Willem Bentinck aan de gravin van Portland.

Den Haag, 1 Mei 1739.

We have had here the old Prince of Hesse Homburg, the Prince of Aldenburg's¹⁾ brother. The States General at my requisition have given him the government of Tournay, and he came here to take his oath. He is a plain English country gentleman, or one of the old Germans of Caesar's time, an honest souldier that never told a lye, nor wronged anybody. He has served the two last wars under King William and the Duke of Marlbro', and at the end of every campaign went home just as rich as in the beginning. When one sees such old men and the beaux and petit maîtres in fashion at present, the latter turn one's stomach.
