‘Thoug I am the least of your servants, and boldly dare trouble you with these lines, yet I am not inferior to the best, in sacrificing you a sincere heart which is not able - thoug never so great a distance - to forget your excellent person and manifold rare qualities. I could have wished that fortun had been so favorable to mee - being [as] I was once in that contrey - to have placed me firmely under your wings, where my eares had been feasted with your inchanting harmonie and pleasing composition, but she bestowd a place upon me which requires a more fatall and bolder spirit then nature has endued mee witthall. But patience, Sir, since I came home and have heard your fine naturell and far reaching straines in musick, I am got into a veine of the organs, and I beleeve, meet²⁾ I have an organ, costume would draw mee to a sundry methode of playing. I have made a raisonable thing for the organ, and doe wish so much honor to it, as to be heard by you. I would have send it, but that it requires a gentle touch, and therfore [is] not fit for every hande. I must also challenge your promess of that song which I so dearly loved, a song of your owne making, and doe intreat you to be pleased to send it me by Mr. Swanns³⁾ lettres. - Sir, I am tedious and therfore breack of, onely beseeching you to cast somtimes away a thaught upon mee, and not to forget him that is so infinitly your’ .....
