koopmansbeurs uitgedrongen door de handlangers van het sjaggerend kapitaal’. In 1894 behoorde hij, als een der ‘twaalf apostelen’, tot de oprichters van de SDAP. Ook was hij redacteur van De Nieuwe Tijd, samen met Gorter, Saks en Henriëtte Roland Holst. Voorts zien wij hem in 1899 als privaatdocent in de staathuishoudkunde verbonden aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, waar overigens de belangstelling voor de colleges van deze meest vooraanstaande Marx-kenner van Nederland niet overstelpend groot geweest schijnt te zijn: regelmatig lezen we in zijn agenda (van 1905) dat zijn colleges niet doorgaan, ‘wegens onvoldoende opkomst’ of zelfs: ‘niemand op kollege’. Op 23 februari 1903 had Frank van der Goes in het gebouw Handwerkers Vriendenkring aan de Nieuwe Achtergracht te Amsterdam, op uitnodiging van de Bond van Miliciens en oud-Miliciens, tegen het oproepen van de lichtingen 1900 en 1901 door Abraham Kuyper geprotesteerd. De vergadering was openbaar, toegankelijk voor ieder die 10 cent entree betaalde. Onder het publiek van ‘honderden’ mensen, onder wie militairen en met name ‘eenige matrozen der Nederlandse Koninklijke Marine’ (Van der Goes zelf meende later er drie geteld te hebben), bevonden zich dus ook niet-militairen. Juist tot die niet-militairen had Van der Goes zich gericht, zoals hij later bezwoer, tot ‘de lezers der kourantenverslagen’, teneinde de publieke opinie te beïnvloeden. Zijn rede was niet voorbereid: hij verving de beide sprekers Troelstra en Mendels, die plotseling verhinderd waren. Daarom had hij geen uitgeschreven tekst voor zich liggen, maar sprak hij voor de vuist weg aan de hand van een paar snel ontworpen notities. Achteraf wist niemand wat hij precies gezegd had, er was geen stenografisch verslag, alleen (zoals Van der Goes zei) partijdige samenvattingen, waarop later de aanklacht werd gebaseerd. In zijn agenda vulde hij bij de 23ste februari in: ‘Gesproken Amsterdam Handwerkersvriendenkring Achtergracht “Bond van Milliciens & Oudmilliciens” / Later door justitie geïnkrimineerde woorden: “Zeggen niet: Schiet niet, maar schiet in de goede richting enz.” aangemerkt als: Opruiing tot eenig strafbaar feit’. De NRC van 24 februari versloeg zijn woorden als volgt: ‘Als den soldaten wordt geboden: schiet, zeggen wij [socialisten] niet: schiet niet - maar: schiet in de richting, waarin geschoten moet worden!’. Van der Goes protesteerde tegen dit verslag in een ingezonden stuk: het had niet in zijn bedoeling gelegen om een deel van het leger zich tegen bevelen te doen verzetten: ‘Veeleer is onze tactiek deze, gelijk uit mijne woorden overigens met eenigen goeden wil te lezen is, het leger als geheel, als staatsinstelling op onze hand te krijgen’. De redactie antwoordde: ‘Zeker zou het in hooge mate wenschelijk zijn, dat de heer van der Goes, als hij weer eens voor miliciens optreedt, aan dezen onmiddellijk de verduidelijking mededeelde van datgene, waartoe hij hen aanzet, en daarmede niet wachtte totdat de courantenverslagen uitkomen’ (26 februari). Volgens het vonnis dat later over Van der Goes werd uitgesproken, had hij gezegd: ‘Als den soldaat geboden wordt “schiet”, zeggen wij niet “schiet niet”, maar “schiet naar den kant waar of waarheen geschoten moet worden”’, en die woorden werden geïnterpreteerd als opruiing tot desertie, insubordinatie of enig ander ‘misdrijf, in de crimineele Wetboeken voor het Krijgsvolk te lande en te water strafbaar gesteld’. Op vrijdag 24 april 1903 verscheen Van der Goes voor de arrondissementsrechtbank te Amsterdam. Als advocaat trad mr. M. Mendels op, door Wibaut aan Van der Goes gerecommandeerd (zoals in de agenda op 30 maart 1903 is aangetekend) en verder had de verdachte zich voorzien van een uitgelezen schaar getuigen, ‘reputatiegetuigen’, zoals hij ze in zijn agenda (woensdag 22 april) noemt, onder wie: Albert Verwey, Lodewijk van Deyssel, Jan Veth, de hoogleraren G.A. van Hamel en M.W.F. Treub, P.L. Tak, J. de Koo en J.N. van Hall. Er was Van der Goes veel aan gelegen zich te zuiveren van de verdenking dat hij zijn bedoelingen achteraf ‘verbloemd’ zou hebben, alsof hij ‘een opruier’ geweest was in die vergadering en ‘in de rechtszaal een lafaard’. Hij voelde zich door die verdachtmaking meer gegriefd dan door de juridische gevolgen die zijn rede zou kunnen hebben. Juist op de adel van zijn karakter legden zijn getuigen dus alle nadruk. Tak verklaarde dat Van der Goes geen man van uitvluchten was, Van Hall kende hem als ‘een open en eerlijk man die er zich niet uitdraaien zal als er gevaar is’, Albert Verwey ‘acht Van der Goes volkomen eerlijk en rechtschapen’. Toen de president van de rechtbank, mr. G.W. baron Van Imhoff, zei dat Van der Goes misschien de neiging