This re-publication of ‘De Stijl’, edited by Ad Petersen, consists of three parts:
Texts, illustrations and covers have been reproduced in their original dimensions.
The overall size of the original issues of volume I-III ranged approximately between 7¼″ × 9⅝″ (18.5 × 24.5 cm) and 7⅝ × 10¼ (19.5 × 26 cm). In order to accommodate these size differences, the margins have been enlarged.
The overall size of the original issues of volume IV-VII ranged approximately between 10″ × 7½″ (25.5 × 19 cm) and 10¼ × 8¼ (26 × 21 cm); the remaining four issues were approximately 10⅝ × 8⅝ (27 × 22 cm). In order to accommodate these size differences, the margins have been changed. They are mostly larger than in the originals. The last issues, however, have somewhat smaller margins.
Part 1 and part 2 are paginated throughout, but the original pagination per volume has been retained. Moreover, on the bottom of each page is recorded: the volume number, the issue number and the year in which the issue appeared.
The original volumes of part 1 were printed on rough text paper. The original paper of the covers was a colored cover paper with colors running from green and yellow-gray to gray. In this edition the colors have been limited to one green and two grays, printed on the same paper as the text. The appendices were originally printed on sheets of coated paper and loosely inserted. In this edition they have been bound in where they are most pertinent to the text. The original volumes of part 2 were printed on various kinds of paper. Up till volume VI.9 the quality of the rough text paper did not permit the printing of half tones, with the exception of the Lissitsky number (V.10/11). The half tones were printed separately on coated paper sheets, or tipped-in as small separate reproductions on coated paper. Beginning with volume VI.9 a paper suitable for half tones was used; the issues ‘10 jaren Stijl’, ‘Aubette’ and ‘dernier numéro’ were printed on coated paper. The covers were usually of a heavy text paper; only ‘10 jaren Stijl’ had a cover of heavy coated paper; ‘Aubette’ had a heavy cover of one-sided coated paper and ‘dernier numéro’ a bristol board cover.
The quality of the printing of text and plates in the originals was rather poor. This edition is, intentionally, not an improvement, but a reproduction, resembling the original as closely as possible, except for the paper.
This reprint in offset lithography on satin finish machine coated 120 grs/sq.m. paper was done by steendrukkerij de Jong & Co., Hilversum. The binding is by Sijthoff, Leiden. The cover, front matter and additional pagination was designed by Pieter van Delft.
