ForumChristelijke theologie na AuschwitzZelden heeft in Nederland een boek over theologie zoveel publiciteit gekregen als Christelijke theologie na AuschwitzGa naar voetnoot1. Dag- en weekbladen, radio en televisie hebben van het verschijnen ervan melding gemaakt. Deze aandacht heeft theologisch en kerkelijk Nederland opgeschrikt: onrust én ergernis vanwege het feit dat Jansen het bewijs wil leveren dat er een samenhang bestaat tussen het theologisch en kerkelijk anti-judaïsme van het christendom en het racistisch en politiek antisemitisme van het ‘Derde Rijk’. De onrust en de ergernis zitten diep, omdat Jansen ons geen detailstudie heeft gepresenteerd over hetzij een periode hetzij een aspect van de geschiedenis van jodendom en christendom, maar ons confronteert met de gehele kerkgeschiedenis. Wie getroost of gesust zou willen worden door de ‘betere’ tijden van de kerk, vindt bij Jansen weinig of geen aanknopingspunten. De hele kerkgeschiedenis voor zover deze gerelateerd is aan het jodendom moet volgens hem beschouwd worden als de voorgeschiedenis van de ‘Endlösung des Judentums’. De overstelpende hoeveelheid feiten die Jansen ons voorhoudt, zijn beschamend. Wat in de loop van de kerkgeschiedenis de joden in Christus' naam is aangedaan zou voor een christen onvoorstelbaar moeten zijn. Onrecht, verdachtmaking, verguizing en ontkenning, het zijn even zovele typeringen van de chronique scandaleuse die je uit negentien eeuwen christendom kunt samenstellen. Wie met dit feitenmateriaal wordt geconfronteerd, zal zich realiseren hoeveel school en kerk in het (ook recente) verleden hebben verzwegen. Daarom is het goed en noodzakelijk dat het boek van Jansen alle aandacht krijgt. Aandacht heeft Christelijke theologie na Auschwitz ook gekregen in joodse kringen. Niet dat zoveel joden geïnformeerd moesten worden over beleid en praxis van de kerken ten aanzien van hun volk. De kerkgeschiedenis hebben de joden - met name in Europa - aan den lijve ondervonden. Belangrijk voor hen is het dat er binnen het christendom een historisch bewustzijn groeit om hieruit een proces te ontwikkelen voor het vaststellen van de schuld van de grootste massamoord van de geschiedenis, om vervolgens een programma te ontwikkelen voor een nieuwe theologie’Ga naar voetnoot2. coëxistentie en dialoog van joden en christenen is een dergelijk programma van essentiële betekenis. Het bovengenoemde is meer dan voldoende reden om het belang van hef boek van Hans Jansen te onderstrepen. Dit mag echter niet leiden tot een kritiekloze propaganda. Zonder ook maar iets te willen afdoen aan de schuld die de kerk met haar wandaden tegenover de joden op zich heeft geladen meen ik dat een kritische bespreking van Christelijke theologie na Auschwitz mogelijk moet zijn. Zo'n bespreking is zelfs noodzakelijk, wil een vernieuwing in de christelijke theologie en een gelijkwaardige dialoog tussen joden en christenen kans van slagen hebben. Een zakelijk oordeel over dit boek in zijn geheel is echter niet te geven. De reden hiervan is precies het feit dat Jansen ons confronteert met een hele kerkgeschiedenis in al zijn facetten. Wie zal zich in staat achten de overstelpende hoeveelheid materiaal vakkundig te beoordelen? Er is daarom geen andere mogelijkheid dan onderdelen van dit boek te toetsen op hun inhoudelijke betrouwbaarheid en historische objectiviteit. Door verschillenden is een dergelijke deel-kritiek ondernomen. Op enkele besprekingen moge hier ter illustratie worden gewezen. Ze betreffen belangrijke momenten in de kerkgeschiedenis en de wijze waarop deze door Jansen worden gepresenteerd. Wat betreft de geschiedenis van de oude kerk maakt R. Zuurmond ernstige bezwaren tegen de door Jansen gebruikte bronnen: ‘Een boek dat over de wortels van het antisemitisme gaat behoort toch die wortels zelf te onderzoeken en te noemen. Niets daarvan bij Jansen. Alinea na alinea worden theologen sprekend ingevoerd via anderen of - in tientallen gevallen - zelfs zonder enige vermelding van de plaats van herkomst. De keren dat ik ze kon terugvinden waren de citaten vaak uit hun verband gelicht en tendentieus weergegeven’Ga naar voetnoot3. Tot dezelfde conclusie komt P. Fransen wat betreft Thomas van Aquino. Hij stelt vast dat voor de behandeling van deze sleutelfiguur van de katholieke theologie geen research is ondernomen en dat Jansen niet meer dan een journalistieke presentatie geeft. Daarbij wordt slecht geciteerd en onvoldoende bronvermelding gegeven. Fransen twijfelt dan ook ondanks de bewogenheid van de schrijver aan de deugdelijkheid van diens bewijsvoeringGa naar voetnoot4. Over de wijze waarop Jansen de houding