Den Haag, 16 Juni 1744.

The Governor of Menin¹⁾ arrived here Sunday and yesterday he received order to give an exact relation of all that passed from day to day, from the moment Menin was invested, till he surrendered, and to remain at the Hague till further order. I beleive he will be not a little embarassé, for he has made a most pitifull defence. And I have no notion what he will be able to say for his justification. The French are now beseiging Ypres, where I beleive the Prince of Hesse Philipsthal will not let them off so cheap. For besides that he is a man of courage and resolution, there are several other officiers with him, who are known to be men of distinguish'd merit, and capable of giving him good advice.
