Van Normandië reisde De Haan naar Bretagne, waar hij (wij weten het van een kaart van 26 augustus 1911 aan Verwey) bij de nonnen van het Heilige Hart gastvrijheid vond. Hij voelde er zich: ‘calm, sad, secure behind high convent walls’, een citaat van Dowson892.. Huysmans en Dowson: tenminste iets laat De Haan merken van een gevoel van verwantschap met beide decadente schrijvers, die katholiek waren geworden. Ook in de besliste volzinnen vinden we een toespeling op een bekering als keuzemogelijkheid: ‘Eenzaamheid of katholicisme, is de eenige keus van eenen kunstenaar van onze dagen’893.. Uit Bretagne schreef De Haan niet aan Eekhoud, althans er is niets bewaard. Wel schreef hij uit Parijs, een carte postale afgestempeld 31 augustus. |
