Omtrent ‘Het verdriet van België’

Een criticus is lezer èn schrijver. Die tegenstrijdigheid verklaart zijn paradoxale positie. Wat een criticus bij het lezen van een boek door het hoofd gaat, mag even verward zijn als de indrukken van om het even welke lezer, toch is hij deze laatste uit hoofde van zijn schrijverschap een geordend betoog, een gefundeerde interpretatie en een gemotiveerd oordeel verschuldigd. Het definitieve van zulk een kritiek schrikt mij af, zeker waar het zo'n complex boek als Het verdriet van België van Hugo Claus betreft. Daarom wil ik graag mijn rol van alwetend schrijver voor die van geboeid lezer verwisselen. Wat volgt zijn heterogene notities bij een heterogene roman, fragmenten van een lectuur die nergens als totaliteit bestaat.
Het verdriet van België bestaat uit twee delen van samen bijna 800 bladzijden. Het eerste daarvan telt zowat 280 bladzijden, verdeeld over 27 genummerde en getitelde hoofdstukken. Het tweede heeft geen hoofdstukken meer, maar bestaat uit bijna 200 door wit van elkaar gescheiden fragmenten. De twee delen heten respectievelijk ‘Het verdriet’ en ‘Van België’. In het tweede deel vernemen we dat het eerste deel eigenlijk de autobiografie is van de hoofdfiguur, de jonge Louis Seynaeve. Overigens verschilt dit eerste deel stilistisch nauwelijks van het tweede deel, waarin de levensbeschrijving van Louis verdergezet wordt. Zo valt de fictie (de roman van Seynaeve) in de fictie (de roman van Claus) als fictie door de mand.
Tussen de ‘autobiografie’ van Louis Seynaeve en Claus' leven bestaan merkwaardige overeenkomsten. Beiden zijn geboren op 5 april 1928, beiden brengen hun lagere-schooltijd door in een nonnenpensionaat dat aan de Heilige Jozef is toegewijd. Hun vaders zijn allebei drukker en leveran- | |

cier van schoolbenodigdheden, hun grootvaders inspecteur van het katholiek lager onderwijs in West-Vlaanderen. Beide jongens verlaten de lagere school bij het uitbreken van de tweede wereldoorlog.
Uit de in Claus' bundel Natuurgetrouwer opgenomen bijdrage over zijn voorgeslacht komen we te weten dat zijn grootmoeder aan vaderskant haar heup brak en invalide werd; hetzelfde gebeurt met de ‘Bomama’ van Louis (102). Het verhaal over de mislukte vrijage van Tante Violet (200-202) correspondeert met wat Claus in zijn familiekroniek over zijn tante H., de corpulente zuster van zijn moeder, vertelt. De anekdote over Louis' opstel ‘Lente in de stad’, dat door de leraar Nederlands ten onrechte als plagiaat wordt beschouwd (384-386), is een herinnering die Claus zelf meer dan eens in verband met zijn eigen schooltijd heeft opgehaald. In zijn Claus-boek dateert Georges Wildemeersch dit opstel op 23 juni 1944 (later dan in de roman). Dat we Louis en Hugo inderdaad niet helemaal kunnen identificeren, blijkt nu uit de ontmoeting van beiden op de laatste bladzijden van het boek: een rendez-vous van Dichtung und Wahrheit in wat Claus lang als zijn ‘familieroman’ heeft aangekondigd.
Literatuurtheoretici twisten over het statuut van reële eigennamen in fictionele werken. Verwijzen zij naar de werkelijkheid of naar een verdichte werkelijkheid? Onze romancier maakt het zijn critici niet gemakkelijker, want hij gebruikt nu eens werkelijk bestaande plaatsnamen, zoals Gent, Idegem, Roeselare, Laarne, Veurne, Harelbeke, Schorisse, Moorsele, Hingene, dan weer vervormde, maar toch nog min of meer herkenbare Vlaamse toponiemen. Het pensionaat van Louis ligt in ‘Haarbeke’ (264) bij ‘Markegem’ (64); dat van Hugo bevond zich in Aalbeke bij Marke. Kortrijk wordt in de roman Walle genoemd (95), naar een straat in de stad. Het ‘Bastegem’ waar Louis' moeder vandaan komt, is het Astene waar de zeventienjarige Claus bij zijn grootmoeder ingewoond heeft. Zo zal ‘Hulle’ (255) wel Heule zijn, ‘Wakkegem’ (95) Wakke, en ‘Waffelgem’ (622) misschien Avelgem. Naast namen van historische personen zoals Churchill, Hitler en Ratti (paus Pius XI) komen er ook gefingeerde namen in het boek voor.
Sommige daarvan zijn op dezelfde wijze getransformeerd als de plaatsnamen. In de plastische kunstenaar Dolf Zeebroeck (500) herkennen wij

