December 19, 1986:Robert Nelson, chairman of the United States Interior Department special study group that prepared a report on economic conditions in American Indian reservationsGa naar voetnoot2. told the New York Times, ‘It looks like things are getting worse.’ The study found that 41 percent of American Indians in reservations were living below the poverty level, compared to 12 percent of the total US population who were in a similar predicament. It also found that the total unemployment among males 20 to 64 years old in the reservations, including ‘discouraged workers’ who had stopped seeking work, was 58 percent, compared to an average of 12 percent among all Americans.Ga naar voetnoot3. |