van Luther beschrijft zegt A. Spijkerboer het volgende: ‘Jansen beperkt zich tot het geven van citaten, waaruit blijkt hoe verschrikkelijk Luther tegen de joden te keer is gegaan. Hij laat telkens zien hoe de nazi's, en dan in het bijzonder natuurlijk Julius Streicher, citaten van de oude Luther gebruikt hebben. Jansen stelt niet de vraag of dit gebruik geen misbruik is. Maar dat is het wel: de nazi's hebben Luther gebruikt voor een zaak die de zijne niet was, en die de zijne ook nooit zou hebben kunnen zijn’Ga naar voetnoot5. Bij deze kritische geluiden voeg ik van mijn kant enkele opmerkingen die Jansens presentatie van de zestiende eeuwse Contrareformatie betreffen. Geen theoloog zal de invloed ontkennen die de Contrareformatie, gekristalliseerd in het Concilie van Trente, heeft gehad op de vier daarop volgende eeuwen katholieke kerkgeschiedenis en theologie. Dat de Contrareformatie voor de joods-christelijke betrekkingen van de laatste vier eeuwen eveneens van wezenlijke betekenis is geweest, blijkt reeds uit het feit dat een kerk, die zich | |

op het Tweede Vaticaans Concilie met moeite ontworstelde aan een tridentijnse theologie, tegelijkertijd en dan pas een wezenlijke ommekeer in haar verhouding tot het Jodendom formuleerde. Er is daarom alle reden om wat betreft de houding van de Romana ten aanzien van de joden bijzondere aandacht aan de Contrareformatie te besteden. Dit is in het boek van Jansen echter geenszins het geval. Wat betreft de pausen van de 16e eeuw is hij buitengewoon spaarzaam met zijn informatie. Zo wordt in enkele regels (p. 116) meer suggestief dan gedocumenteerd geschetst op welke wijzen de pausen tegen de hebreeuwse literatuur zijn opgetreden. Verbranden, verbieden en censureren van het joodse traditiegoed zijn echter zaken die met verwijzing naar standaardwerken in dezen dienen te worden gepresenteerd. Bovendien - en dat lijkt mij nog wezenlijker - dient men in een boek dat handelt over de wortels van het antisemitisme zich te bekommeren om de reden die ten grondslag ligt aan een bepaald optreden tegen de joden. Wat betreft het optreden tegen de hebreeuwse literatuur door de pausen van de Contrareformatie is het niet moeilijk de reden hiervoor aan te geven. Tot aan de Contrareformatie werden de joden in de kerkelijke Staat getolereerd, welke tolerantie door de pausen werd geëist met verwijzing naar de christelijke deugden van zachtmoedigheid en welwillendheid. Met de Contrareformatie breekt er echter een tijd aan van actieve bekeringspolitiek. Niet alleen het dulden van de joden maar alle pauselijke maatregelen die met betrekking tot hen worden genomen, hebben van nu af aan de bedoeling de joden tot het christelijk geloof te brengen. Deze doelstelling wordt dan ook met zoveel woorden door de Romeinse Inquisitie en door paus Julius III geformuleerd bij hun acties tegen de hebreeuwse literatuurGa naar voetnoot6. Het vragen naar het waarom kan achterwege blijven bij een chronique scandaleuse, niet echter bij geschiedschrijving wanneer deze tenminste beoogt latere generaties van het verleden te laten leren. De wandaden van de Contrareformatie zullen in de kerk van vandaag niet zo gauw meer worden herhaald. Wel is het echter de vraag of met het verlaten van de tridentijnse theologie de kerk ook haar bekeringsdrift heeft laten varenGa naar voetnoot7. Om deze kwestie gaat het, want dit is de angst ook van joden vandaag wanneer zij met christenen in gesprek gaan. Onvoldoende karakterisering van de Contrareformatie door Jansen heeft deze periode doen opgaan in het algemene tumult van het anti-judaïsme, zodat wij daaruit niets specifieks kunnen leren. Een genuanceerde presentatie van de Contrareformatie had ons kunnen wijzen op een belangrijk obstakel voor het joods-christelijke gesprek nl. de bekering, die vier eeuwen lang door de pausen is beoogd. Het niet formuleren van specifieke doelstellingen moet ons bovendien behoedzaam maken wat betreft de door Jansen gelegde of gesuggereerde verbanden in de geschiedenis. Overeenkomst van feiten, zoals b.v. een boekverbranding, is onvoldoende om causale verbanden te leggen. De ‘Endlösung des Judentums’ is in nazi-Duitsland zeker niet ondanks negentien eeuwen christendom uitgedacht. Maar de vraag in welke mate en op welke wijze het christendom ertoe heeft bijgedragen, | |

kan niet worden beantwoord zonder expliciet aandacht te besteden aan de doelstellingen die aan vergelijkbare uitspraken en feiten ten grondslag liggen. Hopelijk zal het boek van Jansen een aanleiding zijn om met name de kerken te bevragen op de doelstellingen die aan hun houding tegenover het Jodendom ten grondslag liggen.