de eertijds bekende tekenaar Jos Speybroeck. Voor de auteur Marnix de Puydt (146) stond waarschijnlijk de toneelschrijver Willem Putman model, die na expressionistisch werk oppervlakkige komedies schreef en inspecteur was van de openbare bibliotheken (573). Een deel van het leesplezier kan bij oudere en ingewijde lezers bestaan in het oplossen van dergelijke raadsels. Verstoppertje spelen met de lezers? Spelen in elk geval.
Zoals er een ‘Greene-land’ bestaat, de idiosyncratische wereld van Graham Greene, is er ook een ‘Clausitanië’, het universum van Claus, een niet-Euclidische ruimte waarin de personages moeiteloos van het ene boek in het andere kunnen stappen. Er is de aantrekkende en afstotende moeder, met haar talloze plaatsvervangsters: grootmoeders, tantes, nonnen en minnaressen. Hier heet ze Constance, ‘de Bestendige, Onveranderlijke, Trouwe’ (369): bittere antifrase of onontwijkbare werkelijkheid? De kloosterzusters zijn dezelfde als die uit De hondsdagen, Dorothea van Male, Het teken van de hamster, De verzoeking: een van hen is onbereikbaar opgesloten in het slot; alleen een kleine jongen kan haar benaderen. Even ongenaakbaar is de verre geliefde op het kasteel: Madame Laura is niet alleen een dubbelgangster van Petrarca's geliefde, niet alleen een zuster van Beatrix (531, Dantes Beatrice), maar ook een tweede Lise van Werveke (Het lied van de moordenaar) en Sandra Hermedam (De verwondering). Er is de gehate vader en zijn substituten: de bewaker van het kasteel, Holst (Schramme in De verwondering), de priester Kei (Deedee in Omtrent Deedee). Er is vooral de zoon, de zoveelste metamorfose van Claus' Oedipus, op zoek naar het mysterie van de sekse, na de homofiel getinte jeugdvriendschap (Broeck in De hondsdagen, Vlieghe hier) geïnitieerd door de oudere vrouw. Bladzijde na bladzijde herkent men de oude motieven: de gele DKW uit De hondsdagen en De verwondering, de uitstaande oren van het hoofdpersonage (eveneens uit De verwondering), het bordeel Titanic (De hondsdagen en De verwondering). Claus als plagiator van het eigen werk.
Oedipus: onvermijdelijke mythe in elk Claus-boek. Ze wordt hier, zoals ook in vroeger werk, aangegeven met de stijlfiguur pars pro toto: blindheid. De lezer, zelf ziende blind, leest er vaak overheen. Louis is geobse- | |

deerd door het thema: een lelijke vrouw en een vrouw met één oog worden door hem op één lijn gesteld (9); ‘Papa(..) kneep zijn ogen halfdicht. Bijziende? Nee, zo keek Willem Tell, toen hij zijn kruisboog spande, naar zijn zoon onder de appelboom’ (17, de vader mag niet blind, niet gecastreerd zijn); Louis wil een van beide ogen missen (76); toch vraagt hij of hij ze niet moet uitsteken zoals zuster Gerolf (de gecastreerde moeder, 166). Geen wonder dat Louis zich in een verspreking de vader van het kind van zijn moeder noemt (189). De laatste alinea van het boek luidt: ‘We gaan zien. Wij gaan zien. Toch’. Vlak daarvoor zagen het hoofdpersonage en zijn alter ego een meeuw ‘die hinkte’ (zoals Oedipus). De slagzin van de waanzinnig geworden Nonkel Omer (690, 695, vgl. 711) spiegelt een mogelijke bevrijding van het Oedipus-complex voor.
‘Dondeyne had een van de zeven Verboden Boeken onder zijn schort verstopt en Louis meegelokt. Zij zaten onder de slingerplanten van de grot van Bernadette Soubirous’. De eerste alinea van Het verdriet van België verplaatst ons meteen in de christelijke sfeer van verbod, verleiding en zonde. De Index Librorum Prohibitorum verbood in de eerste plaats ketterse en immorele boeken. Geheel in de geest van hun tijd interpreteren de pensionaatleerlingen dit als politiek linkse en seksueel onoorbare boeken. De grot waar zij bij elkaar komen, is die van Onze Lieve Vrouw van Lourdes, van de Moeder, oord waar de wet van de Vader wordt overtreden. Claus interpreteert het christendom consequent psychoanalytisch. Louis draagt een scapulier van de Onbevlekte Ontvangenis (164) in hetzelfde Mariale blauw als de jurk van zijn moeder (82). De ‘heilige koe Marie’ (65) baart hem in een visioen het kind dat zijn moeder ter wereld moest brengen. Zelfs later nog, wanneer hij in feite ongelovig geworden is, zal Louis zich nog met Maria's zoon, Jezus Christus, vereenzelvigen, bijvoorbeeld wanneer hij een van de kruiswoorden ‘sitio’, ‘ik heb dorst’, roept (644).
In het pensionaat vormen de ‘Apostelen’ (Louis en zijn vrienden) een geheime vereniging met sterk autoritaire inslag. De opstandige Vlieghe wordt gestraft met een pseudo-verkrachting. In de middelbare school geven Louis en Vlieghe zich uit vrije wil op bij de NSJV, de Nationaal-Socialistische Jeugd Vlaanderen, waarin eenzelfde stalen tucht heerst.

