(Jack) has company with him that he likes, and seems well pleased with what he is about, tho' not at all at what he sees. I don't know where their winter quarters are to be. If my opinion was to be follow'd, they would be as far from home as possible, being absolutely for going on, and not doing things by halves. The same reasons we had last year and this, we have still and much finer game to play.
......Lord Stairs is to take leave this week, and to go over as soon as his yacht is arrived. He is a man of prodigious spirit for his age. I doubt whether there is anybody else in England that would make a better figure at the head of an army than he. And yet there must be one......