ook op het kaft staat, met zijn 22 zitplaatsen beneden, zijn tot slaapruimte omgebouwde bovendek en - als ik goed geteld heb - 16 passagiers uitgerekend naar Praag moet, heeft ongetwijfeld met het ‘Gelesenem’ van doen. Praag is de stad van Der Golem, van Kafka en Josef K. (de jongen uit Ikke's school die over hypnotische gaven beschikt, heet niet zonder reden Jozef en de kort van gestalte, oud-jonge auteur van geëngageerde zowel als surrealistische poëzie die eveneens de reis zal meemaken, heet Toteur K.), en van de geëmigreerde Tsjechische schrijver Milan Kundera, aan wiens Het boek van de lach en de vergetelheid Geerts een paar motto's ontleent. Praag is ook ‘de ruime symboliek die het woord in zich draagt: niet alleen de herinneringen van degenen die er wonen of er ooit geweest zijn, maar ook de romantiek van de Praagse lente van 1968’. En dit is een citaat van Geerts zelf uit zijn bespreking van Praag schrijven van Daniël Robberechts uit 1975Ga naar voetnoot4. Ook zijn enorme belezenheid heeft de auteur, nu al bijna 20 jaar literatuurcriticus van De Nieuwe, en zijn kennis van wat gezegd en gefluisterd wordt achter de literaire en politieke coulissen van dit land, dat geen politiestaat genoemd kan worden als Tsjechoslowakije b.v., maar dat wel al aardig wat kenmerken vertoont van een politionele samenleving, in dit boek verwerkt op een fantasierijke, soms groteske maar in essentie niet vrijblijvende wijze. Pagadders is immers een geëngageerde roman, waarin de auteur zijn visie geeft op individu en collectiviteit. Alleen van een knettergekke schoolmeester als Ikke kan de idee afkomstig zijn om mensen van zo verschillende pluimage samen te brengen in een bus, ‘een collectief vervoermiddel dat technische volmaaktheid paart aan sociale samenhorigheid’ (p. 137) en ze te confronteren met het eigen staatssysteem en dat van een Oosteuropees land. Het personage Markus, ontwerper van een technisch perfecte dormobiel, legt de auteur de volgende woorden in de mond: ‘Het christendom is na tweeduizend jaar kapot gegaan. Het marxisme hield het nauwelijks honderdvijftig jaar vol. Maar mijn systeem is ijzersterk. Mijn systeem gaat niet kapot’ (p. 27). Anarchistische uitspraken treffen we op andere plaatsen in het boek aan: ‘chaos en vrede aan alle mensen van goede wil dank zij de dubbeldekker’ (p. 75) en in de discussie tussen Ikke en de Satraap van Pagad, beiden opgesloten in de lift van het schoolgebouw op de dag van de afsluiting van het schooljaar (p. 105-112). En het gevolg van de verzieking van het systeem en de uitholling van de ethiek - gezegden afkomstig van de filosofieprofessor Gin Zever - zal volgens de graatmagere, kromgegroeide priester Floris Christus de opkomst zijn van een nieuwe Führer, een superpolitiecommissaris (p. 64). De marxistische filosofieprofessor Gin Zever is ook de man die kritiek uit op de verdeling van de bovenverdieping van de dubbeldekker in aparte (slaap)hokjes: ‘Zeker weer een idee van Ikke: iedere enkeling in zijn eigen hoekje. Een bus is een collectiviteit, geen versnipperd individualisme’. Ikke dient hem als volgt van repliek: ‘De collectiviteit heerst, zoals in het menselijk lichaam, in de buik van de bus, maar in haar hoofd dient alles ordelijk en rationeel, om niet te zeggen politioneel gerangschikt te zijn’ (p. 148). Deze uitspraak nu is typerend voor Ikke in zijn poging om tegenstellingen in Hegeliaanse zin aufzuheben: individualisme en collectivisme, dood en leven, christendom en marxisme, Oost en West, fantasie en rationaliteit. zich onder invloed van de kerncentrale in Doel splitsen in hun persona en hun schaduw, komt in Pagadders op verschillende niveaus terug: in de relatie van