Vlieghe zal zich castreren en zelfmoord plegen nadat hij bij een prostituee een geslachtsziekte heeft opgelopen. Dit alles ligt geheel in de lijn van de sociale psychoanalyse van Wilhelm Reich, die meende dat de autoritaire bewegingen hun voedingsbodem vonden in de seksuele onderdrukkingsmechanismen van een patriarchale, vrouwvijandige maatschappij. Deze topos in de ideologiekritiek van het fascisme verbindt hier, net zoals dat in De verwondering het geval was, de psychologische thematiek met een politieke.
Een oorlogsboek. Met op de achtergrond de basso continuo van de strijd-berichten, waartegen de onwaarschijnlijke verhalen van hen die aan het front geweest zijn en de eindeloze commentaren van hen die thuis gebleven zijn opklinken. Een oorlogsboek zonder heldendaden, zonder dode helden, zonder strijd haast, zonder honger, zonder tragiek en zonder grootsheid, een boek over een oorlog zoals een land van de middelmaat die verdient. Zelfs de collaboratie ontstaat niet uit grootse idealen, maar uit schaapachtige volgzucht, boerenslimheid, kleinburgerlijke handelszin, politiek onbewustzijn. Het verdriet van België.
Het realisme van Het verdriet van België is niet dat van de weerspiegeling dat de orthodoxe marxistische esthetiek dierbaar is. Het is het realisme van het citaat. Geen enkele andere Vlaamse roman (Walschap, Boon zijn namen die zich opdringen) registreert zo getrouw, zo genadeloos ook, de duizenden zegswijzen, dooddoeners, gemeenplaatsen van ons volk. Dit boek kon dan ook niet anders dan in dialect geschreven zijn. Een dialect dat leeft bij de gratie van dialogen waarin eigenlijk niet gecommuniceerd wordt, maar waarin het van ouds bekende, het verwachte aldoor herhaald wordt: de taal van de ideologie. ‘Gij zijt veel schoner in het echt’. ‘Dat zeggen ze allemaal’. ‘Ik meen het’. Wat is hier de waarheid? Het heeft geen belang: zolang het spreken maar doorgaat. Spreken van mannen in de cafés, spreken van vrouwen thuis, spreken van kinderen op school en op straat, spreken van nonnen en priesters, spreken van leraars en kunstenaars, gesprekken die beginnen, afbreken en weer doorgaan, olie die de maatschappij draaiend houdt.

