Hi Ilja,
Here's a rough sketch of the project, although we're naturally looking for your input before finalising anything: The One-song Song-cycle Project (the program has no title yet!).
A project investigating how non-Dutch speakers hear the Dutch language. The idea is that 12 different composers will each set the same text. They will be specially commissioned new works from non-Dutch speaking composers exploring the relationship between a word's sound and its meaning. The premiere will take place on 11 October 2009 at the Nederlandse Muziek Dagen 2009 in Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ, Amsterdam. The works will be scored for Ensemble Klang possibly plus a singer/narrator/declamator. It could be that we record the ‘text’ being recited (in 12 different ways - one for each composer) and the composer's work from sound recordings rather than the written word. We could also use more than one text, each getting a small part of a longer text?
I already have a number of the composers lined up, with a mixture of mother tongues - but would like to solidify the concept with you before finalising that list.
You can read/hear more from the group on our website: www.ensembleklang.com or myspace.com/ensembleklang
A number of other venues have also already expressed interest in the project. It could be that we perform it in 3-4 places around the Netherlands.
It would be great to talk/meet in the coming week to discuss the project as I'm hitting you here with more questions than answers!
All best,
Pete
