In the Athenaeum van London (3 Sept. 1904) komt het gewoon overzicht Continental literature voor. In Belgium van mij⁽¹⁾:

M^elle Virginie Loveling has been for many years at the head of Flemish literature in Belgium. Already famous for her charming verse, reminiscent of Uhland and Bürger⁽²⁾, the first essayed fiction in 1874, and during thirty years she has continued to produce notable novels, several of which are counted among the best Flemish prose writings. Her last novel, De Twistappel⁽³⁾ (The Apple of Discord) tells the story of the struggle so frequent in Flanders between a free-thinking father and a mother rigidly determined on the moral and religious education of their child. It is a deeply original work, which avoid[s] the perils of the novel with a purpose, and delights the reader by its freshness, fine observation and tender feeling. -

Ik vertrek morgen Zondag 4 Sept. te 8.20 uit Brussel (Midi) met Rooses⁽⁴⁾ en de zijnen naar Spanje en kan geen tijd meer vinden om U te gaan spreken. Gisteren avond kwam ik terug uit Deventer.

(3) De Twistappel is verschenen in 1904 bij De Nederlandsche Boekhandel te Antwerpen en bij Brusse te Rotterdam. De roman werd vóórgepubliceerd in Nederland in 1903.