De zin van dit alles? Louis is ernaar op zoek, en hij stuit zoals anderen op het onvermijdelijke vierkant van waarheid, geheim, leugen, fictie. Is de waarheid de seksualiteit? De nonnen verbergen ze onder lange zwarte kousen, Louis' moeder bedriegt zijn vader, hij schrijft een fictie over zijn liefde tot de moeder: een novelle over ene mevrouw Horforêt (Franse ‘vertaling’ van de familienaam van zijn moeder Bossuyt). Ligt de waarheid in de communicatie? Maar de enige communicatie in het pensionaat is slechts mogelijk in een geheim genootschap, en in een wereld waarin zijn vader en zijn grootvader er lustig op los fantaseren en waarin zelfs zijn moeder hem bedriegt ‘met Zusterachtige leugens en beloften’ (82) wordt liegen voor de kleine Louis een tweede natuur. Een gedroomde voorbereiding, zo blijkt achteraf, op een schrijversloopbaan, waarin de grote Louis het geheime verdriet dat hij met zich mee draagt tegelijk kan verbergen en openbaren.
Een auteur die voor verschillende soorten publiek tegelijk schrijft, is voor de uitgeverswereld een gegarandeerd succes. Na De aanslag van Harry Mulisch is Het verdriet van België een roman die je op diverse wijzen kan lezen: als oorlogsherinnering, psychologische roman, verkapte autobiografie, maatschappijkritische roman en als ‘tekst’. Die laatste leeswijze zal wel de minst beoefende zijn, de meest elitaire, zo men wil. Toch is ze niet de minst interessante, aangezien zo ook de ‘stijl’ - voor de meeste lezers waarschijnlijk niet meer dan een hinderlijke vertroebeling van het Verhaal - een bron van informatie en een deel van de boodschap wordt. De korte hoofdstukken, de torpedosnelle dialogen, de staccato-zinsbouw, alles jaagt de lezer vooruit door dit boek. Maar je kan de roman ook anders, trager lezen en dan als bij een palimpsest een andere tekst zien verschijnen. Een waarin met diverse vertelwijzen en vertelperspectieven geëxperimenteerd wordt, een waarin allusies en motieven belangrijker worden dan gebeurtenissen, een waarin zoals in een gedicht associaties en meerzinnigheden de densiteit vergroten. Lees je de tekst zo, dan merk je hoe listig de bewustzijnsroman die het eerste deel van het boek vormt ons een identificerende lezing opdringt, die zich automatisch verderzet wanneer wij in het tweede deel een onoverzienbare reeks uiteenlopende tekstfragmenten zullen moeten interpreteren. Daaronder zijn er dialogen, waarbij de aanwezigheid van Louis soms niet vermeld wordt, monologen zoals die van Violet (721), dagboekfragmenten, in versvorm gedrukte passages (608), innerlijke monologen zoals die van zuster Gerolf (478 e.v.), commentaren

op het oorlogsgebeuren, brieven, beschrijvingen (zoals de autopsie van Laura, 741) beschuldigingen, bekentenissen. Voer voor literatuurfanaten? Oók. Zoals wanneer in de verleidingsscène tussen Louis en Tante Nora - overigens voldoende populair om in de Nederlandse Playboy een plaatsje te vinden - plotseling uit Claus' toverhoed een zinspeling op Van Ostaijens Het konijn opduikt (589, het konijn, een vruchtbaarheidssymbool, is overigens een leitmotief). Of de talloze verwijzingen naar auteurs (van Karl May tot Stefan Zweig), en aanhalingen uit hun werken (de villa Kernamout is genoemd naar een dichtbundel van Johan Daisne, 621; M. Roelants Komen en gaan, 767; G. Gezelle die avond en die rooze, 731: G. Gossaert ‘en zei in 't za'el zich wendend’, 769; er zijn tientallen, wellicht honderden voorbeelden). Of zoals wanneer een heel fragment opgebouwd blijkt uit associaties op het woord Tijd en hints naar de Griekse tijdgod C(h)ronus: horloge, datum, tijd, chronometreren, seconden, Altijd en eeuwig en immer, klok, In mijn tijd, het opvreten van de eigen kinderen (505-510). De critici die Het verdriet van België een volksroman of heimatliteratuur willen noemen zijn gewaarschuwd.
De Meester houdt ervan zijn boeken met mythische allusies te larderen. In Het verdriet van België functioneert de Graallegende als zodanig. Ze lag in een boek als dit voor de hand, aangezien vandaaruit verbindingslijnen lopen naar het christendom met zijn ridders-voor-Christus-idealen, naar de Middeleeuwen, die in Vlaanderen nog niet voorbij zijn, naar het Keltische heidendom (595) met de Claus dierbare vegetatiemythen, en naar het Nazisme met zijn Wagner-verering. In plaats van twaalf graalridders kan Louis in zijn pensionaatsjaren slechts vier Apostelen rond zich scharen. Maar in de loop van het verhaal ontdekt men andere graalzoekers met significante namen: de leraar Evariste de Launay de Kerchove, bijgenaamd de Kei (Kei of Key is een van de ridders van de Tafelronde); de boer Iwein Liekens (de Yvain van Chrétien de Troyes); de bewaker van het kasteel van de Belle Dame sans Merci Laura (531), A. Holst (met een knipoog naar de keltofiel Adriaan Roland Holst). In mijn revisie-exemplaar van het boek staat op p. 512 de naam van het dorp Bastegem geschreven als Barregem, waarin we het ‘barre heim’ (The Waste Land van T.S. Eliot) van de Graallegende herkennen. Blijkbaar had Claus in een eerste versie Barregem geschreven, maar die verwijzing later te duidelijk gevonden. In dit barre land bevinden zich zowel het sprookjeskasteel van Madame Laura (de jonkvrouw, een heidense vorm van de in het ‘Slot’

