Summary
This book is divided in two main sections. In the first section (Chapter II) the development of the ideological and theoretical backgrounds of Nieuwe Kunst in general and of ‘The book as Nieuwe Kunst’ in particular have been outlined. Nieuwe Kunst may here be taken to mean the Dutch contribution to the international Art Nouveau. In the second section (Chapters III and IV) the influence of these principles on the designing of books in the 'nineties has been traced from specific examples. A distinction has been made between the decorations which concentrate on the contents of the book (Chapter III) and the design which concentrate on the material aspects of the book (Chapter IV). In the last section the ‘floral’ decoration of Nieuwe Kunst is also considered.