had ‘om de eenvoudigste dingen zoo ingewikkeld mogelijk voor te stellen’146., moet Verwey geantwoord hebben: ‘De beklaagde drukt zijn gedachten uit in beelden, die schijnen een tegenstelling te vormen met de gedachten zelf. De stijl van mijn vriend Van der Goes heeft de speciale bijzonderheid, dat 't den schrijver niet in de eerste plaats te doen is om zijn gedachte zoo te zeggen als ze is, maar zoo dat de wijze van uitdrukken voor beschaafde menschen bijzondere waarde heeft’. Aldus het verslag van het proces in Het Volk van 26 april 1903. Een handicap bij hun hulp aan Van der Goes was voor de literatoren natuurlijk de afwezigheid van een tekst. Er waren alleen de (tegenstrijdige) krantenverslagen. Toch baseerde Lodewijk van Deyssel zijn getuigenis op een ‘letterkundige ontleding [er staat: ontlediging] zijner toespraak’, alsof hij een literair essay, een letterkundig product voor zich had liggen. Zeker was de rede van Van der Goes onhandig en riskant geweest, aldus Van Deyssels betoog. In feite was er zelfs inderdaad van opruiing sprake, want zó werden Van der Goes' woorden door de eenvoudige toehoorders verstaan. Maar een letterkundige analyse toont ontwijfelbaar aan dat hij nooit de bedoeling kan hebben gehad om miliciens ‘tot ongehoorzaamheid aan de bevelen hunner officieren aan te zetten’. De oproep om in de juiste richting te schieten moet niet als een ‘dadelijke toeroeping’, maar als een ‘rhetorisch versiersel’ worden geïnterpreteerd. Volgens een mededeling van Van Deyssel in zijn Gedenkschriften (p. 206/7) is zijn gehoor ‘in een algemeene lachbui’ geschoten; zijn rede overlezend, gepubliceerd onder de naam ‘De onschuld van den socialist Van der Goes’ in De XXe Eeuw juni 1903, kunnen we slechts vermoeden welke passage die hilariteit uitlokte. In elk geval legde de getuigenis van een man die zich in De Nieuwe Gids zo ondubbelzinnig tegen het socialisme en tegen de denkbeelden van Van der Goes had uitgesproken maar het nu toch voor hem opnam, gewicht in de schaal. Van der Goes zelf verscheen in de rechtszaal met een ‘memorie van verdediging’, in mei 1903 gepubliceerd in De XXe Eeuw onder de titel ‘Revolutie en oproer. Verdedigingsrede op Vrijdag 24 April uitgesproken voor de Rechtbank te Amsterdam’. In feite heeft hij de rede niet uitgesproken, maar aan de rechter ter lezing overhandigd. Het stuk licht de doeleinden van het socialisme toe: vervanging van ‘de regeerende klasse’ door de arbeidersklasse en vervolgens ‘afschaffing van de klassenregeering’. Géén ‘dienstweigering in eenigen vorm’, wél eenheid tussen leger en proletariaat. Het leger moet trouw blijven aan de regering, ook als die ‘in de macht zal zijn van onze partij’. Van der Goes betwist de juiste weergave van zijn woorden in de krant, ook door de theoretische achtergrond uitvoerig uit de doeken te doen (hij kan heel lang van stof zijn): de discussie tussen Domela Nieuwenhuis en Wilhelm Liebknecht in 1891 op het arbeiderscongres in Brussel over dienstweigering en werkstaking, de beslissing op het congres van 1893 in Zürich, waar de sociaal-democratie koos tégen dienstweigering en tégen gewelddadige revolutie. Het openbaar ministerie, bij monde van mr. Bosch van Oud-Ameliswaard, eiste negen maanden gevangenisstraf. Het vonnis, uitgesproken op 8 mei 1903, luidt: vier maanden. Het Volk is zeer verontwaardigd: ‘Hoe wreed deze zorgvolle vader van zijne kinderen wordt weggescheurd’ (9 mei). Arnold Ising schreef op 5 mei 1903 aan Lodewijk van Deyssel147.: ‘Ik heb Goes na de gerechtszitting ontmoet. Hij was schor van zenuwachtigheid en zag er uit alsof hij juist uit de gevangenis ontslagen was. [...] Hij hoopte op vriendelijkheden van den Kerker-directeur, zoo als iemand die opgehangen wordt naar een ulevelletje zou verlangen’. Na het vonnis, op 12 mei, schrijft Ising: ‘Als [Van der Goes] in appel gaat heeft hij kans nog meer te krijgen [dan vier maanden] en gratie aan de Koningin vragen is onmogelijk tegenover zijn partij’. Maar er gebeurt het tegenovergestelde: het openbaar ministerie gaat in hoger beroep. Op vrijdag 26 juni 1903 vernietigde het Gerechtshof te Amsterdam het vonnis van 8 mei en veroordeelde Van der Goes tot één maand, dat is dertig dagen, gevangenisstraf. Het bericht van het vonnis ging als een lopend vuurtje door het land, althans door Amsterdam, als we De Haan mogen geloven. De Haan zelf bezat geen telefoon, de artsen Van Maarseveen en Aletrino wèl. De ‘kinderversjes’ van Verwey, waar De Haan voorts over schrijft, waren gepubliceerd in De Nieuwe Gids van april 1889. Aan het einde van de brief, bij de woorden ‘nu kan ik niet meer schrijven’, begint De Haans handschrift vervaarlijk te vervormen. Bij de omzetting van handschrift in gedrukte tekst gaat veel verloren. |
