De Haan aan Verwey, juli 1902Amsterdam Vrolikstraat 75''Mijnheer Albert Verwey, Van Eeden zei, dat u 't zoo gek vindt, dat ik Van Eedentje zeg. Maar ik vind 't niks erg. Daarom mag ik 't wel zeggen. Maar V.E. zei ook, dat u mij zooveel moois en goeds zoudt weten te zeggen van mijn niet goed-zijn van verzen. En dat u 't zeker wel goed zoudt vinden als ik eens bij u kom. Vindt Albert Verwey 't goed? Dan moet u 't eerst schrijven. Ik wil weten dat u 't goed vindt. Woensdag a.s. ben ik nog een dagje in Noordwijk. Is 't dan goed? Ik wist niet, dat u zooveel baby's hadt. Zeven vind ik erg veel. Van Eeden heeft gisteravend met 'n heele bende jongens gevochten. Want die gooiden mevrouw Van Vloten met een steen. En toen heeft V. Eedentje er zoo leukjes opgetimmerd, dat ik er lekker om lachen moest. Maar die jongens waren dom. Ze liepen weg. Maar allemaal een kant op. Dom hè. Toen kregen ze altemaal van heisa hopsa. 't Was zoo grappig. Toen ik V.E. weg had gebracht gingen ze mij slaan en gooien. Toen kreeg ik het erg benauwd. Want ik kon 't Hof v. Holland niet weervinden. Maar ze gooiden mis met een rotte kool en raak met twee harde bloembollen. Dat dee pijn. Maar ik heb 'n erg groot mes. Een echt uit Zweden. En daar waren ze bang voor. Toen kreeg ik 'n jongen beet. En die pakte ik bij z'n ooren. En toen zei ik, dat ik 'm aan 't mes zou rijgen als-i me niet naar 't Hof bracht. Dat dee-die toen. U ziet 't was 'n prettige belangrijke dag. En V.E. was niks bang voor al die jongens niet. Nu ga ik nog schrijven en werken. Dag menheer Verwey Vriendelijk gegroet van Jacob de Haan.
Op 25 september 1902 verhuisde De Haans huisbaas, Bloemendal, van de Vrolikstraat naar de Van Ostadestraat; De Haan verhuisde mee. Op hetzelfde adres woonde van 21 oktober tot 13 december 1902 ook zijn oude vriend Koo de Braal. In juli 1902 heeft De Haan, bij gelegenheid van een nieuwe keuring, kennisgemaakt met Sam Aletrino, gemeentearts, seksuoloog en criminoloog en privaatdocent in de criminele antropologie aan de universiteit van Amsterdam, auteur uit de kring der Tachtigers en bevriend met Van Eeden. In 1911 in een brief aan Herman Robbers herinnert Aletrino zich de kennismaking (waarbij hij zich flink in het aantal jaren vergist): ‘Een jaar of zes geleden, werd me door van Hamel, die nu dood is117., Jacob Israël de Haan toegezonden, voor wien hij zich interesseerde en die naar [e]en gemeente-betrekking wilde solliciteeren, met het verzoek of ik hem eens zou willen onderzoeken en zien of hij kans zou hebben om aangenomen te worden, omdat hij zoo raar was en deed. Het was mijn rubriek niet, dat onderzoek voor onderwijzers, maar heb het toch gedaan en vond hem wel wat “raar” en vreemd, maar ik voor mij vond geen bezwaar. Hij is toen door een ander gekeurd en is geweigerd’. |