opgesloten zuster Gerolf) als de graalburcht zelf, waarin, bewaakt door Jules de Timmerman (Jozef van Arimathea?), de Visserskoning verblijft in de gedaante van de gemaskerde (dus niet herkende) Konrad. De steen die voor de Graal moet doorgaan, is echter, typisch voor Claus' ontluisterende visie op de mythe, een versteend excrement.
Bezwaren. Die zijn er beslist. Ondanks alle kunst- en vliegwerk maakt dit boek toch een déjà-vu-indruk: Cyrille Offermans sprak in een recensie van De Groene zelfs van ‘recycling van alles wat Claus eerder heeft geschreven’. Is dit niet hetzelfde jongetje van de verhalen uit De zwarte keizer? Is die afrekening met het fascisme niet al in De verwondering vertoond? Begint dat oedipuscomplex niet langzamerhand zelfs de Clausfans te vervelen? En kan een romancier van formaat het zich veroorloven de wereld en de mensen altijd weer uit éénzelfde soort bewustzijn te bekijken? Ook aan het vertelperspectief hapert er wel eens wat. De jonge Louis van het eerste deel is een enerzijds te naïef en anderzijds te wereldwijs personage. Dat kun je desnoods nog excuseren door het zogenaamd auteurschap van de oudere Louis. Maar wat doe je dan met gelijksoortige fouten in het tweede deel? En met de stijlgelijkenissen tussen de roman van Louis en die van Claus? Eén daarvan, die ik nogal irriterend vind omdat het een stijltic is geworden, is het gebruik van het asyndeton: ‘De ogen weken uiteen, vestigden zich op Louis als op een volwassene’ (137); ‘Hij knoopte beslist zijn gulp weer dicht, kuchte als een non’ (665). De karaktertekening van Louis is niet vrij van inconsequenties: men kan zich moeilijk voorstellen dat het jongetje dat de meisjes nauwelijks durft aan te spreken (397), met zijn vader volwassen gesprekken voert over de ontrouw van zijn moeder (434). Louis moge dan geniale trekjes vertonen, al die dikke woorden die hij gebruikt, het Duits dat hij als bij mirakel machtig blijkt te zijn, het ‘rad-Amerikaans’ dat hij met zijn schamele schoolopleiding plots blijkt te spreken (634), tonen wat te veel indulgentie van de auteur voor zijn personage. De theologische uiteenzettingen die de leraar
Kei voor schooljongens van twaalf houdt, zijn absurd irreëel. Ook de monologen van Marnix de Puydt zijn in zo'n overdreven stadhuistaal gesteld, dat ze zelfs als karikaturen van literair gezwets totaal ongeloofwaardig zijn. Dergelijke inbreuken op het soort realisme dat andere passages wèl vertonen, verzwakken de totale indruk, en verminderen de politieke en sociale impact van het boek, omdat ze suggereren dat dit alles toch maar ‘literatuur’, fantasie is. En dan zijn er slordigheden: Louis kan in de

eerste klas van de humaniora moeilijk een huiswerk scheikunde hebben gemaakt, aangezien dat vak daar niet werd gegeven (318); een jezuïet op een Westvlaams college is gezien bepaalde kerkelijke verorderingen terzake een onmogelijkheid; onze grootste Vlaamse schrijver weet niet dat je woorden als ‘elektricien’ en ‘mecanicien’ zonder trema schrijft.
De Ensor op de stofwikkel van het boek waarschuwt de lezer dat deze roman geen foto is, maar een karikatuur, een groteske fantasmagorie waarin vorst, kerk en vaderland als carnavalsfiguren rondlopen, waarin personages het mombakkes van leugen en bedrog dragen, waarin dromen, nachtmerries, visioenen achter elke hoek gluren en plots als ectoplasmen, irreële uitstulpingen tevoorschijn springen. Het verdriet van België: een lachspiegel? Ja, maar dan een die niet minder onwaarschijnlijk is dan de werkelijkheid die België heet.
