The proposition made to M.^r Webster⁴⁾ hath found unexpected good successe in respect of his part, but Calandrini⁵⁾ seemes yet not throughly at quiet. However the resolution is taken not to loose one houre more, and accordingly I am made beleive, that the parties are in prosecution of the worke, and in the meane time letters are dispatched both from them and me into France to perfect the satisfaction now offered, if at last it shall not appeare sufficient. It should seeme strange, if so great a caution as M.^r Webster offers to put into his hands should not be accepted. If not, this impediment in the busines proceeds from some more hidden principle then the imaginary feare wich Calandrini hath pretended. I stay here to see some present effects of the dilligence now promised; if they appeare, I will hope, all will succeed wel. This account I thought necessary to give you, and beleive, you wil likewise impart it where it may be requisite ..... Amsterdam, Febr. 21⁶⁾.

4) John Webster, die 30 of 40 jaren lang koopman te Amsterdam was geweest, werd in Aug. 1644 met eenige andere Engelsche kooplieden hier te lande door het Parlement voor vijand van Engeland verklaard, omdat hij de zaak van den Koning begunstigde. Zijn naam komt telkens te pas bij het beleenen der kroonjuweelen.