Ikke tot zijn vrouw Serena (cfr. haar woedende opmerking: ‘Jij hebt nooit ergens een verklaring voor. Jij stuk onklaarheid!’, p. 137), in de relatie van Ikke tot het schrijven (cfr. zijn antwoord op Serena's vraag: ‘Schrijf je een boek? - ‘Nee’, zei Ikke nijdig, ‘ik schrijf geen boek, dat doet Toteur K. wel voor mij’, p. 136) en het dualisme blijkt ook in het algemeen in de beschouwingen over rationaliteit, vrijheid, klassenstrijd, sociaal onrecht, kunst, individu en collectiviteit, die culmineren in de lange verzuchting van de blinde Tsjechische professor geschiedenis Knobbel, dat individualiteit en collectiviteit zouden samenvallen, zoals ooit gebeurd is in de tijd van de ware hussieten (pp. 201-202). Voor de auteur zelf blijft de verzoening van de tegenstellingen een utopie, het resultaat blijft altijd een of...of: ‘Wat ook het einde was van deze reis, de rode RT 3333 demonstreerde dat het individu óf collectief óf onpersoonlijk is en dat er geen tussenweg bestaat, niet in Oost en niet in West,...’ (p. 240). En toch moet ik concluderen dat het verzinnen van dit verhaal, dat door zijn groot aantal personages, zijn vele gebeurtenissen, zijn literaire en anderssoortige verwijzingen en zijn taalspelen haast niet geresumeerd kan worden, een duidelijke poging is tot het construeren van een tussenweg, tot het beantwoorden van de in het eerste hoofdstuk gestelde vraag: ‘Kun je me uitleggen waarom dit geen nachtmerrie is, maar de werkelijkheid?’ (p. 14). Pagadders legt op speelse wijze de grimmige contradicties bloot van onze samenleving die echter niet meer als contradicties worden ervaren door een constant taalmisbruik en een subtiele, aangehouden taalmanipulatie. Ikke tracht het - vergeefs - in een van zijn lessen aan zijn studenten in de Mededeelzaamheid duidelijk te maken: wat ‘massacommunicatie’ genoemd wordt, is eigenlijk een verdovingsindustrie (p. 24) en niemand luistert meer, omdat iedereen zo bezig is met mededeelzaam zijn (p. 56). Het derde deel van het al geciteerde boek van Milan KunderaGa naar voetnoot5 begint met een gesprek tussen twee Amerikaanse meisjes over het toneelstuk De rinoceros van Ionesco tijdens een vakantiecursus voor buitenlandse studenten: ‘Ik weet niet zo goed hoe ik het moet begrijpen dat mensen in een neushoorn veranderen’, zei Gabriëlla. ‘Dat moet je zien als een symbool’, legde Michaella uit. ‘Dat is waar’ zei Gabriëlla. ‘Literatuur is uit tekens samengesteld’ (p. 75). Als het waar is dat symbolen geen pragmatisch doel of nut hebben en niet functioneren op het vlak van de zakelijkheid, maar op dat van de persoonlijke beschouwing, zoals beweerd wordtGa naar voetnoot6, dan lijkt me de dialoog tussen Gabriëlla en Michaella een uitstekend commentaar op Paggaders, waarin ook Ikke in het 14e hoofdstuk een monsterachtige metamorfose ondergaat in een ondoorgrondelijke knobbel vol afwerende borstels. Door de ingreep van het schrijven heeft Leo Geerts een doorsnee van de bevolking van een middelgrote stad zoals Antwerpen, herkenbaar aan hun taalgebruik (kinderlijk, plechtig, ambtelijk, dichterlijk, nuchter, onbeholpen, grotesk, dweperig, hakkelend, enz.) en herkenbaar aan hun ideeën en gedragingen, samenge- | |

bracht in een Narrenschiff, ‘een rijdend schip vol vernuft (op weg) naar het land van de opperste politionaliteit’ (p. 76). De ingreep van de auteur, waardoor personen en feiten herkenbaar blijven maar tevens functioneren buiten het anekdotische om, geeft aan het verhaal zijn symbolische betekenis. Pagadders is behalve het verhaal van Ikke, Serena, Eneke, Tweeke, Alena Moederziel, Toteur K. en hoe ze ook allemaal mogen heten, ook het verhaal van ‘Elckerlijc’ in de jaren '80. Joris Gerits |
