visit to grandmother

Tonight I brought Belgian cans of milk
to Grandma who lives in Holland.
We talked about all sorts of things -
she was no women's libber in her time,
though she might today
regret that.
She got married in a simple farmers' village
to Grandpa for blindest love,
but when her first child, six weeks old,
lay dying in her arms
he wanted to go to the movies.
Grandpa was a good man
but until very recently
women were better
than they are now.
